| sinus hell Posted: 12/15/2007 11:29:24 PM | The time I got the worst I ate beef kung pao everyday for weeks. Extra garlic, extra chili paste. I give my recipe in msg 4 here:
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts8786917.aspx
I'd also spice up salsa by adding chili paste (Sambal Oelek is 15-20 times hotter than jalapeno peppers btw. That's one of the ingredients I call for in the recipe) and simply burning my mouth until my nose runs.
Unfortunately there is nothing that is a total cure all. I used to use Tavist-D which is great at drying up but then a young doctor told me I could use it longer than the 7 days the box says it is safe for and I found out why the hard way. My sinuses dried up so bad they broke right open and I had never had a single bloody nose before that.
Sudafed helps but you have to stick to it religiously when you flare up. Or it's herbal equivalent -- ephedra. The best one I ever took was an ephedra, licorice, hot cayenne pepper mix in a capsule. Didnt make me tired while the Rx stuff did.
I could do this all day -- go through products I've used & techniques I've used. Probably be better for you to tell me what you have tried and I can maybe advise you on something I have tried that you haven't.
Chances are you need a nasal steroid inhaler. They take weeks to kick in but they help. The other approach is to get stuff out of your environment. I have two Ionic Breeze air purifiers and they help immensely. The black mold they pull out of the air is unbelievable to find out it is even floating all around you, no matter how much you clean. So did moving to a place with hardwood oak floors.
The other thing is to check the sites that show when molds and pollen levels are high. That way you can try figure out what you are reacting to, hopefully. The only other way is having 35 or so pinpricks on your back. Always fun. When you find out what the source is you do your best to eliminate it. For some its pets, grass, dander, dust mites, molds, etc..etc Does this typically happen for you this time of year? Some people are sensitive to specific tree pollens or plants throughout the year. They can be at very different times of the year.

(Classic Seinfeld, LOL.) Yeah, I can also attest that spicy foods do help clear up sinuses some.

| sinus hell Posted: 12/18/2007 12:38:56 PM | Is it sinus or is it migraine? If you google it, you will see plenty of articles on the mis-diagnosis of migraine as a sinus problem. I thought I had sinus problems at first but it turned out to be migraine. In my case, a daily Feverfew tablet has been really helpful - not one episode in nearly a year. I believe that Feverfew is also recommended for sinus pain. | |

| sinus hell Posted: 12/24/2007 1:06:47 PM | I suffer from sinus pain and pressure all the time. Mainly it is due to allergies so if you suffer from allergies then you might need to reduce the amount of exposure to your daily living. This is one way I avoid sinus infections.
To manage my sinus problem which is caused by a devious septum where the allergens lay and also I do get sinus pressure. I use Nasonex which disinfects the sinus passages. May sting but after a day or 2 the sinuses clear. Also I use AYR Saline Nasal drops which sooths the inflamed nasal passages and removes flem from the nose. This seems to work ok but not all the time. At times I use the combo.
I never used a netti pot every morning, is that the same as steam heat. Tried it which makes it worse for me.

| sinus hell Posted: 12/24/2007 1:18:32 PM | You've cut out dairy, now cut out wheat.
I used to go through 3 kleenex boxes a week, and get a serious head cold at least every two months. I was on the allergy meds all the while.
Cut out wheat, all the congestion and the allergies went away.
It may sound daunting at first, but it's really easy once you get the hang of it.

| sinus hell Posted: 12/24/2007 9:40:03 PM | | hi.. sorry to hear that youre suffering with this... giving up dairy is great, sometimes we have to really tweak our diet to see if issues are related to what we eat or drink.. eating fresh fruits and veggies , dark green salads, preferablly organic, can be a wonderful start to feeling better and losing weight.. if your diet is 60 % raw, you free up so much energy that used to go to digestion that the spare energy goes directly to healing and cleansing.. staying away from medication, smoking , drugs, alcohol also strengthens the body so that it can be powerful enough to rid toxins that go into our bodies that we can not control.. email me for more feedback any time.. wishing you health for the New Yr, warmly Mona | |

| sinus hell Posted: 12/28/2007 11:09:09 AM | | You should consult an expert on this. Sinus pain can be something quite serious. A guy I know has had seven surgeries to remove cysts in his sinuses. He had been to several ear/nose/throat specialists who had simply put that scope up his nose and not diagnosed anything wrong, but he finally got a referal to a surgeon who sent him for scans etc. and the real problem was discovered. I ended up getting a referal to the same doctor because I was also experiencing sinus pain. Other doctors had told me I just had a deviated septum, which is not uncommon, but the surgeon sent me for scans and discovered it wasn't deviated, it was broken, one of the worst he had seen. I had surgery three years ago, and haven't had an infection since, and I rarely get sick these days. I believe an fall I took when I was quite young, 3 yrs old, was responsible for the injury, so talk to your doctor and see if you can get a referal to a specialist. | |

| sinus hell Posted: 12/28/2007 1:52:46 PM | I know a way to clear sinuses but its nasty and should only be taken if your super congested.
1 cup tomato juice 1 tsb crushed fresh garlic 1/2 tbs hot sauce 1 tsp lemon juice celery salt to taste if desired.... heat and drink hot.
you will be decongested and maybe lose the headache too.
least till you make it to the doctors appointment. also helps to avoid milk and milk products as they produce more mucos and make you more congested.

| sinus hell Posted: 12/28/2007 10:22:15 PM | | Yup, that's the same holy trinity that Kung Pao has in it. Heat, Vinegar/Acid, and Fresh Garlic. | |

| sinus hell Posted: 12/29/2007 3:59:15 AM | some vodka in that drink would be good.......... | |

| sinus hell Posted: 12/29/2007 2:43:59 PM | | Sudafed works for me most of the time. I've also started getting allergy shots and they seen to have helped a little. | |

| sinus hell Posted: 1/3/2008 10:09:37 AM | Maybe your sinus cavities dried out or the blood pressure locally got too high from too much localized stress or perhaps it is even the sign of an infection coming on. On Xmas Eve morning shower a bit of blood came out of my nose and I've slowly and surely been battling another sinus infection. The last 3 or 4 days now my one eye has been red/severely bloodshot and exhibiting pain to light changes even like opening the refridgerator door at night.
Oh so much fun. So I've been trying to avoid seeing the doc using lots of sudafed, garlic dip, chicken noodle soup, echinacea/goldenseal tablets, nyquil at night, juicing fresh oranges in the AM, mucinex, ibuprofen, homeopathic cold/flu medicine. I'm doing a lot better holding my own as the sinus discomfort isn't severe but it's no walk in the park, either. Probably another day or three of this crap and I'll be ready to get some antibiotics if I don't start showing some improvement soon.
Bactrim works wonders -- Don't settle for amoxicillin with sinus infections, only dr's inexperienced with sinus infections give that stuff out and it usually does NOT get into sinus cavity often necessitating a second course of ABs. Bactrim is dual antibiotic, sulfa based, and surprisingly mild compared to the heartburn I get when I am prescribed amoxicillin. As its been around there are inexpensive generics available as well. If you get a sinus infection ask for it from your dr by name.
Anni: best thing is to try to keep your sinuses their normal salinity. Often people use simple saline water which you can make your own or buy in squeeze or aerosol bottles otc at any corner drug store. For homemade usually it's something like 1 tsp salt per pint of warm water or 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp baking soda in a pint of water.
Yes, baking soda (you hear ER drs call it bicarb on shows like ER) is actually very common and mild but strong. Its strength is that it can while supporting the natural salinity in a body additonally neutralize any acids. With cases like blood acidosis just baking soda(they also call it sodium bicarbonate) injected into veins can literally save a persons life.
Try some benadryl to keep the redness and inflammation down. Sudafed to keep you from getting blocked, as needed.
