Do you hate them? Love them?

Would you give your money to a beggar? Chuck a couple of pounds?

Last night i was in Preston and i saw one beggar.. I chucked a pound and told him to go get himself a job. He took my money and told me to p-off. I took that as a way of him to say 'thank you'

Where i come from we have so many beggars on the street, a bit like rats.

I would give money to them hey the government should sort out the homeless ppl and not sit on there fat a**es and give them house's and stop giving the house's to immigrates they should start looking after own country and not other countries. The homeless are mostly out on the street is they come to london to look for a job and find there are none. they are left homeless or they have a fight with there family and they run away.

Personally, i wouldn't want to hand money over to a homeless person in the street, for several reasons, one being i dont think the money would really go to help the homeless individual, secondly i wouldnt feel safe in a dark street with my purse out. In Nottingham, begging isn't really that common, because theres a capagin against people doing it, but theres a lot of big issuing about - which i dont mind, and i regularly buy, because they truely are who they say they are when doing big issuing and its mediated so the money actually goes to help. I will never forget on a trip to Albania, there was people of all ages begging on the street, seemingly desperiate, however when a boy went up to a guy on my tour group and said he was hungry - the guy offered him a apple, the boy said "no way" .. I also really hate it when they sit near cash machines, because come on - how can you say "Got no money on me mate" when youve just drawn some out, once somebody did that to my sister and she said to the woman she doesnt have any change, the woman said just give me a tenner then.

I like em, very long tradition of begging in this country

If they are homeless and struggling I often give them a couple of quid or buy them a coffee or a sandwich.

Mostly because people chuck pounds at them .. Its the same story with rats, we have lots of rats because people leave food on their compost heaps. We have lots of beggars because people give them money. A really posh girlfriend of mine, many years ago, used to dress in her scruffs and go begging on the Tube stations in London. She used to rake in between 50 and 150 per day. Why work when iditots give you tax free money for nothing.

I prefer rats to beggars..they are at least more honest about it!

We have beggars in the next town to me who work the spots near the cash machines in shifts.

Man that's bad .Just give the wo/man money or don't give them money .Where is the need to start taking the piss out of them .Did you feel better after belitteling the person ??
In Cambridge there is a big begging problem with groups of thirty or so hanging out together .Sometimes you come out of a bank and are immediately set upon . I dislike the aggressive beggar with a passion and once when asked if I had some spare change by this guy who was about two inches from my face , I replied "yes mate I have loads"and then proceeded to walk into the pub .Cambridge has charity boxes all over the city for people to put money into if they wish . Very occasionally I might buy that crap magazine Big Issue .

But take the piss out of someone who is begging -Never .
And anyone that does ought to feel ashamed of themselves.
Do you really know this person ,do you know their circumstance ,the abuse they may have received as children .
And as far as calling them rats ,why don't you make them wear special armbands and keep them in ghettoes .Have A word with yourselves .

Have to agree with this post, not a nice thing to do..not nice at all..infact rather nasty, still each to their own..

Never give to beggars, charity begins at home..

The problem is a bit like oversea aid or any charity: the more we give, the less governments needs to give.
What is supposed to be a social problem which should be best addressed by policies, is only left on one side to rot because of the generosity of people who suffice state shortage with their own giving.
As long as the mug down the high street gives, the government can look the other way.

I think that to give is morally right but socially wrong...and ayway...that chucked couple of pounds are most likely to be spent at the off-licence or down the local drug-dealer and whatever charity/oversea aid given is most likely going to end up in salaries or corrupted officials.

I give...sometimes...

Amen to that.

If I do give money - I give it without conditions or wondering what this will be spent on.

It is humilating enough for those people to be in their position, we do not know what pu them there/what they circumstances are and without knowing that we have no right to judge or humilate them more by throwing money at them with insulting/insensitive comments.

I also sometimes buy food/drink (and dog food with the easy open lead too) in adition to some cash - what they spend the cash on is up to them, whatever brightens up their day.

My attitude towards beggars has changed greatly over the last 3 years, as I spent 3 months homeless myself, followed by 2 years in accomodation surrounded by addicts and ex addicts alike. Only one ever truly impressed me with his determination to better himself.

I'm sure there are genuine cases but, by and large, I saw people who were provided with money and shelter by the state to exist, without begging, who chose to use that money for drugs and alcohol and rough it instead. The begging was simply a means to supplement the financing of their addiction.

I saw Benefits Offices full of peoople who knew every trick in the book to extract "free" money from the state for all sorts of plausible excuses and the money never went where they claimed it was gonna be used.

The real beggars, the ones who do need the money to survive, are swamped out by those who see this as just another way to get "free" money for their habit. If you took a real beggar a sandwich, he/she'd be grateful. But an addict would probably tell you to fook off!

I was in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago when I saw this Asian fella offer a beggar an unopened sandwich. The beggar shook his head, disgusted by this affront to his money gathering exploits. Surely a genuine beggar would take the sandwich and say thank you. Just before this I'd seen a bloke who looked suspiciously like a bit of a hardman/drug dealer ( if a person can look like a drug dealer? *shrug* ) having a word with the beggar.. it all looked very business-like but it wasn't too difficult to figure out what might be going on there.

Usually I will give money to people I think really need it, but another favourite scam in Edinburgh, is for ( apparently respectable, on the face of it ) people to ask you for money for their fare home on the bus.. I got duped once by this, and so now if I get asked this question, I offer to go to the bus station and buy their ticket for them.

I gave some money once to a down and out who had a big sign saying Falklands war
veteran next to him but only realized he was Argentinian when he said muchas gracias.
Since then I only give money to gulf war veterans now but check there not Iraqi ones first.

Some beggars find themselves in that situation for genuine reasons , others simply because they're bone idle swines who can't be arsed and expect the government and us folk to feed them. If I'm approached by a beggar I usually refuse although there are occasions when I'll offer to buy them a hot drink and a bacon butty.

I do give small amounts to beggars although there arent many where I live. You never know the story behind their poverty. I'd hate to be homeless, no money and no one to care about me.

First off.. I would never belittle, or insult a begger! Many people have a breaking pressure, as for the reason they find themselves living this way.. you can see the many young and old.. with a story untold begging on the streets of many city's .

A friend of mine had a breakdown.. Society as we know possed as a threat.. they decided to cut all ties and live in this twilight world.. why.. because they feel safe!
This person, had wealth, beyond most our dreams.. but now looks at it all as cursed!
So next time you cross a tramp/begger.. look deep into their eyes.. and feel the fear how some of todays circumstances can change a life forever.. Oh and just a few coppers for a hot coffee on a cold night!

A friend of mine once got angry because of the amount of beggars that insisted in having dogs .
What do people think of beggars with dogs .Not sure what to think myself .
Are they a genuine animal lover who although on the streets look after their pet perfectly well .Or are they using the animal to coerce people into giving them money .

Would be more likely to give someone money if they had a dog ???

Many beggars have dogs, its their sanity and company, afterall its not like they have much else in life..
And no it would not make me give money, but a tin of dog food yes, although I do see Princess hiding round the corner waiting to batter the poor mutt once I have gone, spoilt and pedantic my biatch..

depends if they are 'proffesional' beggars or genuine homeless people.

Im not interested in proffesional beggars, but the genuine homeless people dont tend to beg.. they just happen to sit on a bench or on a door step minding their own business as they have no where else to go. As for the dog.. it could be a stray they have tagging along. After all, they have nothing else between them do they ? So why not have at least one faithful friend...

Do you hate them? Love them?

Hate them, especially the ones with the clipboards and direct debit forms

In Nottingham, begging isn't really that common, because theres a campaign against people doing it

In Nottingham town centre it's not that common now, but it's still there when you venture away from the main shopping runs. It was absolutely terrible 2 years or so back and got to the point where the Police just start picking them up off the streets and dumping them somewhere else, so now they sit in the shadows waiting for people off the beaten track.

I should be sensitive towards their "plight", I know, and don't get me wrong; I feel for the genuine cases - but how do you know who the genuine cases are? and who is just another idiot hell bent on destroying himself by shoving whatever substances they can get hold of inside themselves...

Indeed. Beggars are slightly lower class than the likes of Keith off Eastenders who is sitting around doing nothing all day and expecting something for it in return

Telling him to get a job is not belittling him. Its telling him to get a job.. Simple as that.
He looked healthy enough to get a job.. although he could do with a wash, shave and a hair cut.

And as far as calling them rats ,why don't you make them wear special armbands and keep them in ghettoes

My God. This is a fantastic idea. If you are going into politics i will definitely vote for you.. why has no body else come up with this idea?
