As with any Government Agency, we must be ever vigilant they keep the interests of the American Citizen in focus.

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement -- an arm of the Department of Homeland Security -- credits its Fugitive Operations Program with a reduction in backlog of alien absconders. The program, which has 75 teams working across the country, also works to ensure that immigration judges' deportation orders are enforced.

"For the first time we're beginning to see a reduction in the fugitive alien backlog," Julie Myers, head of ICE, said at a Wednesday press conference in Los Angeles. "We're down now to approximately 595,000 illegal alien fugitives, down about 36,000 from the beginning of this fiscal year.

"We obviously have much more work to do, but I think that's great progress," she said.

The number of undocumented workers arrested at raids on businesses skyrocketed from 445 to 3,651 over the same time frame.

When a comprehensive immigration bill went down in flames this summer in Congress, Chertoff said he was left with one mandate: Enforce the law. In his Thursday interview with ABC News, he was blunt, offering no apologies.

"For many years the way we dealt with illegal immigration was, we paid political lip service to toughness," he said.

Chertoff contends the government has faced a lot of resistance in the enforcement of the laws, but said, "If you believe that we need to find a way to address the need for workers and we also have to have a humane way to resolve the 11 million who are here and their status, then we do need to go to Congress. We need to get a comprehensive set of legal reforms that will address all these issues, and we've supported that."

"If you choose not to do that, and you say, no, we want enforcement, then we will enforce, and we're not just gonna pay lip service to enforcement. We're gonna enforce using all the tools that are available."

So more raids -- a lot more -- might be on the horizon.

I say good for the Government and amen on the raids, how dare these illegals demand right's when the very second they cross the border they are breaking the laws of a Sovereign Nation... It is about time.... As for the post above me your right on, actually the right too bear arms in our Constitution gives us that right.....

You know, when we are talking about illegal immigrants and enforcing the law and all of that kind of stuff, it leaves me wondering one question, really.

If every illegal immigrant were rounded up and sent back, and all the laws were enforced, how many families would that tear apart and how many children would essentially be orphaned and have to live on the taxpayers dime until they were 18?

The answer to that is none. Good parents don't orphan their kids, they take them where they go. Wouldn't you?
When the kids are of legal age, the kids have every right to come back as American Citizens. If the parents haven't broken any American Laws or Mexican Laws, the child can sponsor the parents.

If they move back to their country of origin willingly, then theoretically you are right, although that could create a nightmare of getting the children a US passport.

However, I would propose to you that those illegals who are taken in raids and put into jail until their deportation do not have that option. Last time I checked, we do not allow parents to take children with them to jail or prison. I could be wrong on this one, but I'm pretty sure I'm not. So the question then becomes what of those who are not voluntarily returning and are being forced to do so through the Department of Homeland Security or whatever department deals with immigration now. Those are the children that are going to be orphaned and those are the families that are going to be ripped apart. Like it or not, the laws aren't going to care.

Well did the mother and father think of they're children before they made the decision too come here illegally ? Thats not our concern the welfare of the illegal family... Send them back too relatives they have in mexico, there the family will be reunited and be able too live in relative comfort knowing they aren't breaking the laws of any sovereign nation...

There are family detention centers where they wait deportation. I saw a picture of one such in Texas. It looks very comfortable and young child friendly.
I have advocated the Illegals self-deport so, they can apply to come back. Don't know how many may have.
I do know, when Oklahoma passed their law they fled by the thousands. Where to, who knows. A few have gone on up to Canada and claimed they are being persecuted by the US and Mexico.
Arizona is updating their position now and I, my friends and families have been emailing Texas State Senators to pass a similar law.
Where the Government is failing us, is not investigating and raiding known Illegal Employers.

Last time I checked we don't put American citizens in detention centers to await deportation, and children born on American soil to illegal immigrants are considered American citizens. Unless we are going to start infringing on the rights of American citizens and deporting them to Mexico, we are still going to have thousands of children who are going to be in America after being ripped apart from their by immigration laws who are going to have to be supported by the tax payers dime.

Has anyone heard of the green Card Lottery?! The United States Government (from what i have read) Has a lottery every year...The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program... that imports 55,000 immigrants into the United States every year simply by entering this lottery and having a computer pick their lottery number. If that person who put in the entry wins, the Government allows them, their spouse and any children under 21 to come and live and work in the USA. Airfare provided as well.......They don't have to try and enter illegally anymore, just pick a number! So...at the rate of 55,000 a year pretty soon us USA legal citizens will have to move to some foreign country to live where no one else lives because they all will be here!! What are they thinking??

Under-aged kids go with their parents. Only a bad parent would abandon their child.
The children aren't being deported, the parents are.

Illegals have a choice. They can make plans to self deport and take their families with them or make arrangements for someone else to become guardians of their children or they can play the odds game and suffer the consequences. It's all their choice.

I've always told my children, You know what the laws are, You know what is right and what is wrong and if YOU make the choice to break the law or do something you know is wrong, YOU GIVE UP THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE CONCQUENCES.

Why should we the American Tax Paying Citizens, have to take on the responsibility of worrying about the consequences of other peoples choices, especially when they broke the laws to put themselves in the position they are finding themselves in now?

The same roads that brought them north, can take them back south again. Actually, if they turn themselves in, they get a FREE TICKET BACK HOME, compliments of the American Tax Paying Public.

Think about this - if every person guilty of violent crime were rounded up and sent to jail, how many families would that tear apart and how many children would essentially be orphaned and have to live on the taxpayers dime until they were 18?

Is the answer to legalize violent crime, since it can never be entirely prevented?

Or minimize and not enforce the laws, the laws WE ARE ALL EXPECTED TO LIVE BY, because it inconveniences someone, who is a law breaker to begin with and is here illegally?

The illegals are complaining in our town because they claim they are being singled out to receive tickets and jail time for multiple offences of driving with out a licence or not having their auto's insured. Give me a break. Since I was 16 years old, I have never been without auto insurance or a drivers licence, BECAUSE THAT IS THE LAW.

If you don't have either, ride a bike or ride with someone else.

Hate too inform you of this, but your talking about the anchor baby law, and that law was designed for the babies of African slaves after the emancipation proclamation, babies of illegals do not fall under that category and are not citizens , if the laws were enforced as they are written these children would only be entitled too 3 squares a day and cot till they had a way home, so we wouldn't be tearing American families apart we be sending them home together....

Republiman, have you read the Constitution of the United States lately? Article 14, Section 1 trumps the Anchor Baby Law.

Article 14, Section 1.
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

You are more than welcome to try and argue that a law trumps the constitution, but unfortunately it doesn't.

Namegame2, I don't think we can equate these situations. Theoretically, if a parent is convicted of a violent crime, there is going to be another parent who have not been convicted of a violent crime, or a crime at all, or a relative who can take care of said child. If both parents of a child who are illegal immigrants are deported, while the child is an American citizen, and there are no other American citizen relatives, that child becomes an orphan, torn apart from his family. To me, equating someone convicted with a violent crime to a deportation case is like comparing someone who comes into a war with a nuclear weapons against someone who has a beebee gun. They are not even comparable out side of the fact that they are technically both crimes.

The sad thing is that the argument again comes down to humane treatment and morality vs legality.

Consider this, are morality and legality the same thing?

Ezzee, I know the amendmant you talk about, but you need too look up the history of why that amendment was added too the constitution, it never applied nor does it apply to those that enter the country illegally, period... They are debating this in congress as we speak.....

PHOENIX - Mexican illegal immigrant Lindi sat down with her husband Marco Antonio in the weeks before Christmas to decide when to go back to Mexico.

She has spent three years working as a hairdresser in and around Phoenix, but now she figures it is time to go back to her hometown of Aguascalientes in central Mexico.

"The situation has got so tough that there don't seem to be many options left for us," Lindi, who asked for her last name not to be used, told Reuters.

The couple are among a growing number of illegal immigrants across the United States who are starting to pack their bags and move on as a crackdown on undocumented immigrants widens and the U.S. economy slows, turning a traditional Christmas trek home into a one-way trip.

In the past year, U.S. immigration police have stepped up workplace sweeps across the country and teamed up with a growing number of local forces to train officers to enforce immigration laws.

Meanwhile, a bill seeking to offer many of the 12 million illegal immigrants a path to legal status was tossed by the U.S. Congress, spurring many state and local authorities to pass their own measures targeting illegal immigrants.

The toughening environment has been coupled with a turndown in the U.S. economy, which has tipped the balance toward self deportation for many illegal immigrants left struggling to find work.

"It is still just a thought, although we are preparing to leave," said Ernesto Garcia, a carpenter from Caborca in northwest Mexico, who stood in line at the Mexican consulate in Phoenix this week for paperwork that will allow him and his family to resume their lives south of the border.

Packing their bags
There is no tally of the number of illegal immigrants who have already left the United States, many of whom simply head south over the border with their belongings packed into a car during the annual Christmas exodus, or board scheduled flights for other destinations.

Mexican consular sources in Phoenix say they are seeing a spike in the number of immigrants applying for Mexican citizenship for their U.S.-born children, which will allow them to enroll in schools in Mexico.

They are also seeing a rise in requests for papers enabling families to carry household belongings back to Mexico, free of import duties.

Members of the Brazilian community in the U.S. northeast, meanwhile, say they are starting to see an increase in the number of illegal immigrants heading back to their homes in Brazil in recent months.

"They are beginning to put in the balance the constant fear of being detained and deported, and many are deciding to leave," said Fausto Mendes da Rocha, executive director of the Brazilian Immigrant Center in Boston.

Other returning immigrants cite a slowdown in the U.S. economy as a factor, and the falling value of the U.S. dollar against other currencies, which has eaten into the value of remittances sent to support families at home.

Aluisio Carvalho, 66, left a wife and four children behind in Brazil in 2001 when he set off to find work in Boston. Since then, he has managed to pay for the education of his children by working in a restaurant, but is now planning to leave himself in February

"Salaries are really low, and living costs are high. We also face too much exploitation at work here, too many demands," he said.

Moving within the U.S.
While some illegal immigrants are simply self deporting, others are moving within the United States to avoid federal immigration raids and pro-enforcement measures passed by a patchwork of state and local authorities.

Among them are undocumented immigrants in Marshalltown, Iowa, where Mexicans and Central Americans workers at a Swift & Co meatpacking plant were arrested during coordinated immigration raids across six states a year ago that netted hundreds of employees.

Moses Garcia, a U.S. citizen who came from Mexico 18 years ago and knew many of the families affected by the 2006 raid through his church and real estate work, said most of the workers have left to other states, not back to Mexico.

"They feel like they are not welcome here," Garcia said. "They go to Minnesota, Atlanta, Nebraska, California."

In Arizona, where some specially trained sheriff's deputies already enforce immigration laws and a new state law sanctioning businesses hiring undocumented workers is due to come in to effect January 1, many illegal immigrants are eyeing a move to states they see as less hostile.

Among them is day laborer Fernando Gutierrez who trekked illegally into the desert state 18 months ago from Mexico, and is now thinking of joining a cousin working in Oregon in the Pacific northwest.

"Everyone lives in fear of the police stopping you for some minor infraction and then asking for your papers," Gutierrez said as he touted for work in the chill morning air at a Phoenix day labor site.

"I want to get as far away from here as possible."
