The worst christmasPage 1 of 2    (1, 2)
I was just thinking back to a time when my parents split up and I had to make a choice about who to spend it with. In the end I went to my dads because he had no-one whereas my mum had some of her family to spend it with. It was pretty lonely just the two of us and although dad made an effort it wasnt the same as the whole family being together.

What was the worst christmas you had and where were you?

Not so much Christmas, but a couple of years back, early January, I went to London to see Cardiff play Arsenal in the FA Cup. Not only did we lose, on the way back I was told my Grandad had passed away.

Obviously the second news was a little worse than the first

I was about 12. Christmas Day must have been on a Sunday, so it was pretty much like any other Sunday of my childhood - Dad was the church organist and the visiting preacher was coming to tea. I was curled up in bed all day with the most agonising abdominal cramps.

Or there was the first Christmas after me and my ex had split up - my dad died a couple of weeks before Christmas, the kids, if i remember rightly were with their dad Christmas Eve night (same as this year) and my mother had invited some poor old soul to lunch. So I woke up alone on Christmas morning, and there was this odd old woman at my mothers who kept wanting to counsel me.

I was going to say the first christmas after mum died was my worst but thinking about it, there was a house full of family members there, i had my brothers to talk to and we did have a laugh so it wasnt "the worst".
At the moment im dreading this christmas for various reasons, my dad died this year, im going to be having dinner with his wife, there will only be her, me and my son and i have a feeling she's gonna be in floods of tears all day which i cannot handle at all. This time last year i was so very happy and in love, this year theres no love just emptiness, so although Christmas hasnt yet happened, im drawing on the negatives and saying this year will be the worst and hoping im proved wrong

Oh God, i've had 2 bad xmas's.

The first and probably the worst one really has got to be the year my son went to Belgium to be with his Dad. It was the first year I had spent without him for Christmas. I think he was around 5 years of age and it was the longest I had been without him. At the time I was working in a pub and I agreed to work on Xmas eve and day so I would keep busy. This might have worked, but I ended up getting the worst sore throat ever and my throat closed up. I was unable to speak, so I had a card written on my front asking for the order , with thank you and merry xmas written on my back.

I guess in retrospect it worked out well as if he had been with me it might not have been much fun for him, with me not being able to talk.

The second one was last year. My son went to my Mum's to stay xmas eve, while I was meant to be meeting friends for a drink and stopping over after so we would all be up together xmas morning. Unfortunately I had back problems at the beginning of December and the pain was still so bad I had to cancel going out. My son still went to my Mum's as I didn't want him to suffer for it. I went over for xmas dinner, but when I got there I couldn't sit as it was too painful and standing still was equally painful. I ended up walking home and leaving my son behind so he could enjoy being with the rest of the family. Coming home on my own wasn't exactly ideal and although my back improved after 3 or 4 months, it's still a bit jittery and the last few weeks i've been living in fear that something silly puts it out again. Touch wood so far it's holding up and i'll be able to make up for last year.

My son will be 15 next year, so i'm not sure if xmas will be the same after this year, but I guess you have to use the time to recharge your batteries, reflect and look forward to the future.

The worst Festive day i have had (hopefully that will p*ss someone off lol) was a few years ago..was working in the middle east, luckily the day fell on a Friday (their holy day) and I was the only one left in country. I gave the chef and house boys all a couple of days off (see i am kind) and just spent it in front of PC. Didnt see or hear another human for 48hrs...apart from on the tv...

Another xmas i went up to my mates for xmas day in sunny Edinburgh. Short version..both went to the pub ..had a few too many...came back put the dinner on and then woke up 6 hrs later with smoke coming from the oven....my dinner that year consisted of bags of crisps.

It's pretty similar to that for me this year. If I would have chose to go with my mum then my dad would have just stayed at home and got drunk. So i'm dragging him down to my uncles just to make sure he doesn't just waste the day away. Although in truth i'd rather be with my mum.

Last christmas my daughter and I came down with a stomach bug on christmas night and spent Boxing day convinced we were both dying, never felt so ill.
Looking back I only ever seem to get ill at christmas.

Christmas 2002, we were all at my mums as she had been brought home to die, she passed away Boxing day morning, Christmas was a bit of a blur that year to be honest..

I dont think any Christmas could be worse than that one..

Was stuck in saudi arabia, not bad, but got so drunk on siddiki that forgot everyone in UK was not working as was on my one day off, going to work the next day with a really bad hangover, but not getting any sympathy from the other tee-total brits :)

Had a phone chat with family and they guessed was wasted :)

Stop focussing on the negatives - you think negative and that's all you'll see.

There is something positive (however difficult it is to find) in ever situation. It's how you look at it.

That is all well and good for some. Some people find it hard to see the wood for the trees at the best of times, let alone christmas.
There might be positives, but sometimes although you know they are there you cant get that into your heart, your head tells you "look you do have lots to be grateful for, come on snap out of it", but your heart is unbelievably heavy.
I love that other people can see the joy of christmas, i enjoy the fact that many people love this time of year and i dont try and bring others down but i dont find joy at this time of year.
Two years ago my mother was desperately trying to make sure we all had a brilliant christmas as i am sure she knew it would be her last. She did her best, but seeing her trying to get from room to room with a zimmer frame, helping her up to the loo so that she could vomit up her starter then main course, all of that sort of gave me a very sad christmas. One year ago my Dad drove down on Christmas morning then drove back to Somerset in the evening to be with his mum and family as my grandad had died 5 days earlier, after we all went to the Crematorium in the morning, the day was horrible and sad, giving your mum flowers but laying them on the ground sort of tinges christmas with sadness. Writing her a card but leaving it with hundreds of others in the crematorium garden of rememberance takes away any joy i have now.

I do sincerely hope you all have a lovely christmas and i hope in time i will heal and be able to view this time of year with the same happiness and excitedness that i used to.

The Christmases since Paul died have been easier than the last two when he was alive... The last one we spent with him unconscious and on life support.. That one sucked .. And the one before that we spent holding bowls for him to throw his stomach up into, it was so scary seeing all that blood.. Last year we were at a loss with no hospital visits but this Christmas my dad is in hospital so it's back to the old grindstone ... They weren't awful but they could have been better I guess..

The worst one for me! I was arrested and the prison service where on strike, so I was held in police cells with others instead of being on remand in a remand centre.
Because I was English, I was not allowed bail. I spent Christmas day handcuffed to seven other people sitting in a corridor secured to a cell door (all of us). This was in the UK. since then I have had no respect for the police ! for the law yes. Remember that when you are on remand you are still innocent. The rest is for another time. Guess what I am spending Christmas with real friends this year. I have also had many good Christmases since then both here and abroad.

So much for being English Hey ? ( I remember you Rubber neck)Pity you never had a Daddy.
