I watched a documentary on this late, bizarre New Wave individual last night. I had never seen or heard of him before. He resembled a cross between The Space Phantom and Pee Wee Herman with an operatic voice and a flair (to say the least) for the theatric, his life tragically cut short by AIDS.

Nonetheless it was pretty fascinating, hypnotic even. I could see Tim Burton or Ed Wood or John Waters making biopic about him.

Any fans out there?

He was a big influence on a number of artists including David Bowie and Morrissey among others. Interesting documentary, The Nomi Song, from 2004.

My first exposure to Klaus Nomi was in the film "Urgh...A Music War". One of my former roommates is a HUGE David Bowie fan and he ordered this bootlegged VHS tape of a bunch of Bowie TV appearances. One was the Saturday Night Live that featured Klaus on backing vocals. I was like "That's Klaus Nomi!" I think that's the true testament to what a unique artist Klaus was. I was browsing in Tower Records a couple of years back and saw that DVD on display and immediately bought it. It's an amazing documentary celebrating the life of Nomi. It's also incredibly heartbreaking when you look at the tragic turn that Klaus's life took.

A very talented artist, never was a big fan of his, I guess he was alright. He used to shop regularly at a record store I worked in, we spoke a few times. thought he was a nice guy.

Yep. I've got one LP. I can't remember now if I saw him first on Urrgh! or some TV appearance.

Rush Limbaugh used to use his music to introduce his "Gay News" section.
That Rush...what a class act!

The Nomi Song is a good doc, so is New York Doll about Arthur "Killer" Kane as is the song Robyn Hitcock and the Venus 3 wrote about him and they have a pretty good doc out about them too (Peter Buck is also in the band btw)
