Anyone have any "Air card" or similar type reception recommendations? I live on a boat and avail. networks are mostly weak signals.

A Hughes 2 way sat. system would probably be the best but boats move and you can't easily reposition the dish.

In my opinion the Verizon cards get the best coverage.

There are two networks that the card can connect to EVDO and 1xRTT. The EVDO is the high speed network and the 1xRTT network is their slower network which it will roll over to if the signal for EVDO isn't good. (EVDO is Evolution Data Optimized)

For Cingular there are many different networks. In speed order from fastest to slowest:
HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
UMTS (I think it means Universal Mobile Telephone System, but not sure)
EDGE (Don't know if it means anything)
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service I think)

The first two are comparable to home high speed networks. EDGE is about 5 or 6 times as fast as a good modem connection and GPRS is at most maybe 2x as fast as a good modem connection. Cingular's high speed coverage isn't as consistent as Verizon's but I've never tried it near the water.

T-Mobile only has GPRS and EDGE.

out in the ocean, the only available network would be sat.. cellphone reception is nonexistent. there's really not a whole lot you can do. but if you're thinking of evdo and whatnot, sprint's cheaper. get a phone, get the phone as modem option, and you get highspeed evdo for cheap. get a sanyo 9000, change the auth setting, and you can tether it w/out paying for the pam fee. BUT, if you don't have reception, you don't have reception. so sat is the only way to go. its annoying, but thats all you have really.

this site has some interesting hardware though.

also... they sell cellphone repeaters, and with that, you can extend the range of your phone. but its not really *that* great. it'll work somewhat, but the ones that work are expensive, and like i said, it only goes so far.
