I am new here and do not know if anyone has talked about the use of blutooth devices. So forgive me If this is a repeat. But I just can't get use to people walking about with a blinking device in thier ear and looking like they are talking to me or themselves. Are you that important that you can't pump your gas or pick up your lunch without being connected?? annoying!!!

That reminded me of a joke someone sent me the other day, very funny, taking place in a restroom, here it is:

This could happen to you.
I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the other stall saying:
'Hi, how are you?'

I'm not the type to start a conversation in the restroom but I don't know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed,
'Doin' just fine!'

And the other person says:
'So what are you up to?'

What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this is too bizarre so I say:
'Uhhh, I'm like you, just traveling!'

At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can when I hear another question. 'Can I come over?'

Ok, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just be polite and end the conversation. I tell them
'No.......I'm a little busy right now!!!'
Then I hear the person say nervously...
'Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions

I thought the same thing until I got a bluetooth earpiece. They are wonderful. You get a phone call and you just touch your ear and there the person is, in your ear.

How many times have you seen people trying to do something with a regular telephone cradled between their shoulder and their head? That was so common in business in the sixties that they invented (and still sell) a special thing to attach to the handset so it didn't fall off your shoulder.

Now days, the average cell phone is so small you can't do that and if you do, you will eventually drop the thing and break it. The bluetooth solves all that.

It is just a matter of time before people will learn to turn their head away from you so you can see the flash and people will also learn that is a signal they are not talking to you. If you think about it, when you are in public, it is not uncommon to overhear conversations between two people. Once you get accustomed to the blue flashing light, you adapt to it easily. Of course the best way to adapt is to simply get one yourself.

It isn't a matter of being important, it is a matter of someone may call your cell at any time no matter what you are doing and they have no idea you are pumping gas. The only thing I see wrong is people who have not learned that you don't have to shout into the thing. Keep it at a normal volume and people will not notice you that much.

Eventually, the bluetooth devices will get smaller and a good design change will be to have a light in the front of them so people can see the light when you face them head on.

If you really want to have some fun, turn the bluetooth off and walk up to a beautiful woman and say, "You sure are a wonderful person!" If she smiles, you are in. If she frowns, you point to your ear and say, "Ok, hun. I'll pick up the kids and see ya in about an hour. Love ya!"

i frequently must use my cell phone during the day for my job. my blutooth device has been very helpful as it is much safer to talk on the phone hands free then holding a phone to your ear and trying to drive it's not about being important........it's about doing my job. why would this bother you?

To me it looks like a person who wants to appear important. I can see it for a doctor but for average people walking about it just seems like overkill. And how can the other person hear you when the device is on your ear and not your mouth? Don't they hear all the noise around you? Oh but for driving I can definitely understand it. I am talking about the people in stores etc..

Here's the problem...
When the Bluetooth Borg People can't SHUT-THE-****-UP long enough to do basic business with real people standing in front of them !
They can't SHUT UP long enough to check into a hotel and the desk clerk can't figure out who they are talking to.
They can't SHUT UP long enough to pay for something at a store and the poor cashier can't tell who they are talking to.
Once again technology has gotten in the way of basic human interaction and arrogant losers can play holier than thou over people.
New Growth Industry ! Cell Phone Blocking Technology, get in on the ground floor today.
One day, cell phone users will be relegated to stand outside in the cold with the smokers.

I wonder if half the people walking around with them didn't pick up a three dollar toy and use it as an excuse for their psyco self to get away with talking to theirself in public...

Years ago while using a phone you employed manners. Now it seems the importance is on a vanity status. Technology is great, but text messages, why? I feel it's another way to take a few more dollars out of our pockets. Having a ear piece, walking around with it like it's a Star Trek toy, is just silly. I see these people too, usually younger and it's all about a "Look at me" type of thing. Many times in theaters, in restaurants, in places where you have to be quiet, it's annoying. I've turned around a few times and went out of my way to say something rude to those folks that have to talk during movies.

A Recent Example Young Woman In Therater:

"Hey! What's up?. Yeah were at the show. What are we seeing? I Am Legend.
We're are you? Yeah, we're going there after. How's Billy? He still mad at you? blah,. balh, blah,,,"

I walked from my chair, sat down next to her and told her how rude it was she was blabbing during the show, and that she now owed me 13 dollars. Sever people in the around us clapped and started cheering.

Last time I checked using a cell phone while pumping gas was illegal and quite dangerous.

I think most people look pretty silly wearing them - especially on all those episodes from Prison Break when the 'bad guys' were constantly using big ugly Motorola H500/H800 headsets.

They are very useful, I use my 'Borg implant'(my friend at work calls it that) all the time. I agree it can be a bit confusing, when I get a call the bluetooth rings but not the cell phone I just press the button on the device and start talking. I find the sound quality is actually better with the bluetooth than just using the phone alone and the person on the other end hears me perfectly well.

this is 2008: everyone has a cell phone. when i use mine or my bluetooth, i don't feel any differrent from when i am not. i do agree that there of course is a time and place in that i wouldn't use mine in a theatre, but having these devices is the norm now and essential for jobs other then those doctor have. in addition, texting is a godsend for the times when i don't want to have to get stuck in a conversation with someone, or when i don't want to use my talk minutes up.

Bluetooth headsets should only be used by drivers, I believe that is the sole purpose of owning one.

The only fools who wear them while walking down the street or shopping in Morrisons are idiots who just want to pose & want people to think "Wow, he/she must be really important". When in actual fact the majority of people (myself included) think you look a complete & utter tw*t.

What's wrong? Does it take too much energy to put your hand in your pocket to answer your phone!

Makes you look like an android.

There should be bluetooth rules, though. Not while driving with widows down.

Well bluetooth is convenient in many ways. For anyone who drives is means they can talk hands free. On the bus if its rush hour yep it will work wonders then considering your personal space is invaded during rush hour. In the winter when its always cold yep a big help ,keeps the hands warm. Those reasons are not so annoying for using it. Now there are some people who are tech geeks. They love technology and everything that can be done with it So they go all out with it. Its annoying when they always brag about it. But if they don't always brag about it, shouldn't effect ya.

We have to accept that technology marches ever forward invading and permeating our life. Otherwise you become Don Quixote fighting windmills.
The hardest thing for me to swallow is poor manners, inconsiderate and ego-centric behaviors, but I don't blame the technology/instrument.
The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the offender operating it.

how would you know what it feels like to wear one if you have never used one? and if you have, are you drawing from your own experience of how it made you feel important?. unless you have done a survey of all bluetooth users questioning them on what they feel like when they are using the device, you are making a massive generalization and being incredibly critical. personally i don't care if you think i look like a twit; i have to do my job. I have used a cell phone for 13 years, mostly for job related purposes (which happens irregardless of whether or not i am doing my personal chores).

^^^^^^Now I want one! There were those other Star Trek people who wore the fancy earring. Thats what the blue tooth reminds me of. I'll have to check with my young trekky friend. He'll know who I'm talking about.

Imagine...jewelry for your bluetooth!!!

I use my bluetooth when I drive since it's easier to drive with both hands on the steering wheel than fumbling around holding the phone. When I'm walking around I don't use it since it gets uncomfortable after awhile.

Plus coming early 2008, police where I live (Washington state) is going to give tickets to people talking on their cell phones while driving unless they have a hands free communication whether it be On Star or a bluetooth ear piece.

The illusion is within the person watching. When pagers came out, only doctors and people on call for technical stuff had them. When pagers went out of style, many of them were used by drug dealers on the street. Still the perception was with the person watching and having a pager didn't make you a doctor, nor a drug dealer nor an IT guru.

Bluetooth ear phones have a directional microphone that extends toward the person's mouth. A good one will work so well that the person speaking into it will be heard by the caller but no other sounds will be heard distinctly unless another person is standing right in front of their face. You can test this by setting your cell phone down on a table and walk three feet away and your caller will not be able to hear you clearly.

Some units are built into a pair of sunglasses and they are virtually non-detectable by sight. There are plans to make such glasses that have a video display in them so you can actually surf the web while doing other things with the computer in your pocket. Now that is going to really effect how we all communicate with each other. At present, I have heard that kids in school will call each other when they are in the same room. I often get more people calling my cell rather than pushing the doorbell button.

Just for those who don't know, the brand name "Bluetooth" is a technology and is not just for cellphones. You can get a Blutooth link to your computer and to your stereo and to stereo headphones and even your mouse and keyboard can be connected to your PC using the Bluetooth technology. It basically is just a form of wireless data transmission and you have to have a regular cell phone to use what we are discussing. The part in your ear is just a microphone and speaker with one or two control buttons for answering and hanging up and connecting three-way calls, etc.

It's the conversation itself and not the type of device in use that causes accidents. Having a phone call reduces your awareness of your immediate surroundings typically by 40-60%, and more if the call is especially engrossing. Having a hands-free set isn't going to do much, if anything, to reduce accidents.

Just another status symbol. I'm still me without it!

Most of these seem to not get used wisely but just as a show of ones own immaturity to deal with themself. Egocentrics, for the most part.

Bluetooth headsets are not just for techies and corporate goons, as a former over-the-phone tech support person for a cell phone carrier, I would often get phone calls that would start like this:

"I gots a new Boo-TOOF how da I huk it upp?"

What made this situation worse is that there is no such thing as "a bluetooth", because bluetooth is only a wireless transmission protocol and could apply to a phone to pc wireless connection, phone to car stereo connection, a bluetooth gps receiver, bluetooth stereo headphones, etc.

Me: "That shouldn't be a problem, what kind of device do you have?"
Them: "I Say-UD I gots a new Boo... TOOF!"

Not the Borg. It's the cybermen. They're using those ear-things to control you. Then they'll get you to march to their factories for re-assignment and where will you be then, eh? Think the Doctor will just appear out of nowhere to save you then? Them and the Daleks.
