PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Members of a Czech art group who hacked into television broadcasting with images of a hoax nuclear explosion were charged and will have to stand trial, a state prosecutor said Thursday. The six members of the Prague-based Ztohoven group were charged last month with spreading false information and face up to three years in jail if convicted, said Dusan Ondracek, the state prosecutor in the northern town of Trutnov, who is in charge of the case.
The trial could begin by the end of January, Ondracek said.
On June 17, viewers of a Czech television channel watching a Web cam program monitoring weather in various Czech mountain resorts could see a nuclear explosion taking place in the Krkonose or Giant Mountains in the northern Czech Republic.
In December, the project was awarded the NG 333 prize for young artists by Prague's National Gallery together with a cash prize of 333,000
and here is the actual footage from the hack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV4uUWn1XY8&feature=related
So much for the weather. And now to the sports desk. . .

When was the last time the head editor and publisher of a newspaper was jailed for printing lies? All they are asked to do is print a retraction, and that's only when they are sued in court.

(clarity for one of my biggest fans, DallasFlier)
excellent example of the EASE in which a HOAX of this nature is implemented. They hacked into a TV broadcast channel.
As opposed to an event which was broadcast live on multiple network TV outlets using different cameras at different locations, plus dozens of amateur videos of the same event, showing exactly the same thing.
showing exactly the same thing... showing exactly the same thing... showing exactly the same thing...
The hat is a perfect fit, thanks for asking.

| Hackers nuke the weather Posted: 7/3/2008 6:45:01 PM | I'm impressed, they even remembered to make it look as if the camera was shorting out. It was let down by the tiny innacuracies, like the buildings and surrounding trees not being reduced to kindling. A better hoax would probably involve a Martian tripod or a hoast of angels decending from heaven and putting up a sign that reads 'unsafe structure'.
On a similar note, over here in the UK a newspaper (The Daily Mail, I think) wound up in hot water after publishing a piece of concept art for the game Fallout 3 and claiming that the scene of nuclear devastation was found on an islamist website. I've lost the origional article though so don't quote me on that, but this stuff ain't new. Keeping an eye out for it barely even qualifies as paranoid these days.

| Hackers nuke the weather Posted: 7/3/2008 7:30:01 PM | Wow what a stupid analogy. not so stupid when you realize that the government didn't have to actually hack anything to accomplish their little fiasco against the people of the US , they simply needed to implement their little charade. Those other guys had to gain access illegally. The governments access tot the media was given because well ........... They control the whole thing . the media, it's employees, fema, Nist, Norad, and well evidently your mind. | |

| Hackers nuke the weather Posted: 7/4/2008 12:36:46 PM | How long.. at least since 1999? A telling little article about inserting digital images.. a technology company, Princeton Video Image.. gee, where have I heard that name before?
Wonder if Evan Fairbanks is or was an employee of their's?
On CBS News, Some of What You See Isn't There January 12th, 2000 If you were watching the “CBS Evening News” broadcast live from Times Square on New Year’s Eve, you might have seen a billboard advertising CBS News out in the square behind Dan Rather. You might have looked at the well-placed billboard and wondered just exactly how it was that CBS was able to place its ad so fortuitously.
The truth is, it didn’t. The billboard and the advertisement for CBS did not exist. The image was digitally imported onto the live CBS broadcast and used to obliterate real objects, the NBC Astrovision underneath the New Year’s ball and a Budweiser ad.
Steve Friedman, the executive producer of “The Early Show” .. Mr. Friedman said that the practice did not press the boundaries of ethical guidelines for CBS News. “It does not distort the content of the news,” he said..
Eric Shapiro, the director of the “CBS Evening News” and CBS News Special Events, said he might use the technology again on “Evening News” and that the news division examines each case individually before putting the virtual logos on the air.
“The technique, I find, works best if you put it someplace where there is intended to be something,” he said.

I've seen the t.v. fakery videos and they are spot on .I think the impossible camera angles , the nose out the back of the tower , and the aluminum plane piercing through concrete and steel like butter are very convincing.
In these crazy times , I think wearing a "tin foil hat" means you actually care to look into extremely important mega-events and form your own (non- m.s.m .) opinion .

Czech artists cleared over atomic TV stunt.
Its Media Reality project aimed to encourage people to think about how our perception of reality is shaped and manipulated by the media, and question the material that is presented to them.
"It drew attention to the possibility of using images of the world created by the media in place of the existing, real world," said a statement by the Ztohoven group on its MySpace profile page.
"We believe that even the free space of a public service broadcaster is able to endure such action and such impeachment. We hope our action will become an appeal for the future and remind the media of their duty to bring out the truth."

Statement made by art group ZTOHOVEN We are neither a terrorist organization nor a political group, our aim is not to intimidate the society or manipulate it, which is something we witness on daily basis both in real world and in the world created by the media. Whether the reasons are political interests, market interests, financial interests or interests of supranational companies – we meet hidden manipulation and attempt to invade the subconscious mind of citizens with specific products or ideology, using all available means. We do not think that a subtle distortion of such system or an appeal to pure common sense of people and their ability to remain unaffected are harmful, not even in a democratic society. That is why, several years ago, the art group "Ztohoven" penetrated the pub.

Interesting group. Grassroots versus astroturfing?? ...Manipulation of public opinion... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing
These stories always remind me of a movie I rented about a decade ago: The film explores serious themes, such as the manipulation of the mass media and public opinion...

Up until about 20 years ago there were a lot of people in the NATO countries prepared to do exactly that !

| Hackers nuke the weather Posted: 7/5/2008 11:41:01 AM | """...There's been a hell of a lot of dog wagging going as of late..""" Indeed.
"""...Excellent "movie"""' I didn't really like the ending, but having thought about it, it was appropriate that they showed how ugly things can get when the whole lid is threatened to be blown off a story. Maybe a few old reviews of Wag the Dog would be good to see how a movie done in 1997 has proven itself to be shockingly scary. I don't think I can ever forget the scene when they had the american girl in front of a blue screen on their set reworked to look like a poor and raped slavic girl trying to rescue her cat which was actually a bag of chips in her hand. 1997 remember. Special effects same as what Cameron used to win Oscars with the Titanic.
Really makes you wonder about some things unless, like some people, they just want to blow it all off. I've said it before, so I've said it; How many folks thought Woodward and Bernstein were tin foil hat wearers 35 years ago before they exposed the entire Nixon administration? But no, it could never happen right? Ok. Whatever you say. Fool me once shame on me. Fool me twice, then someone is just a fool.
A few reviews around the globe of a decade old satirical movie about making false television stories and blindly leading people. Salesfolks have known about some of these techniques for years. Directing the prospects mind into desired channels by making a series of seemingly logical, and agreeable statements in order to obtain the desired responses. Levinson hit it on the head with this film. A comedy that's not really all that funny.
If all this is too long, just don't bother reading it.
... ingenious solution is to create a fake war to distract the public http://www.avclub.com/content/node/3272 -----------------------
A war in Albania just might do the trick. In the good old days, the president would just invade. With modern technology, it's even cleaner. The hungry press looks for any lead, convenient misinformation is created by the latest Hollywood fakery ("all developed by the new James Cameron film") creating images and merchandise all instantly packaged. And it must be real, because it's on TV. David Mamet's script never questions the morals or the absolute secrecy needed to pull this thing off. He and director Barry Levinson have enough truth in the story to make you wonder what is real news and what is just promotion the next time you see CNN...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120885/amazon ---------------------
... I gotta wonder how many people will leave the theater not realizing that the object of ridicule here is not politicians or the media but the American people.
Why Albania? DeNiro's spin doctor is asked. His response: Why not? Nobody knows anything about Albania. And unfortunately, this is the truth. How many Americans bought the Gulf War line that the U.S. was coming to the aid of a democratic Kuwait? How many Americans knew then or know now that only 15 percent of Kuwaiti citizens are eligible to vote?
It's easy to blame the media: Boo hoo, they lied to us! But unless and until news consumers are able to discern truth from fiction and hold the media accountable, nothing will change. And I firmly believe that most people don't care whether a news story is true or not, as long as it's entertaining. Which why news is all blood and guts and body counts and scandal and never tough, complicated stories about the things that really affect us all -- in-depth studies of politics and legislation, the search for solutions for poverty and crime and illiteracy, and so on.
The only people that seem to care about the truth these days are conspiracy buffs, and they go overboard in the other direction -- "Nothing is true," they say, "except what we tell you." http://www.flickfilosopher.com/blog/1998/01/wag_the_dog_review.html ----------------- good old roger ebert: ...an example of how easy it is to whip up patriotic frenzy, and how dubious the motives sometimes are.
... media blitz. As spokesmen warn of Albanian terrorists skulking south from Canada with ``suitcase bombs,...fakes news footage of a hapless Albanian girl (Kirsten Dunst) fleeing from rapists with her kitten. (Dunst is an American actress, and the kitten, before it is created with special effects, is a bag of Tostados.) But what about a martyr? ...It's creepy how this material is absurd and convincing at the same time
``Why does a dog wag its tail?'' Brean asks at one point. ``Because the dog is smarter than the tail. If the tail was smarter, it would wag the dog.'' In the Breanian universe, the tail is smarter, and we, dear readers, are invited to be the dogs. http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19980102/REVIEWS/801020302/1023 ---------- Hollywood and Presidential politics - perfect together. Anyone who doubts this simple maxim will face a challenge to their opinion when they see Wag the Dog,
http://www.reelviews.net/movies/w/wag.html ------------------------ This is the scene that i remember only too well from the movie:
... an amazing feat of fake newscasts and war footage that looks so real even I would have been led into it. The funniest scene comes when a young girl (Kirsten Dunst) is told to run against a blue screen, holding a bag of chips. The effect being done is a young Albanian girl running across a burning bridge holding a kitten (!) while in the background guns and missiles are going off.
http://www.bigscreen.com/ReaderReview.php?movie=WagtheDog -------------------- Stanley's fake newsreel of a frightened village girl rescuing her cat wins the public's heart. When "Wag the Dog" works, it's because its satirical points don't require underlining: Americans are incredibly ignorant about remote reaches of the world; the media have lost their zeal for genuine investigation and will suck up whatever crumbs are dropped from the palace gates; we're addicted to images of conflict, from tragic spectacle (Sarajevo) to video game (the Gulf War). ....
...To ensure he stays in office, it's up to his press secretary (Heche) and "manager" (DeNiro) to create a diversion that will knock the scandal out of the voting public's minds. The only thing big enough to bury this story is a full scale war. The only problem, besides the massive cost, is the lack of a worthwhile enemy. Their solution: manufacture the conflict. Who better to create a believable illusion than Hollywood? It's not easy, but they convince the best producer in town (Hoffman) to come on board for the project of his life. Of course, he can never tell a living soul about it. They create the perfect war with footage of a bombed-out city, a meaningful theme song and a heartbreaking hero. ...The true nature of DeNiro's job is ... clearly connected to some dangerous people, ones who can make a messy situation disappear for good...Their manipulation of the press, both believable and scary. It makes one wonder what disturbing pieces of information are being manufactured for us to swallow. Or what the government is trying to keep secret from us.
http://crazy4cinema.com/Review/FilmsW/f_wagdog.html ------------------------ Some various comments from around the globe: ...This is an American political satire classic that is sadly becoming less satire as time goes on.
...I do not understand the people who did not like the movie. For me this is the greatest political satire since Chaplin's "The great dictator". Both de Niro and Hoffman are great as well. This movie is not about Clinton although they did predict correctly the Kosovo war, and Albanian terrorists. It is about American political system which is made by and for TV...
...Wag the Dog is a brilliant satire of the American political system with enough realism to make it plausible. It speaks the strongest to people who already have a visceral loathing of the American democratic process (not how it was in 1789 but how it is now). They see a degraded and ignorant public easily duped by politicians who are no more than habitual liars who will say anything to get elected but lack any idealism whatsoever.
...A war built on a string of lies seemed so outrageous that it was impossible to take a movie like this seriously. Well, circumstances change...The story seems equally outrageous now, but in a very different sense of the word.
...Spinning a Yarn,`Wag the Dog' is another film that proves to have been unintentionally prophetic.... The parallels with the more recent Iraq war are perhaps less exact, although the scenes involving the supposed hero `Old Shoe' were strongly reminiscent of the ballyhoo surrounding Private Jessica Lynch.
...People may think of "Wag the Dog" as fiction, but time and again, the movie has shown itself to be reality. Whether it was Bush Sr. coming up with the Gulf War to distract people from the Savings and Loans scandal, Clinton threatening military action against Iraq to distract people from the Lewinsky thing, Bush Jr. invading Iraq as a we-can't-find-Osama diversion, or the current threats against Iran, this movie is the hilarious but unfortunate truth.
...Generally, this movie preaches that people will believe what they are told and hate whom they're told to hate. Unfortunately, there's a lot of truth in that.
...Boring? No. Thought-provoking? Absolutely. And, for that reason, I think a lot of people will not like this movie..
...People who want to sit down and have a nice neat story poured into their heads will hate this movie...DeNiro, referring to the Gulf War shot of a laser-guided bomb blowing up a building, says something like "I was there when they filmed it. It was a 1/4 scale model". Hoffman says "Is that really true?" DeNiro smiles and says "Who's to say?"
...What makes this movie so special, is the fact that it isn't far from the truth. This movie was made in 1997, but it is so unbelievably relevant today that it almost makes you feel this producers could see the future. If you see what happened with George W. Bush (his failure to capture Osama Bin Laden before the elections, starting a war in Iraq to camouflage this failure...), you can only watch this movie with your mouth wide open. OK, there is a difference between the truth and this story of course, but in the end you really can see many similarities...
...These are the movies that open our eyes !!! America , with the help of Freud's nephew that was Hitler's main producer for selling the WW2 to the German people , learned how to sell it's own garbage to the American people and the whole world . Yes , after WW2 , Freud's nephew was employed by The Pentagon for more than 20 years . He is the one that "sold" the dismantling of Yugoslavia into 6 countries that are still raging social wars just because the U.S.A. was afraid by the fact that Yugoslavia and Romania could be presented as good examples of perfectly functional socialist economies . After working for Hitler , he was taken under the wing of the Pentagon to help them sell everything like Korea , Vietnam , Yugoslavia , Iraq I , etc . In real life , he was The Producer ...There is no free press ...P.S. Read the book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins
