| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 2:21:35 AM | I don't recall a time when I didn't like a "power nap"..or more. I always found it to be natures pain releiver as well..so..I have been taking naps..quite regularly. It beats the pants off of pill-popping! I always know where I am when I get up..I'm not in some deep fog..and I can perform menial tasks much better. They can be very productive. Hence..the term "power nap". | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 3:22:18 AM | As far as I am concerned naps are an essential part of life. The siesta in latin cultures is one of the smartest customs I know of. Our bodies were not built to be awake for 16 or more hours a day without rest as many long-term sleep studies have shown. As long as it doesn't interfere with your sleep at night, | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 4:32:26 AM | Good point..sometimes taking too long a nap in the afternoon can lead to problems with insomnia..or..getting your days and nights confused. That's what makes the power nap the best type. No shorter then 10 mins I believe..and no longer than..I thought it was 20 mins. Anybody know?
I go for the 20 min naps. | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 4:34:11 AM | I can stay awake and spend a week or two engaged in busy activity but I'm supposed to be maintaining a low stress lifestyle. I nap when I need to. It's refreshing and I too wake up sharper than before I went to bed.
The last while my apartment looks like I'm maintaining a 'someone broke in during the night and used my place as a sqat' lifestyle but I can turn that around easily which is part of the reason I'm up so early on a Sunday.

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 5:03:00 AM | Sleep is when the body regenerates itself. Diet can contribute to sleep problems. Notice how a heavy meal sends you to the couch, but a light meal can satisfy your hunger but not make you sleepy? That jolt of candy or soda in the afternoon--the sugar will elevate you for the short term, but notice you are sleepy when you get home from work. I like honey naps, but don't get them anymore. (If you have never heard the term honeynap--that is where you and your honey go to bed in the middle of the day to take a nap, at some point you will sleep). | |

I can't remember where i read it but i remember reading an article that said that nappers are more relaxed and not as cranky as non nappers.

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 5:35:12 AM | | LOL...now that's silly! Afternoon naps are ALWAYS ok (if you can manage them), and generally recommended for people of all ages. I would surely take afternoon naps if I could - but I just can't seem to go to sleep while the sun's up :( | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 5:40:40 AM | Yes, if I sit down in the afternoon I will nap. I'm waiting for the dayI can nap standing up. I think its coming soon!!!!!!!!!!! | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 6:34:50 AM | Everyone is different but if a nap helps you feel more refreshed and doesn't interfere with your night time sleep...go for it.
I recently read some where that "power naps" under 30 minutes were actually beneficial to some people.
I'm not sure what age has to do with it, except that it does seem for may of us our sleep has become erratic. I for one can not take a power nap, it will interfere with my ability to fall asleep at bed time.

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 6:47:14 AM | | Your body will most always let you know it needs a rest.Just laying there is as beneficial as is napping. Each person is different some have to,some don't. | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 7:18:39 AM | I worked in the transportation industry and it was recommended that if you got tired to pull over and take a nap because your mind starts to drift making accidents more likely to happen. Even 15 minutes can make you much sharper mentally.
Personally I prefer "naps" when it is shared with someone and sleep isn't the primary reason for being in bed.

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 7:30:19 AM | Naps are gooooood unless you shouldn't be napping (personal belief)!
Tip: Take a large bunch of keys in your hand and hold them as you drift off to sleep. The noise when they hit the floor wakes you up and marks the end of a power nap long enough to have done you good. (Read that somewhere scientific...)

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 8:06:33 AM | I'll admit to napping during the day sometimes. Drive for living and midday after lunch if there is a slow time between deliveries I allow my eyes a rest. Not everyday, just when there are slow periods. | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 8:51:11 AM | Afternoon naps are ok at any age! I think you'll find the majority of us don't get enough sleep or rest, not a good thing. Hmm, thought to ponder, why should any of us over the age of 45 have to ask if anything is ok? | |
|
| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 8:53:30 AM | OP- naps are absolutely ok! In fact, if my computer goes any slower I will be taking one in about 5 min! I think probably the only times that aren't ok are: 1. If you have trouble sleeping at night, 2. if you are at work and your boss is looking, and 3. if you are driving in heavy traffic. Just kidding...naps are great! | |

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 8:56:09 AM | SueCat hun? The answer to that question is an absolute and resounding NO!
I see nothing wrong with it if one is tired and your schedule allows you to do so. I have always thought that perhaps 15 minutes mid day at work should be allowed to either rest or have a quick slumber. I find these power naps are most invigorating and put me back on track. Sad part is, I can't do that at work! Nothing fun about sitting at your desk in front of the computer, head drooping!

i most be the only bloke napping or the only that willing to admit to napping
Oh, he11 no... Before I did the disability retirement thing, I'd get home from work, sit down to relax for a bit, and nap out for 20 or 30 minutes. Not always everyday, but often enough that it was a habit. When I was commuting I'd drop off for 15 minutes or so in the train, between stops. It's a recharge of the system, allowed the brain to shut off temporarily (the ex would say it never came back on), or sometimes focus on an activity or problem that needed a fresh perspective.
I figure as long as you're not putting dinner in to cook and then using the smoke detector as an wake-up alarm, or it interferes with normal sleep or other bedroom time, having an afternoon snooze is a rare treat for many.

| are afternoon naps ok once over 45 Posted: 1/6/2008 10:32:19 AM | When my Dad retired ,Mom wouldn't let him take a nap because she believed you would die early if you napped every day. Dad goes for his physical and the Dr asked him how he was feeling and Dad says fine except I get tired some afternoons. The Dr replies "take a nap". Dad says "my wife won't let me". The Dr wrote a prescription for one nap daily as needed. Mom was pissed but Dad started taking naps when he wanted. | |
