Legalizing Tasers for personal use ........ ?Page 1 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
Reading an article this morning's paper discussing legalizing Tasers in Canada, as a personal defense version of the popular stun gun.

The article goes on to voice the controversary and references some high profile Taser-related deaths including that of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski, who died Oct. 14 after RCMP officers stunned him with a Taser at Vancouver International Airport.

So the issue of legalization is on the fence.

And a thought occured to me. People are allowed to have guns, which would surely kill another individual before a Taser would so where's the issue? I mean it's not like people don't use guns everyday to kill someone; we can't have some personal protection ourselves which wouldn't likely take another's life but, potentially save our own?

Your thoughts?

I wouldnt be placing your order just yet lol.
I honestly cant see the Govt legalizing these when they wont even legalize mace spray.
Isnt it strange that you can go into a sporting goods store and legally buy a can of bear repellant. Ask for a can of mace spray only to be told thats prohibited in Canada.
Put a can of each side by side and look at the ingredients and decipher what the difference is???????

There again legalizing both might make for some pretty interesting POF wing nights lol.
Is he reaching for my boobs or his drink better not take chances spray him and zap him anyway.

No need for more thoughts Tasers will not be legalized in the very near future.

I have visions of a bunch of drunks going "watch this" and then seeing one of them hitting the ground while the rest pee themselves laughing

or

some woman madder then a wet hen at her cheating man going "we'll see if you do that again" and going "zap" and him needing viagra for the rest of his life....

or

me - going "Watch this" and falling to the floor as I accidently shoot myself instead of my intending target....

yep - lets legalize them....

^^^ SS and Em you are BOTH wingnuts .........

I agree with y'all. I'm not "for it". I'm just trying to figure out why they will legalize guns which do kill but are questioning their morals on Tasers ........

Guns are only marginally legal in Canada.
You need a special license to own one.
To qualify for the license you need to take various multi-week courses.
You can keep them but only if they're locked up separately from the ammunition.
You can carry them but only in a secure, locked container on your way to the gun club or hunting range.
So the average law-abiding citizen really has no access to a gun should they need to defende themselves, and will be prosecuted if they shoot an intruder on their own property.
Meanwhile, the bad guys all have guns which are unregistered and unlicensed.

A taser needs to make contact to be effective; which means allowing bad guy to get close to you... its hardly something that will keep you safe and that you can use to deter an attacker completely, like, say... a handgun.
And because it's an ineffective defense mechanism the Canadian government will likely legalize it.

I hear ya Winnipeg Gal but my point is you can still "get" a gun ..... but now with Tasers, they're questioning their values .....

A gun has legitimate non-self defence uses. We can use them for target shooting or we can use rifles and shotguns to go hunting. The taser has one function, zapping people. You can't walk the streets with a loaded firearm. If tasers are allowed for public use, ndividuals will be carrying them everywhere they go.

I agree with an earlier poster that they are very unlikely to allow these things, unless there are all kinds of conditions attached to their use.

If they did allow them, how long until some four year old gets his/her hands on one and zaps mom or dad with it.

I soooooo want one,or two!!! Just for some of my co-workers I all ready have the rest of the toys.

Wpg Gal was correct with all here info expect one. Handguns must be in a locked case and out of sight, long guns my maybe transported out of a case, but must be trigger locked and in case if the car/truck is left unattended. In rural areas, long guns are allowed to be stored for easy access for pest control/defence of animals. This does not mean you can have your whole collection by the door, just what you may need.

You can now get a combination taser / mp3 player with headphones. I guess you have to be really careful with which button you push.

Pick up your very own iTaser, which combines the Classic 80GB iPod and the new iPhone with a Taser. Zap some f*cker, call the cops to pick him/her up and walk away while whistlin' a tune!

Guaranteed fun for everyone!!

The problem with making Tasers legal is that the bad guys would also be able to have them and it would make their life easier if they want to rob or rape someone. They would only get a slap on the wrist if they do get caught because they did not rally injure anyone. Same with pepper spray.

Now if you had pepper spray in your house for use when you go hiking through the woods you are breaking no laws. If you happened to reach for it if an intruder comes in your house....

I can hardly wait to have my 1st taser party.Anyone want to come?

I am licenced to own handguns, but I can't own one with a barrel length of 4 or less inches. I also cannot own a taser, mace, brass knuckles,a switchblade or butterfly knife,a set of nunchakus, throwing stars,or an armband with spikes on it. Those are all prohibited weapons because they are obviously much more dangerous than a handgun.

^^^^LOL!!

Seriously though, with guns, it's easy to tell what gun shot you, and then hopefully, who shot you... guns leave a sort of "fingerprint" whereas (i think, correct me if I'm wrong) tasers just send a couple electrodes into your skin. Pin pricks. So you would have no hope of finding out who tased you, and it could easily be used for practical jokes. Sticking a pushpin into someone would leave the same amount of damage, but it wouldn't be nearly as funny... Hmm, ok well actually I guess it might be... But anyways, a taser weilding prankster would likely get away with it, the tasee would be left relatively unharmed, and the sicko would be off to find his next victim.

Besides, they're akward. It's not practical. We need Star Trek style stun guns.

Guns are only marginally legal in Canada. the bad guys all have guns which are unregistered and unlicensed.
And the liberals want an outright ban on them wich will do nothing to reduce crime.

As for all of the law abiding gun owners... It is aganst the Law to use a firearm for Self-defence purposes in Canada. If you do!!! you Can be charged, lose your firearms license and have all of your guns confiscated by the police.

I think pepper spray might be a better self-defence item if they would only legalize it so people could use it.
I Came to the Conclusion years ago that It is pritty much against the law to defend yourself in Canada.

From the Taser website:
All cartridges are compatible with the M- and X-series TASER devices and include a patented Anti-Felon Identifcation System (AFID) so that each cartridge use can be traced.

AND you can get customised skins for the taser now. Look good and be trendy while you shock your attacker.
