| Video: Magnesium Burning Between Bricks of Dry Ice Posted: 1/12/2008 11:12:09 PM | This looked like fun: While it doesn't quite seem as counter-intuitive as sodium burning in water, it really is quite impressive

| Video: Magnesium Burning Between Bricks of Dry Ice Posted: 1/12/2008 11:35:29 PM | | Hmmm... I know little of the forum character other than the mostly very unscientific topics that I saw being debated. Posting a science demonstration seems a perfectly reasonable use of a science forum. I don't see anything on the forum rules other than my failed attempt at putting in a proper link that could make it flagged for deletion, but perhaps I am missing something. | |

| Video: Magnesium Burning Between Bricks of Dry Ice Posted: 1/13/2008 3:26:17 AM | Magnesium + carbon dioxide -> magnesium oxide + carbon
Magnesium is higher up in the reactivity series than carbon and can displace it from it's compounds. Is there much difference between this and the thermit reaction?
I for one think that the video was really rather good, and intend to show it to my students.
Ta.
Dunno about the posting rules, can't comment there, though.

| Video: Magnesium Burning Between Bricks of Dry Ice Posted: 1/13/2008 6:02:36 AM | Fun to watch but not surprising as the CO2 has its bonds broken by the energy released from the burning Magnesium which in turn give it the oxygen it needs to support combustion. It explains why there is carbon left, too.
So rather than getting it from the air it gets it from the solid dry ice. Like thermite as the other user said.
It's against the rules to embed video so I wouldn't even try as I believe its punishable by permanent deletion. The auto delete feature -- well everyone wrestles with that. Seems your thread made it by it. But threads need a point, a discussable nonchattable topic. What is the topic/point of this one?

| Video: Magnesium Burning Between Bricks of Dry Ice Posted: 1/15/2008 6:05:44 PM | | Saw a video where a guy dumped a can of liquid oxygen on about a hundred bags of charcoal...that had a small firestarter block lite on it. The resulting fireball was seen up to 7 miles away...but...the bbq was on time cause it almost instantly burned the whole shebangs into a good hot bed! Of course, the fire department and th cops kind of took a dim view of it, even when they were phoned and told the situation seconds after the resulting explosion, and also told there was no danger. | |

when Magnesium burns, you lust let it go till it runs out of fuel...
Not true, you could put it out with helium. Which btw is what is used as the inert gas when it's welded.

The fire dept has to investigate even if they're told there's no danger. I worked at a place where we used a fog machine one night. It set off the fire alarm and the fire dept showed up. We told them that the fog machine started the alarm but we still had to evacuate the building while they did a walk through.

I think I've seen that video too, years ago, but can't find it now.
Potassium is a lot of fun too:

How to put out Magnesium fire? It is safe to use a Class D dry chemical fire extinguisher, else the fire should be covered with sand or magnesium foundry flux. Another easy way to put out small magnesium fire is to place a polyethene bag filled with dry sand on top of the fire. The heat of the fire will melt the bag and the sand will flow out onto the fire.
