Posted: 1/15/2008 6:56:37 AM | I am all about saving money and making goodies for the kids . This is something my Grandma used to make for us when we was younger . You take a can of cheap biscuits and stick your finger throught the middle of them to make a hole in the middle . Swirl it around on your finger to make the hole bigger ,but not too big . Drop them in a pan of hot oil and fry until brown . Put them on a plate to cool for a bit and while they are cooling ,get 2 zip lock freezer bags and put powdered sugar in one bag and granulated sugar and cinnamon in the other . Drop the cooled donut in the freezer bag , and shake . Presto donuts .
If you happen to like donut holes then cut the biscuit in 1/2 and roll into a ball and drop into the hot oil . Coat them the same as you did the donuts . | |

I think I'm going to try this myself! It's a nice thing to be able to do if you want one or two donuts and you don't want to go out and then buy a dozen because they are so much cheaper that way, oh marketing.
I guess you would have to stay away from the flakey type of biscuit but maybe that could work too. French pastry is pretty flakey, it's French after all.
Adding some great Marrionberry Jam to that would be great!

Posted: 1/15/2008 9:50:21 AM | I made them for my kids when they were little. They loved them on cold mornings. Sometimes I mixed a little milk with confectioners (powdered) sugar and drizzled on them. A little Hersheys syrup mixed in made it chocolate icing.
Edit: It is really amazing all the things you can do with a can of biscuits. | |

I showed a Cherokee friend this who makes fry bread all the time and she was amazed LOL. We used all the different coatings mentioned at one time or another. I do find that coating them while still a little warm works better for me. | |
