I posted about going to Syria a while back. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out. My next option is Santorini. Has anyone been there? Would you have any advice as to places to visit or places to stay? I'd be travelling alone.

Any thoughts at all are appreciated.

Santorini is no.1. favourite place for me on all Earth! go!

stay: in Oia or Fira. apartments looking at the vulcano cost double.

sightsee:
1.boat trip tp the vulcano with a boat of glass bottom.
we had a stop and passangers could jump to the sea and bath there in the red-brown water full of iron. sulfur also. due to vulcanic activity.
2. Oia Sunset Point
3.Fira - biggest town on island.
4.donkeys...
5.the scenery..
6.greek food, wine, dances...

got ferry connections to other cyclades islands...can organize 1-2 day trips.

Mykonos is probably the other best choice. Mykonos is the "party island" and got some windmills as "folklore" an a part of the island called "little Venice". I remember we had a party on Paradise Beach....the other was Superparadise Beach...they are as good as they sound

it's safe also. very touristic on both islands. the only problem is the "too much tourist in July-August. the islands are really packed that time - they nearly sink!

enjoy!

I agree with everything above.

There are also some black sand beaches in Santorini. Too hot to walk on. You can rent ATV's and go wherever you want.

Another island worth seeing is Rhodes, if you have time.

that's when i usually go.. it's still very hot . the evenings are a little cooler which is nice since a/c isn't as big a feature as it is here. i have a different view of the island. i like to stay at the black beach 'perrisa' and take the bus into town for the sunset. i like having dinner on the water. i like the simplicity. it's very laid back. most of the accomodation is in smaller hotels -10 rooms or so.

Go off-season. It is packed wall to wall with tourists during the summer.

Santorini is beautiful. Fly in Athens and take the ferry or Hydrofoil from Pireus. All beaches are black and red pebble rocks, the island is of volcanic origin. 365 churches, one for each day of the year. Stay in Oia (Chora). Don't go before May or later than October, it gets chilly.
Very safe to travel alone. If you get bored, you can always ride the ferry to one of the other islands around. It's a lot of fun to island jump. Pack light, you don't wanna haul a big ol' great wardrobe there.

it's beautiful, be careful of the water, even the bottled stuff! Sept is good. The "let's Go" books do a great job on accomodation and food ideas!

Santorini is beautiful with its white washed buildings. When we first took the boat from Crete to Santorini we were a little worried since it looked like white snow on the hilltops only to discover the beautiful white washed buildings throughout the island. Definitely rent a scooter since the island is very small and you can get around easier. When you get off the boat there will be people coming up to you to show you there room for rent. Get a Lonely Planet book as well.

Go to the historical Museum on Santorini in Fira town.

Usually, those kinds of museaum bore me, but Santorini is fascinating! They have salvaged many great artifacts from the civilizations that developed there before they were wiped out by volcanos.

Also, if you walk all the way to the end of the shopping streets at the highest point in Fira town (before all the stores disappear), there's a sign hanging in the alley that just says "workshop" and a crazy old guy who makes handmade jewelry. I asked him why he didn't move to the center of town, but he said, "people would come in my store all day and bother me"

He has some beautiful stuff, all made with the stones from Santorini and silver overlays that he designed; olive trees, the swallow (symbol for greek independance). He is crazy, but a great craftsman. Nice souvenir for sure!

I went there years ago and loved it. Did the island hopping with the ferry and flew back from Santorini to Athens. It was september or start of Oct and perfect weather for me there. I'd rate it as one of the most romantic places I've been. Walking through the cobblestone streets at night.... wow.

Santorini (or Thira, Fira) is a magical place. Many believe the lost city of Atlantis is said to be beneath the waters on one end of the island (Akrotiri). When I was there it was early June and the weather was perfect for everything -- warm in the day and cool at night.

We took a ferry from Crete and arrived on the western part of the island. If you arrive in the main town, Thira, take a donkey ride UP to the town. Accomodations can be simple, clean and inexpensive or as luxurious as you're willing to pay. Do the sightseeing on the island...the black beaches, the white beaches, vineyards, Akrotiri...or just walk around the twisting little streets and visit the shops. Jewelry is a must, especially the 23 K gold...I got a little Alexander the Great coin pendant, very reasonable, and a cabouchon amethyst ring from Nick the Jeweler (there are a lot of Nick the Jewelers there...lol). I kept going back to his shop unable to make up mind...we chatted so much, he asked me and my then-fiance to join he and his wife at his anniversary party that evening!

That turned out to be the most magical evening of my entire trip! The restaurant where the party was held was carved into the mountainside and the room we were in held a long table in a candlelit cave. Twenty people drank the local wine (retsina), feasted on amazing food, and became no longer strangers. I know I am digressing a bit, but something very strange happened...while talking to one of Nick's neices, who was my age, we discovered that were were born in the same hospital in New Jersey one month apart...so small world to say the least! That evening I also had the pleasure to sing (I am a professional opera singer) in that acoustically perfect cave! Needless to say, the evening culminated in lots more wine and Greek dancing! A perfect storybook night!

Back to Santorini, there are lots of American, German and Australian tourists as well as college-aged kids that work on the island in the summers. Some all year round. There are all sorts of restaurants, Chinese, American, etc. There are plenty of water activities as well. We took a cruise from the main port to the volcano island and did a small hike -- the boat also took us to hot springs near the island where we could jump off the ship and swim...amazing!

If you go to Greece, you simply have to go to Santorini...

My commission from the Greek Tourist Board should be arriving any day now...lol

I was in Greece & Turkey 13 years ago - did a cruise and land tour ... didin't go to Santorini, but I did go to Mykonos and Rhodes. Loved Mykonos - even though I was there for only one evening. I can still recall the gentle breeze, music from the taverns and laughter on the island. Most of all the most incredible sunset I have ever witnessed. Loved it, loved it,loved :o)
Turkey was amazing too, Ephessus, Istanbul, Kusadasi and a little seaside 'resort' and I really mean small - the name escapes me now ... had a great time :o)

There's a restaurant called "ambrosia" in Santorini that's supposed to have one of the best views in the world.
