| Favorite drive? Posted: 1/19/2008 10:48:19 AM | I saw posts on various favorite places, lakes, etc.
I didn't see one for favorite place to drive. It also could be a memorable drive.
I'll start by saying Highway 1, Northern California. From Half Moon Bay south to ...say Hearst Castle area. Why? Fabulous coastline, gigantic trees, the whole nine yards. Even a lighthouse. Just something about it.
Which one sticks out for you?

| Favorite drive? Posted: 1/19/2008 5:20:08 PM | | When I was living in Newfoundland I had to spend a summer going back and forth between St. John's and Ferryland. The Newfoundland coastline at moments is breathtaking, the whole Avalon Peninsula actually when I did some driving to other places was gorgeous...the rough North Atlantic crashing against the rocks and cliffs, the cold wind...it is at moments hauntingly beautiful. | |

| Favorite drive? Posted: 1/22/2008 7:02:38 AM | Oysterloaf - if you want company let me know! Thats a drive I've wanted to take for years.
I rather enjoy just wandering around - when I'm in England I've learned to keep my cell phone charged and have an atlas - it's so beautiful and GREEN that I'm likely to end up in the most unusual places. When I was a kid and lived in Germany I loved watching for castles on the mountain slopes. Can't say I much enjoy driving in cities, but I DO love exploring and looking for places I'd like to see more closely.

| Favorite drive? Posted: 1/26/2008 10:11:05 AM | Yes, Newfoundland is very nice in places. The Humber Valley is one of the most scenic places on earth in autumn. The northern peninsula is scenic as well (Lance Aux Meadows with the viking settlement).
I've driven far and wide on this continent and some places that come to mind are: Newfoundland (Humber Valley, look for the man in the mountain) New Brunswick (along the Saint John River) Florida (along the beaches) Georgia (Savannah) Tennesee (the mountains) Oregon (again, the mountains) Washington (Rockies)
I've been through a few major cities as well but it's not easy to appreciate them when you're fighting traffic.

Seriously, my favourite has to be across the Yorkshire Moors in the UK. Incredible scenery interspersed with some lovely country pubs.

Going through Albuquerque at night is awesome, The Moutains there are too steep for me though. I take interstate 40

| Favorite drive? Posted: 2/17/2008 7:24:29 PM | One of my favorite drives is Pacific Coast Highway 1. Truly beautiful.
I suppose the most memorable drive was going through the Alps (on the way to Spain). We were little at the time, it was snowing hard enough that my oldest brother had to get out in front of the car, walk, and guide while my Dad drove. On the same trip, we blew a small hole in our gas tank. Mother had us 4 kids chewing gum like crazy. Dad was able to patch the leak with the gum until we could get to a gas station.

| Favorite drive? Posted: 2/19/2008 9:46:54 AM | 1) PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) from north of Santa Barbara to just outside the Bay Area.
Then from Point Reyes to the Columbia River.
Spectacular.
2) US 52 - Runs through the Driftless Zone in NE Iowa and SE MN. Beautiful drive w/ great views of the Mississippi and the bluffs along it.
3) US 19 - Through the Smokies.
Winding and dangerous, but well worth the trip.
4) California Highways 70, 120,128.
70 - The section that runs through Feather River Canyon.Superb 120 - The section that runs through Yosemite. OUTSTANDING 128 - Runs through the wine country of Napa. Excellent weekend drive.
5) Interstate 70 - Glenwood Canyon to Utah line. Great drive through the Rockies.

| Favorite drive? Posted: 2/22/2008 8:05:49 PM | The Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia is wonderful. Beautiful coastal views, hills and rocky cliffs. It's far enough from Melbourne to not be too busy most of the time. A lot of nice towns along the way, Apollo Bay is one of my favourite places. | |

| Favorite drive? Posted: 2/24/2008 6:00:38 PM | | Could not agree with you more on that one. Hwy 1 goes a long way and sadly it will be years before i see that again. I use to ride my bicycle from santa cruz up past davenport and on to half moon bay all along the coast. | |

| Favorite drive? Posted: 2/28/2008 5:08:50 AM | Wow. Some amazing responses...from all parts of the world.
Sorry, I neglected to add one stretch of road to my original post.
In New York State. Just a few miles from a place called Port Jervis on Route 97.It's called the Hawks Nest. It overlooks the Delaware River a few hundred feet below and rocks above you (it even has a sign or two alerting you of falling rocks). I think that you can recognize it in car ads in magazines from time to time. Lots of twists and turns. During the fall season you get to catch a view of the colors. Pretty remarkable.

| Favorite drive? Posted: 2/28/2008 4:38:44 PM | Leaving Seattle on I-90 at first light will put you at Snoqualmie pass at dawn, just as first light is hitting Lake Kachess. Beautiful. You should be getting to Ellensburg just at full light. From there 2 options:
1. Stay on I-90 to a GORGEOUS overview of the Columbia River canyon and Columbia Plateau. Turn north to Wenatchee, then take highway 2 back through Stevens Pass. Back through Gold Bar and Monroe to Seattle. Beautiful mountain scenery and some neat desert looks along the way.
2. Head south through Yakima and turn west through White's Pass. This will take you to Mount Ranier National Park. Turning left will take you around the mountain and eventually back to I-5, north to Seattle. On a clear day you can't beat this trip.
