| Translations of the Holy Qur'an Posted: 1/20/2008 6:18:11 PM | I've recently become interested in studying Islam more in depth, and was curious as to what English translation is the best one to read. I know there are many, however is there actually an English translation that is accepted in the Islamic world by scholars, clerics, laypersons and so forth?
Any help with this would be great.

| Translations of the Holy Qur'an Posted: 1/21/2008 9:48:30 AM | - I suggest you get a few different translation of the Koran if you want to go in depth. That's what I have done with almost every religion.
- In your case, I would suggest with the translation by Dr. T.B. Irving .
- It is always more advantageous to know the actual language of the Koran without relying on translation, but that's me. And that would require that you travel as well as learn other languages. :)
- Also, you could try to find translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.

| Translations of the Holy Qur'an Posted: 1/24/2008 7:15:22 PM | Traditionally Muslims have held that the Qur'an is only the Qur'an in its original language. Translations from the Arabic may be useful, but are considered "interpretations," not true translations (which is odd when you consider that most Muslims do not read Arabic, and know the Qur'an only in translation). So no, there is no English translation that is widely accepted as a translation in the Islamic world.
In university I read A.J. Arberry's The Koran Interpreted, which is probably the most highly regarded English translation and is relatively easy to find.
I own a copy of The Noble Qur'an: A New Rendering of Its Meaning in English by Abdalhaqq and Aisha Bewley. It's a beautiful translation, easier to read than the Arberry translation, but difficult to get your hands on if you live in North America (I bought mine when I lived in the UK).

| Translations of the Holy Qur'an Posted: 1/27/2008 2:02:06 PM | The most credible translation of Quran to this date is Tafseer ibn Khateer. The guy not only just translated Quran, but he has written the interpretaions for every chapter and has mentioned all the events and the sayings of prophet Muhammad associated with every chapter and verse.
I dont know, in what language he did his work, but I am sure his work is also available in English.
As a Muslim I can tell you this much, reading Quran's translation is not enough to understand Islam. You have to understand why each every verse was revealed under what context.
Therefore, you will have to be very careful.

| Translations of the Holy Qur'an Posted: 2/1/2008 12:17:24 PM | | I'm just wondering would it be useful to visit my local Mosque, and possibly see what translations (or interpretation as it seems to be called) they happen to use? | |

| Translations of the Holy Qur'an Posted: 2/1/2008 1:18:00 PM | | They won't use a "translation", they'll use one in it's original Arabic, and in original form they are all identical - no interpretations, no different versions, all the same | |
