Cooking disasters ~ Have you ever had any?

Even though I am sure most of us can cook a decent meal, none of us are immune from the occasional disaster.............

Years ago my ex decided he would cook breakfast ~ ummmmmm, not a brilliant idea as he decided we would have a sort of scrambled eggs with mushrooms and tomatoes (mashed up omelette) well as you know mushrooms leak brown fluid and tomatoes red saucey stuff, yeah right.............................brown, red and yellow coloured and the burnt bits so more brown stuff...................

Not wanting to hurt his feelings we had to eat it................yuck!

Have you or a partner ever had a cooking disaster, and did you or them eat it to save feelings being hurt..............?

I do ok now as ive got more experience im a caterer by trade so can knock loads of things up.
When i was younger and first started cooking i had this idea of making a stew loads of stuff went in there and in theory it should have been good, but not even my dog would eat it
I also made unbreakable biscuits, they could have broken your teeth.

i remember when i was only about 18 asking my friends over for sunday dinner..

my one friend wasn't very well and so i thought she could do with the break...

but i hadn't quite mastered a sunday dinner at that point and amongst other things the gravy ended up looking like cement!! they all fell about laughing and i disappeared to my bedroom to sob...

Probably loads.

A couple that spring to mind -
i did a meal with some sort of orange flavour conssomme type thing (it was a real recipe from a real recipe book) as a starter - it was like orange jelly.

I made a quiche and couldn't figure out why it didn't seem quite right - then looked round the kitchen and saw the eggs over on the counter, so I mixed them up, and poured them in the half cooked dish - stirred it round a bit, and shoved it back in the oven.

And a couple of years ago - I was doing Christmas lunch for about 12 people. I got the roast potatoes out of the oven, drizzled fat over them before putting them back in the oven. Unfortunately I forgot to put the oven gloves back on to pick the tray back up. So they went all over the floor - I scooped them all back up, put them back on the tray and put them back in the oven.

I seem to recall running something under the tap as well, but can't remember what it was.

Anybody want to come round for a meal???

Years ago I was living in a shared house, me and my mate John used to cook for each other all the time. One day he cooked a curry and it was looking and smelling great but he just couldn't leave it and added a tin of spinach, it truned a greeny brown sludgy colour, we couldn't eat it so went out for dinner instead. Left it on the cooker and it was gone when we got back, we shared with 3 guys who were not so fussy!

just remembered another one!

a year last september i had a private meet at my house and the following morning i was making a cooked breakfast for everyone...

i had put the pans on to heat and had gone into the living room to wait...

my son came in a few minutes later telling me that the kitchen was on fire...i laughed and told him to stop exaggerating and went to the kitchen to find it ON FIRE!! pmsl!

the frying pan was ablaze and about to set my cupboards off...without even thinking i grabbed the frying pan and quickly took it out the garden to carry on burning whilst i then did the damp teatowel routine....

I tried to cook one of the pasta sauce thingies once when i was drunk and left the fork in the pan and it melted. I also melted my mums kitchen sink plug with a hot frying pan.

I was young, one of my first ignorant attempts to cook. Thought shakeNbake would be easy but didn't realize that "fowl" in the grocery store was for stewing not regular recipes, the chicken came out like lovely looking ceramic chicken parts, neither fork nor knife could poke them. Had to order pizza, not a total loss.

^^^^ you should watch ainsley harriot on telly mate, pick up a lot of things on there!!

worst one of mine was before the food got onto a barbie, used some 'accellerant' to get coals going, came in to prepare salads etc, got neighbour banging on door telling me i had set 6foot of garden fence alight, and had i got a fire extinguisher!

oh and then there was the vegetable episode, and the ex's mother for sunday dinner, but thats a secret

I had a bit of a disaster not so long ago cooking for a lovely lady off of POF.
I decided to make us Spag bol, made my own sauce of course! To spice it up a bit more I had got hold of some cracking Chilli's, so I asked her if she liked it hot “the food that is” and she replied yes. By this time we where well through the 2nd bottle of Vino and I had lost count of how many Chillies I put in, a few too many as I later found out.
We sat down and started getting tore in, but almost immediately it hit me, my mouth was burning, being a guy I never let on of course! It was almost funny watching her face and feeling mine going red (With Embarrassment Probably) but neither of us mentioned anything until half way through, Then I noticed her pushing the sauce to the side so at this point I owned up and went for the water and ice. Then to make things worse I remembered about the garlic bread which by this time was cremated.
However we didn’t let that spoil the night, although it did spoil the morning worse than a Tindaloo does.

Lesson Learned, don’t cook and Drink!

had loads of mini disasters personally, but my lad had the best one ...

for a snack whilst I was out, he decided that he would have a meat and potato pie out of the freezer , glanced at the instructions and put it in the micro for 25 minutes ... result was a completely black pastry, and something rattling around on the inside that was originally the filling ............

took three days for the pong to dissipate ............

I've probably had many over the years, but I still laugh at my sister's, she phoned me when she first moved out of home and asked "how long do you leave sardines in the tin in boiling water........."

I have had quite a few, usually end up burning something...I tell them its not burned, its caramalised...

I rememebr once trying to follow a recipe for a dumpling type mixture that you rolled out and filled with Mushrooms, bacon, onions etc...

Wrapped in tin foil and placed in shallow boiling water to steam...Bloody thing grew so big I couldnt get it out of the pan ...And continued to grow, splitting the foil as it went.

Old family recipe it said, I expect it was cooked in a hole in the ground not a pan.

....................and when I went back hours later.............the pot had burnt dry and the eggs were near roasted ...............so much for non stick pans. had to throw eggs and pan away as there was no way I was ever going to get them out of there....

perhaps this is a good time to mention that if you burn a pot or pan, coca cola warmed gently over the heat is excellent at cleaning it!

I cant cook cakes they never turn out right, can do a mean curry, chilli, chinese, pasta dish, vegan roast, nut roast, amazing salads and dips but when it comes to deserts i aint got a clue. Sponges sink in the middle, pasty goes rock hard and any atempt at baked fruit gets burnt, i give up.
