"Minimum age" formulaPage 1 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
So years ago, I was told a formula for guys to figure out the youngest girl they are allowed to date. For some reason it stuck with me but over the years, on the rare occasions when I mentioned it to someone, no one else had ever heard of it...

Until about a month ago, when my friend's mom (while volunteering at an event) started talking to me about people being "too young for each other" and quoted the formula. So not it's making me wonder how many people have actually ever heard of this before (although I'm sure on a dating website, more people have).

So it goes...
[Guys age] / 2 + 7 = [Girl's Age]

So myself being 28, the youngest girl I should date, by this formula, would be 21. A 40 year old should not date younger than a 27 year old.

Realistic? Ridiculous?

Well, if my memory of junior high algebra serves me correctly:

[Guys age] / 2 + 7 = [Girl's Age]

[Guys age] / 2 = [Girl's Age] - 7

[Guys age] = 2 * [Girl's Age] - 7

See? I even showed my work. I'm assuming that order of operations applies, so I didn't bother with parenthesis.

Do I still get full marks?

Each there own I guess. I know I wouldn't want to use that formula because I sure don't want to date anyone in their late twenties... .

age is a state of mind I believe - not a formula. I have met some really immature 50 year old men and women and some bright mature 25 year olds. Also depends on where you are in your life? rather than the stated age.

So an 18 year olds minimum age is 16? Actually sounds about right. A 26 year old is 20. I dunno about that. When I was 26... anyway, moving right along.
At 53 (I know it's hard to believe, but there it is) my minimum age is 33. That seems to young for me. Way too young actually. I've never dated younger than 43. I can't imagine having much to say to a 33 year old -- other than, "so you loved the Osmonds when you were a teen? Cool."

It already does. That's probably why I usually date 10 years younger. Women my age can't keep up. They tire way too easily and want to call it a night just as I'm getting warmed up.

Disclaimer: The above is not intended to to slight any age group, nor suggest that anyone over 50 is "past it". It's a tongue in cheek "generally, but not always", "based on my personal experience and anecdotal only" statement.

It's really more about social acceptability rather than what age you "should" date. For someone who's 50, it's simply saying that the youngest they could go (if this formula is correct) is 32. So whether a person is mature or immature, or whether they are a viable candidate for you is not what it's about.

For a female, as MKD66 pointed out (and kudos to him for remembering his Jr High math), it becomes more of a "maximum age" formula and becomes:
([Girl's age] - 7) x 2 = [Guy's age]

Does this mean that there's an underlying understanding in here that it is socially acceptable for a man to date any older women or for a women to date any younger man? Who knows... :)

Ten years either way. That was my guide line. I could say something like, "although the 30 year old was a fun romp". lmao!

Ryn, I kind of like the 10 year rule myself. Now within that I have to agree with some of the previous posters...I can meet someone younger that acts too old, or vice versa. Personality is a big part of it. My ex was 12 years older than me....since then I 've been dating men younger than me. Go figure!

Age is a thing of the mind. I was speaking with a man who was 10 years older than myself, and he had loads of energy. Then there are some 40- somethings who just like to sit infront of the tv. So, I agree, it is mind thing.

(age 36)That would make my maximum age 58 eeewwww my dad is 57 , I used to state in my profile that if you were closer to my dad's age it wasn't going to happen.

Younger than me even by a year has never worked for me. A least my age up to 5-6 years older was my limit. But a lot of other things factored into that, he had to be done with having kids.....cause I'm done, one woman has to and needs to be enough for him (around here hahahah that's a rare find) read RARE not ALL

Demention... All I can say is... Eeeeeek! No that doesn't work!

Me = Girl = Age 50
Subtract 7 = 43
Times 2 = 86

Uh... nope, not going there!

I think the translation into the "girl" formual is all wonked. Maybe it's the same formula for minimum age and no conversion to maximum age for a woman.

I'm trying to be a bit more open minded about age-I used to say Id never date a younger man...but as I get older, they seem...yummier? LOL

Actually, to me its more important that we are at the same stage in life, IE kids are older, or none at all, and they cant want anymore-cause Im done with that too.

Same level of physical activities, lifestyle, intellect, moral beliefs, and treatment toward others etc are more important than age these days to me.

But no one under 30. I like what happened to me as I went thru my thirties, and would prefer a man that has at least entered that stage. It's an important age/stage to go through, in my opinion.
