"Pink" Girl Power
Posted: 2/6/2008 10:50:05 PM
Have you noticed how the manufacturers of "man" things have at last cottoned on to the buying power of girls.

But why do they think that making nearly everything in pink is a good idea......

I have seen pink gardening tools, (I have a set of these) and the other day saw a pink car tool set......

Have the manufacturers hit on another money making scheme "pink girl power"?

And do you know anyone who has, or do you have any "pink tools/things"?

Does this mean manufacturers think women need to feel comfortable doing man jobs and have made these "pink things" so women can feel more confident using "their" own power tools?

Views awaited.......................

Pink business shirts to wear with a dark suit... ladies love them!

I've seen all sorts of pink things, worked with a girl who had about every fricken pink accessory in the world... very girly.

I'm really not a lover of pink. I particularly hate manufactured pinks, Ie the pink on a flower is pretty, anywhere else... nah! I avoid it like the plague.

Having said that, my baby sister is a carpenter and she has a set of pink flowery tools that my Mum bought her and she loves pink. (No accounting for taste). I still love her though lol.

Like Bootie, I am not a very 'pink' sort of person. And I already have a pretty extensive tool kit, none of which is pink! I wonder, do they make pink drills/sanders etc?
As for pink gardening tools..... they seem like quite a good idea to me. I've never understood why manufacturers of these things make them green - so that every time you put them down they merge into the lawn/flower bed/shrub! Pink would be MUCH easier to find.

I think that the whole idea of pink tools is a reaction to the fact that so many women now use these traditionally male items, and that its a fashion which will quite quickly pass. Mind you, there's no reason for all sorts of things cant be made in varying colours to suit tastes, I suppose.

There is nothing in this world that would make me NOT buy something as much as if it came in pink!

Cant stand the colour.... its just TOO girly!

like Bootie, I agree that the best place for this colour is on the things it was intended for, such as flowers, fruit, birds and animals etc..... but ewww.. i hate it otherwise. I mean... PINK cars for heavens sake! Now thats just taking it too far! lol

You wont find anything pink in my house, not even a lipstick!

Give me a lovely shade of green anyday.... (not lipstick though... he he he)

At the stables where i volunteer, one of the horse owners has bought a pink wheel barrow, at first i assumed it was down to her being young and girlie, now i see the method in her madness purchase, she can be guaranteed that each time she arrives to muck out, her barrow will always be free, no one else wants to walk round the yard wheeling a pink wheel barrow
Im not a fan of items coloured pink but the singer Pink, well shes great!

I never used to be a very "pink" kinda person, but the last year or so I've really started to like it.

Whether it's the effect of the tickled pink campaign, or the fact that I'm rebelling against living in a house with teenage boys, or maybe it's the menopause but I'm going girly. I've got a pink laptop and a pair of pink DMs. I've even got girly underwear

In terms of making items in various colours - stuff that is relatively inexpensive and a short life then it makes perfect sense to make it in various colours, but items that will cost a couple of hundred pounds, then unless market research has shown a huge demand for it then no manufacturer in their right mind will make it in a variety of colours other than as a limited special edition run.

I have a pink rotary cutter as well. But I do have the other, more common colour of yellow too.

Load of rubbish - if you wanted decent solid tools there is no way you'd go for ones that look like toys.

All the one I have seen do look rather plastic like and I shouldn't think they will last long.

If you use power tools anyway I'm sure you'd go for quality, but then again I suppose there are many fickle women out there and wouldn't notice the difference.
So yes just another scam to get rid of cheap and nasty tools.

Mind you it'd save them getting "borrowed" my men that have no respect for a womans posessions

Hmmm... my sister is a qualified carpenter and has got some of these pink pretty (if you like pink) tools. I have to say they are solid and not a bit of platic in sight. My Mum paid a lot of money for them too. I don't see how liking pink makes you fickle either?

Where is the evidence that they are cheap and nasty? Although they are not my cup of tea, I don't think we can assume that they are all being thrown together with substandard materials for women that are incapable of knowing good from bad?

All the ones I have inspected even the ones that have other patterns on are cheap - £9.99 and did feel awfuly plasticy and rubbish. They are even in the Pound Shops for goodness sake.
That's enough evidence for me I have seen them with my own eyes, sorry if you wanted a statisitcal report but we will have to wait and see how long they last.

So which make are your sister's tools? No plastic in sight? - not even on the lead and connections?

Bosh I found to be good and my mum always uses those for their belt sanders (she's had the same one for 18 years now at least, which is green)
My Grandad is a fully qualifed and old school trained artisic carpenter (that means no MDF - real wood) and he uses proper hand tools.

I did not say that just because you like pink you are fickle - do not twist my words to give your replies substance.
Theoreticaly it shouldn't matter what colour tools are if they are made with the same processes and materials, but the ones I have seenobviously haven't and are bloody awfull

Ooo I lurve pink things. I've turned from quite tomboyish to being a right girl over the last year or so.
I own many pink things including the tool sets. Funny how since I got a pink tool set, my son doesn't do a disappearing act with them.

Does this mean manufacturers think women need to feel comfortable doing man jobs and have made these "pink things" so women can feel more confident using "their" own power tools?

I see very little as being a man job. I'm more than capable of doing jobs no matter what colour the item. Although I've fooked up many a time, I'm confident. Practice makes perfect and all that.
Now they just luck prettier and co-ordinate well with the rest of my pink collections.

I think that kind of says it. Anyone who is shopping in the pound shop is not looking for quality tools and certainly won't find them. I'm sure they have them in the more traditional colours in there at the same crap quality.

So which make are your sister's tools? No plastic in sight? - not even on the lead and connections?

I'll be honest with you, they are not power tools, they are hand held tools, like a small hammer etc, It's solid metal that has been painted directly on to. It's actually really heavy. I can't remember what the other items were as I was too busy raising my eyebrows at them.

I did not say that just because you like pink you are fickle - do not twist my words to give your replies substance.

I wasn't trying to twist your words at all. That is the way I interpreted what you said.

You actually said:
If you use power tools anyway I'm sure you'd go for quality, but then again I suppose there are many fickle women out there and wouldn't notice the difference.

You were referring to women buying pink tools at the time instead of the more traditional ones.

Lets face it, we are all more likely to buy something we are attracted to. If the world was going 'red' mad and not 'pink' mad I'd probably be there buying it with all the rest. I actually saw a broom with red roses all over it and was tempted for a second. Yes there is going to be alot of crap out there purely to get on the 'pink trend' but... it doesn't mean it's all rubbish and it isn't possible to find decent quality items that you enjoy looking at as well as using.

Nothing fickle in liking the way something looks. Besides, I thought fickle meant that you chopped and changed what you liked like the wind? In today, out tomorrow?

Being a lady who lives on her own i have to admit that all my tools are pink lol, even got a pink drill......makes it easy then when my brother asks to borrow something he sees the colour and says no thanks not using that lol....but on other hand my brother also refuses to do jobs for me with them lol...

I must admit i do feel more comfortable using my own "Pink" tools rather than the normal guy colour......

Nothing wrong with Pink Girl Power lol......

Yes fickle - oh I buy that cos I like the colour pink today!

I still can't find any pink unpowered carpenters tools nor can I find any decent make of pink power tools.

So does the pink tools of your sisters not have handles or grippers on them?

I don't have any pink tools but my kitchen is pink, from the pink kettle, pink drawers, pink lights, pink glass jar with utensils in, pink t-towels, pink, spoon rest by the cooker, pink clock, pink salt & pepper grinders, even the kittens food mat is pink!
One wall is pink & the others are white.

The rest of my house is white but went through a girly phase with the kitchen!
