| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 10:31:11 PM | OK I was dating a guy and I had heard him use racist stereotypes before ...I had always stopped him and told him clearly I cant deal with that or be around it. He would apologize and stop for a while.
(Basically he really believes east indians are bad at business, asians are bad drivers, black women are loud etc etc etc.)
Well recently we were arguing about abortion... he is anti abortion as is his entire family. His mom went to jail for protesting yrs ago when he was just a teen. He says "the one thing that bothered me most about her getting arrested is she is protesting in public places and gets arrested while some sand n*gg*r protests shit where ever he wants and doesnt get into trouble."
Now I dont know what he was talking about because I think I went spontaneously deaf or something...i was just so shocked that he said something so vile.
I'm so confused... (I am half black BTW) So how could he use language like that and not have a problem with blacks? He seems mad at me for calling him on it....hunh? Does anyone really believe someone could talk like that and not be a racist ass? How does he justify being with me? Can we even be friends?
what are your thoughts on it?

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 10:39:31 PM | Sometimes when people get mad they let things like that slip.
My friends make racial comments all the time with one another...none of us are racists... we joke about it(I know it sounds bad) but we would never use it in a derogative way at another person

Looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, OP. Imagine your relationship in a few years when you do something he takes exception to, "ya dumbass jigaboo". If you can imagine those words coming out of his mouth ( & I bet you can), you are in the wrong place.
Get out, now. He's ignorant, boorish, racist, and I would put money today on him becoming domineering and controlling, and using your heritage against you in the near future.

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 10:47:08 PM | I would/could never be in a relationship with a person whose basic values are so different than mine. I am very open about number of things, but being racist is a dealbreaker to me. I don't want people like that in my circle of friends, even acquaitances... So, I certainly would not want to date them.
It's not like this is a disagreement over 2-ply vs. 3-ply toilet paper.

His mom sounds like an animal. LOL

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 10:50:32 PM | EXCUSEEEEEEEEEEE ME??????????
sometimes things just slip???.... yes.. I agree that is true...but RACIAL Slurs just don't slip unless it is part of your vocabulary or your way of thinking.
and yes... I am a woman of colour. I was married to a Caucasian man for 24 + years.
I don't tolerate that kind of crap from anyone about any race. I stand my ground and I speak up.
As for if you can still be friends....well that is your call. Does it offend you? Will he stop the name calling?
Like I said to a co-worker years ago when she told us that HE hit her and HE was doing Cocaine... I asked her if it mattered to her?.. Would you ask him to stop?...If it didn't mean anything to her, if she did not mind the hitting and the drugs...then carry on.

I honestly think non-racist people do not really need to convince others of that fact. It would be known by their actions and the way they speak to... and about others. I also believe there is an a$$hole in every crowd.

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 11:00:50 PM | | As far as I am concerned there is no excuse for racist. I suspect he is a product of his rasing. How old is he? I am with him though on Pro Life! We should learn from little children they never see skin pigment just other kids! Predjudice is learned from adults it is not natural. I am not saying he is a bad guy but perhaps just needs to learn different. Good Luck. | |

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 11:05:29 PM | Last week I ended talking with someone on pof for that reason. He was a racists. Keep saying he wasn't, "I have friends at work that are black". But during out last conversation he used the words "spook" "ni**ers". Even though I told him my sister in law is black and my sons girlfriend is half black he still made these disgusting comments to me.
People that make these comments are racists period. I have zero tolerance for them.

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 11:09:30 PM | Hmm.... not sure. I'm biracial as well, and I have a circle of friends from all races.... and we make racial jokes against each other all the time! I don't think anyone takes it seriously, though.
Regarding the question of whether or not you can be friends with a racist... that's also a good question. If the answer is no, though, it might bring up a whole host of questions about other friendships. I have some friends who have very "bigoted" ideas about political conservatives or people who belong to my religion. Racism isn't the only evil in the world. Do some digging and you'll find that bigotry or prejudice exists in the minds of almost everyone to some degree or another.

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/12/2008 11:11:47 PM | You know there was a man who was being criticized because he had a tendency to socialize with with people of questionable character. His response? Well he basically asked how he could be expected to have a positive influence if he wasn't allowed to hang around people who needed a positive influence.
I have a friend much like yours. All I can say is, if you're going to be a positive influence, you can't let him get away with it, and you can't be nice about it. Make it a rule; when you're calling him out on it never say the words "sorry" or please. For instance don't say
Sorry, I don't appreciate your racist remarks. Please don't use them around me."
Take out the sorry, and the please and you've got the perfect response.

My friends make racial comments all the time with one another...none of us are racists... we joke about it(I know it sounds bad) but we would never use it in a derogative way at another person {/quote] One of the silliest things that I have read here... and I have read some silliness. Brother, just because you are mad, does not give you the right to let hurtful comments slip. What's next 'oops, my fist slipped! I was mad, so it's okay!' You gat mad and then you don't care so you say what you really think, damn the consquences! Frankly, as a black guy, I would have more respect for you if you would use the terms that you use around your friends around the people that you malign. At least you would be man enough and honest enough to show what you really think and who you really are in front of them instead of grinning in their faces. just cuz we use the slurs dosent mean we hate any one particular it just means why should blacks get away with stuff every one else cant i think the one who is racist is you No one cares if you hate minorities or not. Neither you nor I are that important. The point is that as a minority, we still have to fight for respect and against racist atitudes. Blacks do not get away with anything that others don't. If what you mean is the act of blacks calling each other derogatory names in songs, well most black adults are outraged by that. It is ignorant. You don't hear old black ladies refering to each other that way!! Just the stupid music, which influences the youth. You have no idea what you are talking about. It is wrong no matter who does it.

OP: My thoughts are: why would you want to date or be friends with someone like that?
As an unimportant aside, the "sand ni**er" slur is used towards those of middle eastern descent, not black people.

Blacks do not get away with anything that others don't.
I'm going to respectfully disagree. The Wayan brothers do a movie in which they change the color of their skin and then parody a blonde female stereotype, (White Chicks) and no one says a word, and they get a hit movie. In spite of the fact that as a whole it wasn't even a good movie. Some local college students do a skit that parodies the movie "Cool Runnings" and the whole state gets in an uproar and cries racist because they used makeup to darken their skin to more closely resemble the Jamaican characters in the movie.
A group of black students start a brawl in Decatur Illinois violent enough that it makes national news, and Jesse Jackson starts marching because expelling them from school was too harsh a punishment.
A white female commentator makes a small error in judgement when asked about what a young golfer might do to respond to Tiger Woods' dominance by using the word lynch, and Al Sharpton is calling for the loss of her job.
BET, Miss Black America, United Negro College Fund. Try to do any of these in reverse, and they would be immediately villified.
And when my Dad walked in to a cola bottling plant after coming home from Korea, to apply for a job and was told by the foreman that they couldn't hire him because they had set aside the jobs for black applicants? Sorry , but that would never happen the other way around.
Sorry, but as a white man who is walking down this path of racial relations, I know that it's a reality. I'm going to have more egg shells to walk on. (or not).

| a racist slur from someone your dating....what do you do? Posted: 2/13/2008 12:18:22 AM | Thank you guys so much for your responses...I wasn't so much looking for strangers on the internet to tell me how to behave....I simply was curious at what you guys thought of it. I was overwhelmed immediately by the questions raised in my head...so I thought I would see what your gut instincts were.
I never apologize for being offended by ignorance. I do see controlling behaviors and total lack of respect already. I accept that my friends have faults...but I have to set lines on what is unacceptable if i want my children to do that for themselves. I don't believe people just say stupid things or they slip out. I know that black/fat/short/female/whatever people use derogatory terms because it takes the sting out of the word if you learn to use it...I don't use it...to me its low class...that is just me though. I believe in this day you have to work at being ignorant. Its not natural and we are exposed to so much. There is just no excuse anymore.
I just wanted to say that...thank you for your responses...its great to see people discussing more than sex, bad boyfriends and why women only like bad guys on here.

People who have deep seeded ill feelings for people outside of their "tribe" will defend their beliefs to the point of chivalry.
Goes back to the cave man days.......where they would stone others outside their "tribe" out of ignorance and fear. SOOOOOOO dump the knuckle dragger that is stuck in the caveman (ARGGG) days and find someone a little more educated.

Brother. are you joking?? I will POLITELY respond to each of your comments in order.
The Wayans brothers made a movie where they change their skin colour. There have been several movies where the plot line was a white guy would disguise himself a s a black man. 'Soul man' starring Thomas C Howell being the biggest box office hit. The problem with 'using makeup to darken their skin' was a black face parody. Google 'blackface' if you are unfamiliar with it. They are two different subjucts. No one had a problem with Soul Man or the many others.
A group of Students In Decatur start a brawl and Jessie Jackson shows up... Dude so what? Jessie Jackson is not the national spokes person of black people. Neither is Rev, Farrkahn or Al Sharpton. They are publicity people. They lend their name to issues, some good, some bad. So if a black guy publicly protests something then it was okay?? So I should then believe when the freaks from the Westboro church protest at a veterans funeral that that is the national stance of white people?? Nonsense. Some jerks started a brawl. Jessie Jackson decided to steal some publicity. That's all.
Same thing with the Tiger Woods statement and Al Sharpton.
BET, Miss Black America and The United Negro College Fund.
Dude, thirty years ago ALL TELEVISION WAS WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION. Ther was no television shows directed at black cultur period fifteen years ago.So they now have a station that plays bad rap videos. Big deal. How is it any different than The Country Music station (CMT). It is the same thing but for white folks. You have a point that I agree with on the Miss Black America. We have had several Black Miss Americas so the need is over. That said not long ago Miss America was Miss White America. Blacks were not allowed to compete. Not too long ago ALL SCHOLARSHIPS IN AMERICA WERE WHITE SCHOLARSHIPS. In the sixties (Forty short years ago) blacks could not simply go to school or college. White people fought against the idea so hard that the National guard had to be called out just to escort blaks onto the campuses and to and from class everyday. It was legal to not accept black people into a college simply due to their race. Forget scholarships. The sixties sound so far away but I am 36 years old. My generation is the first generation of blacks in America to freely be able to go to school where ever they were smart enough and wealthy enough to go. We are the first to be able to go to any college. The problem was money. Society was not bending overto help, thus the UNited Negro College Fund was created.
Your Dad walked into A cola bottling plant and was turned down for a job due to affirmative action...
Hmmmm... Do I have to explain? Okay. In your dads day the vast majority of blacks had that same experience trying to get a job, home, seat on the bus, table in a restaurant, services in any form... Racism is wrong. I am sorry that your father was denied a job. Affirmative action was put into place because although it was still illegal to discriminate against a black person, they still could not get jobs, homes or a fair shake in society. So Affirmative action was instituted. Today I have big problems with Affirmative action, but that was not amn expample of blacks getting away with any thing. I know that this is a long post. Thanks for reading it. Look, just because their are a few singular instances of an issue on BOTH sides of the field, (i.e.Decatur-Jena6) does not make one wrong and the other right.
