| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 9:26:18 AM | Knock us down, we'll get back up again. (Apparently the only way Flames fans can keep their "thread count" higher than that of Oiler threads is by having the Oiler threads deleted.)
So six months after the Penner deal, Brian Burke is still whining. Boo hoo. I will say one thing about his latest tirade – he is correct in crediting Kevin Lowe with being the one responsible for the effective cancellation of "second" contracts in the NHL. Players approaching restricted free agency are now getting $6M+/year contracts, left, right and centre. Phaneuf, Ovechkin, Lundquist and the likes had better all have KL on their Christmas card lists. They have him to thank for their multi-million-dollar deals. Almost ironic that the guy who started the whole thing can't seem to attract any UFAs to his team. Even more ironic is that a GM from one of the franchises so in need of a salary cap system could be held accountable for the escalating salaries (did I say escalating? Skyrocketing would be more appropriate).
This will force even more strategic planning on the part of NHL GMs. Now they have to find the perfect balance - trying to form a team where your top line gets half the team salary (ie the Calgary Flames) and still have enough talent on your second, third and fourth lines.

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 10:19:14 AM | | Just curious as to how you could consider this thread reduntant? It's the only Oilers thread on this site. | |
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 10:31:50 AM | | This whole cap fiasco will have to level out somewhere though - you can't field a team at that rate and still have enough players. The whole point of the cap is to keep things in check. When they're all in cap trouble and without enough players to keep their team going, then what? Look at Tampa - three players take up a huge majority of their cap room. You can't keep going like that. It's the nice thing about the cap though - it's an equalizer. Tampa's going to have to deal one of their big three sooner rather than later just to survive. | |
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 10:32:36 AM | Must be Flames fans lol
GO OILERS GO | |
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 12:46:05 PM | Tampa is a perfect example. They believed that they were sewing up their core by signing Richards, St. Louis and Lecavalier. Sound familiar, Flames fans? Granted at least Calgary spent it on offence, defence and goaltending, but still, what good is Iginla going to be if he has to play with plumbers all year?
And what do they do with their second, third and fourth lines?

Almost ironic that the guy who started the whole thing can't seem to attract any UFAs to his team. Hopefully this will change with Katz owning the team.
It was a bold move on KLowe's part. $4.25 M for Penner, how could he have said NO! Burke needs to take a deep breath, pop some nitro tablets, and calm down about it though. Business is business after all.
"I don't talk to him so it would be hard to make a deal," Burke said. "I guess our right-hand men could make a deal. But no, I have no intention to speak to him so it would be real hard to make a deal. I'm not sure how you would do that."

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 1:09:08 PM | Damn.... I was looking for the oilers thread too!
What's the point of deleting it? Seriously...
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 1:27:58 PM | Ours is not to reason why... so let's keep this a pro Oilers thread and a no Flame(r)s zone. There will be no bashing of the Flames in this thread, only cheering when we win. All Oilers, all the time! | |
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 1:51:10 PM | | ^^ That's the sad thing though. The banter between the fans keeps the spirit alive. I don't see any reason why Flames fans can't post in here, they have opinions too, and it is a public forum after all. However, I know that I for one, will be utilizing the "DELETE POST" option when inane or attacking posts appear. | |
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 3:15:38 PM | Sorry, OP. I'm gonna hijack your thread for a very brief moment..........
Any dateless people looking for a place to watch the Oilers' game tonight?
Bring your single friends and come down to Hudson's downtown. Puck drop 8:30 but getting there early is highly recommended.
I'm sorry if I'm breaking any forum rules by posting this message in this thread....DON'T SHOOT! I promise I won't do it again.
What better way to spend Valentine's Day than a romantic dinner with Penner and Gagner?

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 4:00:01 PM | What made me laugh about Burke was how he went on complaining about how KL could make such a "grossly inflated salary for a player". This from the same guy who, one week earlier, signed Todd Bertuzzi to a $4M per year contract. Todd Bertuzzi, he of the chronic back spasms Todd Bertuzzi, who was coming off a 1-goal season with Florida, before being dealt at the trade deadline. (Yes, he did only play 8 games...due to his back problems - all the more reason NOT to sign him to such a "grossly inflated salary") Todd Bertuzzi, who scored all of 3 goals in the playoffs - in 17 games with the Wings last year. Todd Bertuzzi - who has nine career playoff goals in 40 games and hasn't had a "point-per-game" regular season in going on 6 years. (Yes, he did only play 8 games...due to his back problems - all the more reason NOT to sign him to such a "grossly inflated salary")
Hmmm Burkey... seems to me KL isn't the only one guilty of over-paying.
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 6:47:29 PM | EEP!! This game has me worried... (that tends to be a good sign for the Oil, as past posts would indicate) OH WAIT, past DELETED posts, ahem ... But hopefully my "OH DEAR GOD we're gonna lose" feeling, keeps on the same streak it has most of the season.
LOL! | |
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 6:53:00 PM | God bless you, Pundit! Lol! I was just about to start another Oiler thread when I found this. We shall overcome...

Todd Bertuzzi, he who spread his malignant cancer throughout the lymph nodes of the Canucklehead organization. Todd Bertuzzi, he who graced us with his enlightened and often media-friendly tidbits, like "It is what it is".
Anyway, Burke is a big pudgy crybaby that needs to change his diapers. I'm sick of hearing him cry. Now quick, someone get him some Huggies and a Wet One!
|
| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 7:10:11 PM | ^^ Darn the only "wet one" I have around here is a leather glove, but it's full of ice, not so much water.
Will that do? | |

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 7:13:25 PM | "Todd Bertuzzi, he who graced us with his enlightened and often media-friendly tidbits, like "It is what it is"."
Or his other favourite..."I don't play for the fans. I play for my teammates." That's nice. Who pays your frikkin contract? THAT quote is as bad as Jason Arnott's infamous "I just wasn't into it tonight" slip

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 8:00:04 PM |
And what do they do with their second, third and fourth lines?
How about making players play for their money. If all contracts were for only 1 year then the players would play their arses off because face it they play great in the last year of their contract. Make them work for it. Then instead of making millions for a average of playing 30-35 % of the game make them play at least 50-55%. Then you would not need 23 players but maybe only 18-20. That would save the owners some money and they could then give that to their best player. With so many teams these days there are not enough super stars to have on each team.
Lots of contracts these days have bonuses for goals and assists. That creates a guy hogging the puck and trying to score from a bad angle instead of passing it for a assist. Make it just a simple bonus for points and then you would see nice passing and scoring. Just look at the old European hockey. The passing skills were amazing, it was like watching the magic. Anyways i'd better zip up and give you all a break lol just my .28 cents worth

But one year is not enough to build a decent team, think about it. How on EARTH can you build any kind of team on a year after year basis?
And... don't forget, EDMONTON is NOT where players want to go, nowadays.

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 10:11:31 PM | Yeeaaaaahhhhh baby!! Another win! I was a little worried about this game, especially after the Sharks completely outplayed the Flames the other night and lost in overtime. I admire the dedication of this Oilers team and how they decided to practice their penalty kill during the game instead of during practice.
Anyway, our penalty kill was fantastic, especially on the 5 on 3. Loved how Garon cleared the puck himself and how the Sharks couldn't penetrate our zone for several attempts.
THAT quote is as bad as Jason Arnott's infamous "I just wasn't into it tonight" slip Now THAT'S funny! lol I must have missed that interview. I guess Arnott is as media savvy as Big Bert.
Darn the only "wet one" I have around here is a leather glove, but it's full of ice, not so much water.
Will that do? He might like that. What was I thinking anyway? I used the singular of Wet One when we all know that you'd need the entire canister of wipes to clean Burkies ample arse.

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/14/2008 10:23:48 PM | Fox I love it when you think they're going to lose! I think you have reverse karma or something! I think Brodziak needed Glencross to come play with him to figure out how to score. I was reading today though how Brodziak was the top goal scorer on his farm team. So is our darling Robbie Schremp. If Brodziak comes up with that kind of record to the fourth line, I sure hope the same fate doesn't await Schremp. I can't wait until he comes to play with the big boys. For whatever reason, I think he's going to be something special. | |

Fox I love it when you think they're going to lose! I think you have reverse karma or something! I told her before that she needs to harness that power Another good night for the Oilers though it was still scoreless when I dozed off in the 1st intermission and missed everything Too bad the Canucks scrounged an extra point though. Win the next couple games and it could start getting interesting again. Any thoughts about the impending trade deadline and what it might mean to the Oilers.

| Go Oilers Go Posted: 2/15/2008 6:32:49 AM | Another win and a hangover to go with it! | |

Still miss the guy, but I think I'm finally over it I can't quite say the same but I've dealt with it. I still get choked thinking about it though On a brighter note for Oiler fans anyhoo the boys are getting close enough to see the shadows of the teams they're chasing
