| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 2:46:33 PM | My parents grew up in the post ww2 era where nothing was wasted. I mean they were starving and my step mom told me stories of eating bark and shoe leather or whatever was around in order to stay alive. Granted in today's society we do not need to resort to such drastic measures but at the same time i feel bad for just chucking it down the drain with the hot water.
Can this be used for something other than powering an auto mobile? Can i use this in the kitchen somehow? It would be a shame to chuck it.
I like the salt in it. Sometimes i catch myself dipping a piece of bread in it and then get told off by friends for doing it at which point i recite the ww2 story and they just go oh.

Save it and mix it with oil when roasting potatoes to accompany roast pork.
Brown chicken cubes in it for a tastier chicken casserole. But don't use a salty stock cube for the "gravy"!
Mix with oil when making a ham omelette - or if you have a good omelette pan that doesn't stick, just use the bacon fat.
But be wary of bacon with too much added water - you haven't got fat, you have a little fat in a lot of brine!

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 3:21:07 PM | Mmmmmmm... Bacon fat...... I grew up on a pig farm..... my father used to make "bacon toast" all the time... my new sis-in-laws all think it's disgusting.
Heat up bacon fat in a pan Throw in nice thick bread into pan to fry until golden brown Flip, repeat.
Nice thick french bread soaks up a lot of the bacon fat for tasty artery-clogging goodness! Mmmmmmmmmmm......
Tastes even better while camping over a fire!

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 3:40:46 PM | | Honey, you make gravy for good ole Southern gravy biscuits with it, for Heaven's sake! First you make a roux using some of it in a skillet on medium heat and s-l-o-w-l-y adding a bit more and a bit more flour, stirring it with a fork the whole time. When it starts getting thick s-l-o-w-l-y, again, start adding milk and stirring it in with the fork so it blends and your mixture doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. You want to wind up with more flour and much more milk than you do bacon grease. Add black pepper to taste. If you do it right your wrist will get tired stirring and you'll probably get tired watching it, but in the end it will be well worth it. I RARELY ever make it, cause it's so good and so fattening, usually just making it when I have company, maybe a couple of times a year. But before you start the gravy go ahead and have your good old cat-heat biscuits made. You don't want to be distracted when you're making your gravy. Especially in the early stage. | |

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 3:44:58 PM | I meant to say (type, tee-hee!) CAT-HEAD biscuits, not cat-heat. They're called cat-head biscuits because you shape 'em with your hand instead of rolling them out with a rolling pin and they look about like a cat's head when they're done, the way they rise.
Another good use is to cover your animal's kibble. Ooh, they LOVE it!

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 3:55:01 PM | Do you ever make pork ribs with kraut? Brown the ribs in some bacon grease before adding the kraut to the pot or pan. Also, when pouring it down the drain, run COLD water, it beads it up so it gets down the drain. With hot water, it will adhere to the sides of the pipes as it slithers down. Then it hardens on the pipes. With the cold water, it hardens right away into the balls and keeps on going! | |

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 4:53:42 PM | If you intend on using it please refrigerate it or better yet freeze it. If it goes rancid it is horrible and will make everyone sick.
I would use it to saute potatoes or perogies. I am not big on reusing lard.

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 5:24:15 PM | | I like the idea of giving it to the birds. As for myself, I would never eat that stuff anymore. I like pigs and would never eat one any more. Plus, the way they are raised on factory farms is horrendous...and people eat them? Check out rense.com and read the article about pig-factory workers getting very sick on pig brain fumes. I would say today, that if you insist on eating meat, at least go into the woods and make a nice clean kill or a hog or deer...and then eat it all and waste none, as the Indians did. | |

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 5:43:20 PM | ^^^^ Just like any other type of farm, meat or otherwise. My family never got sick working there... and why would they be breathing in brain fumes???
I could never be muslim.... love pork too much! haha

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 6:06:01 PM | Use in in biscuits, waffles, pancakes. Fry eggs in it, and hash browns. In a pinch, I've used it in cookies. Don't think I've ever tried it in cakes, but might work in a spice cake or a fruit cake. I always run out. I'm out now, need to buy some more bacon, just so I can get some more bacon grease, lol!

Edit: factory farming is dreadful, but small farmers can and do raise pigs. Since I don't believe in space alien plots, I can't really use rense.com as a source for *anything* --
Edit II: Kathy, best don't believe everything your doctor tells you (they don't have to take a nutrition class to become doctors, BTW). Over the past five years, on Atkins, and my version is VERY pork/bacon heavy, my cholesterol has dropped from 245 to 183. Use your *own* brain.

| What can i do with Bacon fat? Posted: 2/14/2008 6:12:08 PM | | Bacon fat, or as we always called it, bacon grease, is used to season fresh green beans. Add about a tablespoon of bacon grease, more or less depending on how big a mess of beans you have, when you put them on to cook. That's how all the women in my family cooked beans, until I came along and left it out and everybody liked them better without the bacon grease. | |

I am doing much the same thing. I eat at least a pound of meat each day and much of that is bacon. My cholesterol is 139. When I was eating pasta, salads, and all of the other proper foods my cholesterol was over 260.

^^ (throws charts, power point slides and empirical evidence over shoulders) Well, so much for my new health promotion strategy ...
Each to their own - but bacon fat? Damn, I'll definitely pass on that one.
Dunno ... let it solidify and make a candle out of it? The aroma of freshly burning bacon fat filling your house or apartment ... what could be more therapeutic than that?
