| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/16/2008 10:23:22 AM | We were talking about that last night. I guess Spring is in the air on the Island!
I know a few people in the Victoria area who are interested. Do you care about the age range?

Ummmm, are there not camping rules were the clock does NOT take effect when sleeping under the sky and drinking is allowed as long as you are awake!!!
Off topic a bit, but I do have a question for the islanders or anyone in the know. Anyone know how long it would take to drive from Sooke to Tofino???? And what type of roads and type of drive is it????? Just asking for the daughter and a couple of friends who are debating about a March break trip with a camper.
|
| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/17/2008 9:47:20 AM | Sooke to Tofino.....according to google maps....327 km – about 4 hours 51 mins...

Hwy. 4 has several very narrow spots and very sharp corners. 30km/hr corners, and that's in a car. Meeting a semi is NOT fun!
Long Beach is a beautiful place...

I am a party pooper.
I never understood why a 'good time' is always associated with excessive drinking and excessively loud music.
This is something I can do at home, but I guess I would have to clean up the mess.

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/17/2008 11:12:49 AM | There have been awesome camping POF trips in the past and I look forward to many more. The ones I have been to have all been family friendly and the kids of all ages had a blast as well as the adults. Walts don't let Hwy 4 scare ya! It isn't nearly as bad as it used to be 20 years ago when it was still a mere goat trail. It is paved all the way ( typical BC paving though,... LOTS of potholes and SOFT shoulders in the slow section and often construction going on) There is a stretch that is pretty curvy but for the most part unless you get stuck behind an RV or Semi you can travel at a pretty fair speed (80). DO pay attention to the speeds on the corners as it is one road that REALLY means it when they say 30km!! 4 hours would be plenty of time. WELL worth the drive and remember IF you park at Long Beach you have to PAY! | |

IF you park at Long Beach you have to PAY! I don't think the permit dispensers are installed yet for the summer season, but here is a link to the fees on the Park website: http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/bc/pacificrim/visit/tarifs_fees_E.asp?Park=21

I don't think the permit dispensers are installed yet for the summer season
I wasn't aware that they removed them over the winters???? It has been pay parking in the parks on this island for years now.
|

I wasn't aware that they removed them over the winters???? They have been doing that for a couple of years anyway, since the inception of this fee program. I used to just get the annual pass, so I never really paid that much attention to the dispensers other than to notice they were not there in the winter......so I don't know how anyone WOULD pay. More people are coming now in the winters, so maybe this will change......I'll get the skinny this weekend.
I always thought that a group outing to Horne Lake Provincial Park would be cool if anyone was interested in some tame spelunking. It's pretty central on the Island so people could come from North and South. The caves are pretty cool, but I'd prefer drier weather for that. They also have these funky teepee-like structures you can rent.....here's a link: http://www.hornelake.com/home.htm

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/18/2008 1:01:38 PM | ^^^ great idea for t hose who lack tents Delores! We/POF have camped at Whiskey Creek and that was a good one. Not as much to do except socialize without a short drive ( Cameron Lake or Cathedral grove but we all had a blast). For those looking for a bigger trip Powell River has great spots too. Keep in mind that Horne Lake has NO power or showers for those who MUST have them. | |
|
| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/18/2008 5:11:38 PM | ^^^ ummm I can usually be pursuaded to bring the coffee and donuts to whiskey creek if that was a venue again...that was a beautiful area showers, firewood, even for a non camper like me...but I just might be pursuaded if its before mid Jun... after that I am pretty much occupied all summer.... Jen let me know if there is camping.... thanks... smilessss | |

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/18/2008 5:31:33 PM | The May long weekend is usually a good one for Long Beach (knock wood!) - best place on earth IMHO.
Horne Lake Caves are on my list and Cathedral Grove is a beautiful spot also. I'm not too sure I can keep up with the drinkers and late night partiers but I will sure try

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/18/2008 8:19:13 PM | | i love camping.......have tent n stuff and would love to go camping.....would be curious tho if it would be a "family" type event or adult only event......just so i know if i can bring my kids or not ;) | |
|

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/20/2008 7:18:55 AM | Jayney..... any of the camping that I have been to (even if I haven't spent the night just the day) have been family oriented both the whiskey creek event and the one in Powell River had things for the kids to do. Most of us have kids and its a family outing, haven't been to any that were just Adult oriented. Take care and maybe see you out this summer... if I get any time off that is... | |

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/21/2008 7:02:12 PM | | Count me in too.....I love to camp and boat.....Long Beach may be hard as quite often you need reservations to be guaranteed a spot, which is even harder to do with a larger group of people, and lots of people will have made reservations already. There are a number of BC Forest Service campgrounds....they are free, but non reservable and next to no services. But if someone picks a spot and a date, I'll be there whether there's services or not. | |

| Camping on Vancouver Island!!! Posted: 2/21/2008 7:15:18 PM | I have three tents and only got out once last year. This year I want to do a lot more camping and now that I have a one year old small dog I am hoping to bring her with me to join in the day time fun. | |
