| Modern Crime As An Entity Posted: 2/17/2008 12:27:57 PM | I went to the movies on Sunday for the first time in it seemed forever. What was the movie of choice? One I had heard briefly in an advertisement blurb named “The Departed”. For some reason I have a fondness for well made wise guy movies and this one ranks up top with the best of them. If I had known beforehand that it was a Martin Scorsese that had written and directed the movie I would have more then likely whole heartedly wanted to see it. It got me thinking on many different levels about what a career in crime today would be like if crime were truly as it was in the movies.
Large crime syndicates are like major corporations. When you join a major crime organization, they offer all kinds of benefits but unfortunately one them is NOT medical insurance. How many times in a movie have you seen a wise guy get shot or stabbed and you wonder if it will be fatal? Hell it is ALWAYS fatal since you will never be taken to see a doctor or a hospital to save your life. You will lay there wallowing in your own blood like Tim Roth did in Reservoir Dogs for the length of the entire movie until everyone including you is DEAD! If I were the leader of a world wide crime organization, you bet I would get some of the best meatball doctors there are. Just look for guys who worked on the front in any war zone and you have your doctors that can handle anything. Sure they might have been disbarred from medical associations for weird and cruel experimentation! Good cronies are hard to find and you just cannot throw a noob new in off the street to take the place of your number one hitter. This is where all crime fails miserably.
Another area a person can make an incredible wind fall is in supplying major crime organizations with uniforms. Can you just imagine supplying all the uniforms for say Spectre? You would be rolling in cash since they have operatives everywhere not to mention in their largest bases of operation all garb must be color coordinated along with safety equipment that meets strict standards. How about the real estate agent that must find and aquire the land used to build bases in exotic places? They have to be charging at least 15-20% for doing so. Not bad! You could also supply arms for such an organization but that is treading on dangerous ground. The first time an evil culprit kills a good guy they would come looking for you double quick to get info and you end up dead! What food supplier would NOT want the contract to feed all those hungry 300 people working in Dr. No’s hide out. Taking over the world makes men hungry and you have to keep them thinking straight and concentrating when having to calculate and aim that new death ray of yours.
The new mafia is much more forgiving then 25 years ago. If you have a rat in your group, you would have just whacked everyone and started anew. Mafia bosses at the present are very charismatic and will always joke with you. Gone are the days of a boss such as Scarface that would upon hearing your report, stick his face in a plate of coke and proceed to place 946 rounds into your body. The Mafia of today understands the value of it’s various personnel. The Mafia is like Satan worshippers in the movies. Every time you turn around you are bumping into one. Do you wish to do something other then whack people? If you have political aspirations, you can get there through a your Mafia position. Want to be a cop? You can do that also. Any position you wish to hold. There are always multiple cronies working in these kind of places as a fail safe in case you fail or have a change of heart.
It is fortunate for us the movies are movies and most genius does not engage in crime as we see daily with the idiots that are caught in the most ridiculous fashions. Someday we shall see the movie “Lee Crawford, Top Crime Fashion Designer!”. | |
