What kind of wildlife lives where you live?
Posted: 2/18/2008 3:48:33 AM
Hi I just want to know what wildlife is lives in your local patch, eg your garden, park, woodland, seaside, etc.

For example I live in Norwich, Norfolk in England. I go birdwatching so I go to most habitats, but in my local patch I oftern see Jays, grey squirrels, blue tits, great tits, great spotted woodpecker. my local patch turns from a field of grass to a meadow in the summer. it has woodland patchs surrounding the field and attracts dog walkers. my greatest spot though was to see a sparrowhawk there.

So I like to hear what animal and plant life you see in your local patch, what its like and what was your most greatest find in it. Dont forget to tell me what part of the country you life in and if your from the US tell me what you guys see as I will be interested to hearing from you.

Yeah, I'm just not seeing enough tits around here. I'd *love* to see some great tits around here. Tits rule ;-).

Ok, my juvenile moment is over ;-). But seriously, dude. Can you bird watcher guys actually say "tit" to a female birdwatcher and not giggle, not even a smirk? I know I couldn't. I think I couldn't even resist a little downward eye flicker ;-).

BUT. To be mature for just a sec, to repay you for the little laugh. I live on a good few acres in the boreal forest in SW Quebec. So, alot of raptors. Redtail hawks, a few bald eagles (but we're in Canada, not the US, so we don't worship them, they're just another bird ;-). Great horned owls, barred owls, screech owls. The occasional peregrine falcon, but rare. The normal corvids, the jays, the crows, the ravens. Had an influx of turkey vultures the last few years. Three types of woodpeckers, pileateds, mostly.

In the lake in my front yard, I get great blue herons, the occasional bittern, redwing blackbirds. The lake's too small for loons, but you hear them flying by sometimes.

And on the edible side, the ducks, often mallards, teals, ruffed grouse, turkeys.

Add to that gray wolves, black bears, whitetail deer, the occasional moose, fox, fishers (picture a twenty pound ferret), porcupines, one beaver in the lake, some muskrats...

Yeah, living in this wild New World is alot of fun ;-).

There. I've done my pennance for the whole "tit" thing ;-).

Dude, it's Canada. Over 80% of the country is "Crown Land", or "Terraine Publique" as we call it here in Quebec.

It's not like England, or even the US. There are about seven million people in Quebec. And over half of those live in either Montreal or Quebec City. And *Quebec alone* is about ten times the size of England (at about a million and a half square kilometers).

That leaves an *awful* lot of room for the critters to roam and be happy and stay out of our way. You can still theoretically go places where no man has ever gone. You can still fish for fish in lakes with no names, because no one owns them, and no one named them.

I know you Europeans have a hard time getting your heads around that, this concept of "empty" and "unowned" and "wild". But, over here? We're loaded with it ;-).

I actually grew up in PEI (no more free lessons, look it up your self you tosser ;-).

As a young lad, local lobster fishermen actually put a bounty on shag. They nested on the cliffs, and would follow the lobster boats. Lobsters too small to keep are tossed back overboard, and the shag would dive and catch them and obviously eat them.

Yep, but that would require another joke, hey, even an advert, maybe, in a birder's journal:

"Missing great tits. But home to a great shag. Inquire within."

;-).

From where I live in California, I hardly see any wildlife. But when I use to live in Arkansas, I seen alot of Rabbits, Turtles, Snakes, armadillos, Ducks, & I think I seen some foxes, but I couldn't tell if they were foxes or not, since they were so far & they were running.

Ahhh that explains it, a Cowboy from PEI K, insider joke lol

Raccoons, coyotes, skunks, occasional lost deer, cougar or black bear, but really mostly wildly mismanaged and cared for dogs and cats from neighbors shytting in the gardens...
and then there are fruit flies, regular lil critters that drive you wild.... bait with orange peel and trap them in the microwave , close door and zap

birds and beavers are mostly watched in shopping malls, down town and on the beaches.

I'm blessed with Cardinals; Blue Jays; Squirrels; Rabbits; Woodpeckers; Martins; Mourning Doves; Coyotes; and Finches. Every day is a good day if I don't encounter Fire Ants.

Quebec sounds like they have the same kind of wild life as we have in Calgary Alberta. The one neat thing about Calgary is its provincial park going right through the middle of the city. Because of this park we get all kinds of birds and squirels and rabbits pop into the city quite fequently, but we also get deer! That was a new thing for me to be pulling into a parking space and see deer grazing 20 feet from the road.
Also Alberta has a bird called the Magpie. It's a scavenger bird that most people don't like cause they're a pest, but I've never seen em before I moved here.

I live in Crawley which is part of a very beautiful county called West Sussex in UK....sadly the town does not follow the county.

YOu quite often see the local "chav" here...can be quite vicious and usually left to its own devices but sometimes its good to bait these creatures to see what kind of reaction you get. But be warned in groups they have been known to attack unprovoked.

I have seen deer and alot of ducks at the ponds down the sidewalk in the woods, not too far from where I live. The ducks should fly away to warmer weather in the winter but they don't unfortunately. The winter's here are harsh.

I sometimes walk to a place called Bushrangers Bay, near my home ,on the Mornington Peninsula, Australia. There is a three kilometre track through National park that leads to an ocean beach with rock pools.
I often see groups of kangaroos there as well as the smaller wallabies. Some of the Grey Kangaroos stand at least 6 feet tall, they are very impressive. Last time I walked there, about 2 months ago, I got a shock when I nearly stepped on a Brown Snake that was sunbaking on the path. It was fairly sluggish and took a while to move off, my Jack Russell didn't seem to see it fortunately.
The strangest thing that I have seen there was when an octopus was trapped in a rock pool by the receding tide, this might sound like BS but I was standing at the edge of the pool and it reached out of the water with one of its tentacles to touch my foot. I stepped back before it touched me but I was surprised, they usually keep a low profile.

Bears, Cougars, Wolves. Things to consider when you're camping, or sometimes just out for a walk in the woods or on the beach. You've entered the food chain, and you're not at the top.

Haven't worked out the quote thing yet.... so a cut and paste will have to do....
"YOu quite often see the local "chav" here..."
Have just been to England and spotted a few, they bear a passing resemblance to our 'bogans' here.

Blue ring octopus Natureguy?? Nasty.
I live in a suburban bayside suburb, but can still find the odd koala...by watching for people standing around looking up into a tree, possums which can be heard marching around in the roof. I live in a small townhouse with courtyard, but have always had a blue tongue lizard, found a baby one inside the other day. On dusk the flying foxes fly over (fruit eating bats) and takes about 45 mins for the mob to pass over. Plenty of birds including native rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, curlews, but lots of imported type birds like indian mynas. Lots of other imported creatures like foxes and the nationally detested cane toad imported from south america to eat the bugs from sugar cane......they ignored the bugs and found our native environment to their taste!

I've got coyotes that roam the cemetary behind me. Wingnuts actually, unlike dogs they haven't any concept of fear of vehicles and I am afraid they will end up as road kill one day. Other than that there is a ton of deer and foxes that live in the area.

hey s2locke,
i live in inverness - the original & best, not the one in the us!
i have the usual suspects at the feeder in the garden - dunnock, robins, thrush, blackbirds & a selection of tits - blues, coal & great. occasionally see a sparrowhawk making a fast pass over the feeder but usually just catch its arse disappearing. can hear tawny owls at night in the trees.
out & about theres buzzards & a few red kites around that were reintroduced a few years ago & doing quite well. if you go to the mountains west of here theres ravens & golden eagles though havent seen one of them for years. was in skye last summer & went on a boat to see white tailed sea eagles - massive!
as for animals - roe deer, red deer, foxes, badgers, pine martens, red squirrles & otters(more than most people think - i fish so see them fairly regularly). wildcats getting very rare.
about an hour from here on the a9 is the highland wildlife park which has a selection of past & presentscottish birds & animals - snowy owls, wolves, lynx, bison etc.
