For instance, the indie music bit.
If you want to understand white people, you need to understand indie music. As mentioned before, white people hate anything that’s “mainstream” and are desperate to find things that are more genuine, unique, and reflective of their experiences.
Fortunately, they have independent music.
A white person’s iPod (formerly CD collection) is not merely an assemblage of music that they enjoy. It is what defines them as a person. They are always on the look out for the latest hot band that no one has heard of so that one day, they can hit it just right and be into a band BEFORE they are featured in an Apple commercial. To a white person, being a fan of a band before they get popular is one of the most important things they can do with their life. They can hold it over their friends forever!
Indie music also produces a lot of concerts, for which white people can attend and meet other white people. It’s especially useful, since they are attending the same concert, they both like the artist and can easily strike up a conversation that will flow from band at the show->other bands they like->where they went to/go to school->where to get the best vegan food in town->agreement to meet at said restaurant for awkward date.
It is worth noting that white people are expected to stay current with music and go to concerts well into their 40s. Unlike at dance or hip hop clubs, there are few stigmas attached to being the “old guy at the club.”
But BE WARNED, talking about Indie Music with white people is perhaps the most dangerous subject you touch upon. One false move and you will lose their respect and admiration forever. Here are some general rules
Bands that have had their songs in an Apple ad are still marginally acceptable
Bands that have had their songs in ads for other companies are not acceptable
If you mention a band you like and the other person has heard of them, you lose. They own you. It is essential that you like the most obscure music possible.
Remember, popular artists can turn unpopular in a heartbeat (Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, The Strokes), so you would be best to stick to the following statements: “I love the Arcade Fire,” “I still think the Montreal scene is the best in the world,” “I would die without Stereogum or Fluxblog“* and “Joanna Newsom is maybe the most original artist today.” | |

okay... I checked out the link...and as a woman of colour...living in a Whitebread town...and very comfortable btw.... I found the article a bit stilted, persumptious, and insulting....here is some of what I take issue with the following , this is an excerpt from the article:

During this time, they are permitted to talk at great lengths about themselves, listen to The Smiths, and get free dinners from friends who think “they shouldn’t be alone right now.”
It is imperative that you do not attempt to kick them out of their misery by saying things like “get over it,” “there are other people out there,” or “I don’t want to read your poem.” Implying that there things in the world more important to you than their breakup is considered one of the rudest actions possible.

I have found myself totally mesmerized by the entertainment television shows known as Court TV....and have you caught any of the Divorce Court crap?... the majority of them are not White Liberals.... check out the Trailer Trash types and the Inter-City folk.... I mean...example here:
HE and SHE are getting a divorce and take it on a national syndicated court show....grounds for divorce?...well SHE lost 250lbs....and lost her booty...and is now a svelt 300lbs....HE now wants out of the marriage. SHE is way too skinny for HIM.
SHE wanted HIM to join her in 3somes and HE refused HER request.... yes...so now they are on a national syndicated court show to get a divorce.
so.... I guess mainstream Liberal White Folk just blog.....and want to garner sympathy...while their poorer Visible Minority or Economically inferior counterparts go on the telly to broadcast their business. | |

I can sort of relate to your post, since my iPod is filled with obscure music (and some more mainstream stuff) , but I don’t trump my friends with it – in fact I’m always looking for mew music that I like – and I don’t know the name of a single artist from an iPod commercial.
Quite the opposite about hearing about a band first – I ask what people are listening to – because I wanna see if I like them too… music is a large part of my day – I listen to music at work about 7 hrs a day..
I think there are people that fit the mould of your thread – but that’s not “white people”. Your thread is referring to a very small minority of people – that the original author is probably associating with, out of all the people I know – this would only describe 1 or 2… and neither of them are white | |
