| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 2:43:33 PM | I just heard on the news, 40 percent of Ontarioians worked today, and child care workers closed, sigh what do they do with the kids this is not fair, what do you think, should we work I SAY NOT | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 2:49:33 PM | Is it a civic or stat holiday?
Either way, any employer worth their salt that has to keep their business operating that day, should at least give their staff with family still at home the first choice on whether or not they wish to work...
If it's a statuary holiday, well, at least it'll be double time and a half...
I don't think our opinions will make that much of a difference to the government or employers. Who amongst us has never had to work a holiday? I just can't see this new one being treated any different. Especially compared to the more important ones, such as Easter and Christmas...

| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 2:52:16 PM | | How did you get the vote box to appear? I wasn't aware that is available. | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 2:55:09 PM | | I work for the YMCA School Aged Child Care - we were closed because schools were closed and they also purposely did not offer services because they wanted families to actually spend time together! The demise of the family and the community as a whole is happening because there is no parental guidance or relationship - parent to child. I think there should be a family day at least once a month - since both parents must work to make a living!! Families need more time together! | |

| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 3:14:24 PM | no . .. it's a holiday . . . while there are some people and professions that have to remain open for good reasons, the rest of us should get the day off. and there should be an option of getting a day off for those people who HAVE to work (I'm talking essential services here . . fire, police, medical, timmmies. . *cough*) to make up for the fact that they didn't get this day off
reminds me of a company I used to work for . . american based. they made EVERY canadian stat holiday mandatory (one that wasn't shared with the US of course. . .) and even then there was extreme pressure to work OT during the stat (and if you were a new hire, either from a staffing agency or still on your probation period this "option" wasn't there. you didn't show up for any OT you were let go)
nobody should have to deal with that . . hence the "no" vote

| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 3:34:21 PM | | I don't think it should be the provincial government's responsibility to tell you to spend time with your family or to give you a special day to do it. Every day should be family day and you should always spend time with them. I don't see a need for a special family day. | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 3:51:46 PM | This holiday was a rush job. I think because it was a campaign promise , there was a lot of pressure to push it through so as not to be seen as another broken campaign promise.
I found there to be a lot of confusion about what was closed and open today. It was a head scratcher for sure. Most retail closed, bank closed, buses on holiday schedule yet dollar stores were open, all entertainment and food industry (they rarely close even) Yet passport offices were open, we at Canada Post worked and any other federal gov't agency was not permitted the holiday.
There are kinks to be worked out for sure before next year's holiday rolls around, if it lasts that long.
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 3:53:01 PM | I don't think this holiday was given enough thought before it was established. It is like any other long weekend; some employers embrace it, some don't.
thestar.com had an article a while back that stated if the City of Toronto gives all its workers the day off, it will cost the City $5,000,000.
It is going to take time for the province to get it rolling, because, many folks have contracts stating the number of paid holidays, and this one would not be factored in for this year.
There could be a lot of changes by next year at this time.
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 4:06:29 PM | | ^^^^ Guess thats why they raised my property taxes! Could be another reason why they implemented the 100 percent increase in land transfer tax! | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 4:09:00 PM | I work for a major furniture retailer, the only one of them to actually be open today.....it was a wasted day, really. Sure I get time-and-a-half, but they're comping for that with a day off next weekend, a delayed long weekend, as it were.
I think all civic holidays are a joke because everything's still OPEN!
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 5:40:33 PM | I enjoyed the day with the kids...it will take a while before it is a holiday like any stat holiday!
Either way we went rollerblading at Scooter's in Mississauga and we played Crazy Eights after dinner.....we enjoyed it!
Call in sick? | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 5:51:46 PM | Just one question... How many would complain if everything was closed today? Including Hospitals, Fire stations, Police, Grocery stores etc.. They have children too!
Yes it's sad that some people had to work, and that many daycare centers were closed. My ex worked in Healthcare and worked every other holiday, try finding daycare on Christmas!... Life isn't fair! Sometimes we get what we want sometimes we don't..
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 8:09:09 PM | | I work for a major grocery store. Most of our stores were open, mine wasn't. I had the day off with pay. Part timers did not get paid. Family Day resulted in a smaller paycheques for these people. Stores that were open, staff had to deal with daycares being shut down. The government thinks we should be spending more time together as families yet allows retailers to open everyday of the year. Who do they think the majority of employees are? Lot's are single parents. Most make minimum wage, a day off without pay creates hardship. Good idea having a new holiday. Bad idea when it's not for everyone and they don't get paid. | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 8:31:54 PM | | Well it worked for me, the whole familly day thing. It equaled to a late night last night watching movies with my son and a whole day of fun with him today. I think other than emregency services this holiday should be the most signifigant one too parents. Should help you realize that life is too busy and any extra quality time you can have with your child, take and enjoy. | |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/18/2008 9:37:00 PM | Family Day didn't benefit as many people as what prior-Sunday shopping once did. Everyone wanted Sunday shopping here, and now that it's been here a long time now, we can't go back.
All it did was increase hydro/water/gas use which polluted the environment more (I can see David Suzuki campaigning to reverse Sunday shopping).
Sunday shopping they said back then was to help the economy and all of that crap and yet Toronto is now in the biggest hole they've ever been in. I would be in favour of going back a huge step and reversing Sunday shopping so that EVERYONE can benefit from it instead of just 40% of the population. Stupid government.

I don't think it should be the provincial government's responsibility to tell you to spend time with your family or to give you a special day to do it. Every day should be family day and you should always spend time with them. I don't see a need for a special family day. Easy enough for you to say i guess I'm a single mother witha full time job I leave for work before my daughter leaves for school She comes home for lunch and I can't She gets home from school more than 2 hrs before I get home from work Dinner, homework & showers leaves little family time for us
I live in NS and our wise premiere takes the same attitute as you- we don't need Family day here because everyday is Family Day in Nova Scotia Oh really??
Places like passport offices and other government offices stayed open because it was a Provincial stat holiday and a lot of government offices are Federal
I know that a girl that works in Ottawa at the same company I work for here & she had to work. I told her to make sure she gets her double pay
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/25/2008 8:48:13 PM | Incentives and additional pay should be offered to those that choose to work.
| |
|
| Family Day Posted: 2/26/2008 3:28:25 AM | ^Yeah, but my company decided to balance the extra pay with a 3 day weekend, so it works out the same...cheap buggers...
Mine was the only big-box furniture retailer to be open, and we were open as per home office...and everyone at home office....GOT THE DAY OFF! Kinda tells you who the half-wits are in my company.
