| Selective E-mail Notifications Posted: 2/19/2008 6:38:10 PM | I want to receive e-mail notifications at my off-site e-mail when someone sends me a message here, etc., but I do not wish to receive e-mail notifications for "new matches" of the week.
How do I do this?
Thank you. | |

| Selective E-mail Notifications Posted: 2/19/2008 7:27:57 PM | You can't separate the two at this point via site settings in your Mail Settings
You could set up an email filter in your off-site mail client to toss new match notifications as I believe the subject lines of each type of email are different.
Query the email subject for a specifc word such as "match" and also query from who the sender is, that being customercare@plentyoffish.com

| Suggestion: Granular E-mail Notifications Posted: 7/5/2008 9:48:10 AM | I'd like to see the E-mail Notifications section of the Mail Settings reorganized as follows...
E-mail notification
Notifications sent to this address:
Notify me about:
[ X] New mail. [ X] Someone added me as a favourite. (3 per day max). [O] Weekly new matches. [X] Local singles events.
Thank you for your consideration.

| Suggestion: Granular E-mail Notifications Posted: 7/5/2008 6:20:23 PM | | How many weekly matches emails do you get? Unless you've got fifteen profiles my guess is one. If that is interfering with all the emailing flooding into your box I think there are other issues. I just simply delete that sucker and move on, if I even see it amidst the other emails. But if it's that much of an issue the junk filter trick suggested by Trapped works wonders. | |

| Suggestion: Granular E-mail Notifications Posted: 7/6/2008 9:49:09 AM | Deuce Light, I don't get a flood of e-mail, but I would prefer e-mail that was interesting to me. To me, an e-mail from a woman is interesting, and an e-mail of computer-generated match ups...not so interesting.
Also, the "Your Matches" e-mail carries your login password in plain text. I don't want my password floated about in plain text.
The filter trick suggested by Trapped is good, but it won't work for people who have Hotmail or a similarly limited e-mail service.
I would think that less “Your matches” e-mail would also mean more computing time could be spent on more important tasks. So if I can opt out of the "Your matches" e-mail, then I get what I want, and someone else benefits from the freed computer time--win win.
Are you suggesting that the Suggestion forum is just here for appearances? I don’t believe it. If you have anything constructive to say about my thoughtful contribution, give ‘er.

The filter trick suggested by Trapped is good, but it won't work for people who have Hotmail or a similarly limited e-mail service. Unless they're using some very outdated email service, most people can sort and filter their mail. It's become a pretty basic function for any email provider, so it's just a matter of learning how.
I know for certain that it can be done with Hotmail because I use it myself to get rid of unwanted junk. I can have email either sorted automatically into other folders (my Junk folder, for example) or I can choose to have certain mail deleted without my ever having to see it.
Admin has said he has reasons for sending the weekly email the way he does, so until he changes his mind our only option is to take care of it on our end.

| Suggestion: Granular E-mail Notifications Posted: 7/6/2008 9:18:24 PM | You really are mistaken. FREE Hotmail doesn't offer rule based filters.
Yes. Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, and other e-mail services have mechanisms for flagging e-mail as junk, but... ...Using junk filters to block opt-in e-mail is WRONG!
If you support POF, and I DO, then you SHOULD NOT instruct POFers to flag POF messages as JUNK as this has the nasty side effect of blacklisting the POF network.
Filter POF push e-mail with: - Regular mail filters...? Yes - Junk mail filters...? HELL NO

FREE Hotmail doesn't offer rule based filters. My free Hotmail does, and by setting up the filters properly I can have mail automatically deleted or sorted to other folders without marking it as spam. In my account the procedure is as follows:
Click on Options. Scroll down to Customize your mail. Click on Automatically sort e-mail into folders. Click on the New filter button and set up the criteria.
Sending stuff to your Junk Mail folder doesn't necessarily tag it as spam for Hotmail. It depends on what settings you choose for your account.
I use the Junk Mail folder as a convenient place to send mail that I'm pretty sure I want deleted automatically, but set it up so it won't delete it immediately. That way I get a chance to check on it if I need to.
Using junk filters to block opt-in e-mail is WRONG! Marking opt-in email as spam is wrong. Automatically sending it somewhere where you won't have to deal with each piece individually is just fine.
Junk mail filters...? HELL NO There's nothing wrong with junk mail filters if you take the time to learn how they work.

| Suggestion: Granular E-mail Notifications Posted: 7/7/2008 8:53:12 PM | This thread is getting off topic.
I logged into a for leisure Hotmail account and I see that my Hotmail server (large networks like Hotmail are distributed over multiple servers) is now up to the same revision as yours and it does have regular e-mail filters. Also you're right, using a regular e-mail filter to move certain messages into the Junk mail folder is sometimes useful, especially if you need more information before officially (using the mark as Junk feature) flagging something as Junk.
Deuce Light stepped out of line, and I mistook you for a bad-Deuce duplicate.
However, be careful. You took my words "Junk mail filters...? HELL NO" out of context. I know very well how Junk mail filters work. My favourite uses a combination of address book weighting, 3-way user-definable spam scoring, a backscatter whitelist hosts list (because I have my own SMTP servers), a trainable personal bayes database, and of course a global continuously updated bayes database. In context: "Filter POF push e-mail with Junk mail filters...? HELL NO" You, "Marking opt-in email as spam is wrong," already agreed with that point.
This is a suggestion thread. Let's put down the flame throwers, file the feature requests (See messages 1 and 3), and move on.
Thank you.

| Suggestion: Granular E-mail Notifications Posted: 7/7/2008 9:33:52 PM | I would think that less “Your matches” e-mail would also mean more computing time could be spent on more important tasks. So if I can opt out of the "Your matches" e-mail, then I get what I want, and someone else benefits from the freed computer time--win win. reality of the situation is that decision tree logic will take longer to process than "straight through processing" - no real gains.
but I would prefer e-mail that was interesting to me. To me, an e-mail from a woman is interesting, and an e-mail of computer-generated match ups...not so interesting the interesting emails are on POF not your off site email, hence it has little baring on the receipt of a suggested method of canning a piece of junk email that you have no interest in, or for that matter any of the notifications emails.
If you have anything constructive to say about my thoughtful contribution, give ‘er. in the absence of an immediate, pending or viable implementation, suggested work arounds are offered that may accomplish your wish or negate their need.
Your suggestion is, I assume, based on you not wanting to see certain notification emails, or simply re-organizing them as you state
Opt in/out of POF mail notification Opt in/out of Event notifications Opt in/out of Favourite Adds Filter New Matches notifications out directly to junk folder or deleted immediately depending on off site email used
100% accomplished already, no additional site resources need be devoted.
Thread wasn't off topic as a work around to your suggestion was being discussed.
In any event - suggestion noted for Admin's resourcing queue.
