| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/22/2008 5:10:47 AM | The official announcement is coming next week but it looks like Philly is getting the 16th MLS franchise , starting in 2010 . Philadelphia beat out St. Louis for the right to join the league, helped in no small part by the state of Pennsylvania's decision to approve $47 million in state funding for a proposed $115 million stadium in Chester, Pa. They have an established soccer fan base - the Sons of Ben . It's an exciting time for MLS , with Toronto FC adding excitement in the north , Beckham in LA , San Jose here now and Seattle next year . | |

| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/22/2008 9:52:19 AM | step by step, football will be embraced by north americans.
it will not be easy with MLB, NBA and NFL but all will come, sure! right now most of american children and teenagers play football at school and universities, so it is a matter of time.
however, the future of the US national team is brighter than the MLS

| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/22/2008 11:47:50 AM | | Several MLS stars are playing with Fulham of the Premier League , aka Team North America, including Eddie Johnson , Brian McBride and Clint Dempsey . This helps dispel the notion that MLS is a retirement league but a young , vibrant league that can produce world class talent . | |

....the fan base is there but the quality of play has to improve in N. america...before you can have good solid attendance records.
...the problem is not in expansion but the caliber of players that make up these teams.
......right now, the average team in the MLS is made up of mostly 'scrubs' from S. america & europe....................so you are not gonna get large crowds on average to see a typical game!
.....the largest turn outs are when good quality european teams come over for exhibition games......with their big name players!
......the MLS has a few notable players, but many are at their later stages in their career...such as Beckham!

| not so MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/24/2008 6:28:53 AM | I applaud anything that increases the coverage of the MLS here in the states. The Spanish games are by far my favorite, but I stongly support the expansion of the teams here in the US!
True, the caliber of play here isn't on par with the rest of the world, but since when has that stood in our way? It's not the "scrubs" that are coming here to play, it's the big stars when they know they're getting past their "prime". I think that's wonderful! They may not be at the top of their game in the manner that they were 10 years ago, but they are still fantastic, know what they are doing, and can teach us A LOT! They're activly involved in increasing the accuracy, precision, and finess that we lack now. Being the professionals that they are, I can only imagine the draw that must have to them.
GO MLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| not so MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/24/2008 11:54:20 AM | the problem arises from the fact that football has to fight against MLB, NBA and NFL, and of course against the press and TV channels.
you have millions of children and teenagers playing the sport, but when they become adult, they get the same shite from TV so it appears suddenly that they do not care about the sport they used to care about in the past. or on the other hand they still have the same interest, but they do not watch anything on TV.
Television is quite important to get something. when i was a kid there was a time (six months more or less) that me and some friends used to play baseball with pieces of wood and tennis balls, we really enjoyed and liked it. however, Spain is a typical football country with no baseball at all, none "ordinary" Spanish TV channel has ever showed a baseball game, so that strange interest of mine for a year really disappeared amongst years and years of bullfights and football games on TV, etc
as for american footballers, there are plenty of good ones, the problem is they are not stars nor do they have a famous name, so the greatest European clubs will never sign them. well there are some of them who played for great teams like Tim Howard or Casey Keller but they are a minority.

| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/27/2008 11:12:52 AM | i imagine most of English speaking people do not know that the Spanish word 'Real' used by sporting clubs, academies, associations, etc is translated into English as 'Royal'. it has nothing to do with real in the meaning of true.
so it would make more sense to call it 'Royal Salt Lake'. it was the owner of the club (ex-owner of Utah Jazz i think) who chose the name "Real Salt Lake", a way of honoring Real Madrid as he has stated several times. two summers ago Madrid travelled to the US and played several friendly games, one of them at Salt Lake. because of the popularity of the act and game (the Spanish team was received and honored by the Utah governor) it was announced a new stadium for the local team, but really i do not know if it has been built or not (the local press and many people were against the idea, as the stadium was to be paid with money coming from taxes, and some people even stated that the team was a joke).
anyway, Real Salt Lake is not the only team honoring Madrid. the famous English team Leeds United Football Club turned its colour into white, honoring the great and mighty Real Madrid of the 50's (who won 5 European cups or now called Champions League from 1951 to 1955).

| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/27/2008 12:12:34 PM | Im sure if more Americans knew they want the name of real salt lake changed. They can be funny about things like that.
But yeah. Silly name anyway.

the MLS has some of the stupidest names for teams of all the professional sports in the USA.
.........real salt lake is not the worse one! .............my favorite stupid name is the "columbus crew"............Columbus is the name of a city in the state of Ohio....so they made a play on words using the word "crew"....very simplistic!

| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/28/2008 11:25:27 AM | what about New York Red Bulls? i never realised that there are bulls dressed in red or with a red skin The reason for the New York Red Bulls name is because they are sponsored by a company which makes the energy drink Red Bull not because they are interested in bull fighting!!
and about LA Galaxy? Have no idea why there called LA Galaxy..Maybe a fan in California could tell us all.

| MLS expansion - Philadelphia 16th team Posted: 2/28/2008 6:34:15 PM | ........Hams is correct about the 'red bulls'......they are owned by a Austrian company that makes the sports drink called 'red bull'..............maybe they should market the product as an aphrodisiac as well!!!... ..........not only will they sell more drinks but they will probably draw more fans to see the red-bulls play!
.......its is not the worst one!.......before they were owned by this company they used to be called the "metro-stars"..........believe me, they were certainly not 'metro'...and there were few if any 'stars' on that team!..........the name 'sub-urban nobodies' would have been more appropriate!
.......LA Galaxy....i'm not sure, but you know that they had to have their head well past the clouds to think of a name like that!........who knows what they were smoking!
.......right off the top of my head, i could think of 2 names far better than either one! 1. NY-Hitmen 2.LA-low riders
