What do YOU think newly-minted millionaire Bobby Harris should do with all that cash?

Georgia hardhat is Mega-thrilled with $270M Mega Millions jackpot win
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Sunday, February 24th 2008, 3:29 AM

An ironworker who lives in a trailer in a Georgia backwater says he is the sole winner of the $270 million Mega Millions jackpot - and wasted no time turning his back on his old life.

"I used to live in a trailer. And I used to be an ironworker," Bobby Harris, 47, of tiny Portal in the Peach State, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Saturday.

"I called my boss this morning and told him I was quitting," Harris said. "He understood."

Harris lives with his wife, Tonya, in a mobile home on a road called Cowboy Way in the tiny town of 600, about 200 miles from Atlanta.

Records show they had declared bankruptcy twice.

Bobby picked the numbers and Tonya, a homemaker, bought the two $1 tickets just a few hours before the Friday night drawing, according to their daughter Felicia Williamson, 32.

It was the couple's first time playing Mega Millions, and Bobby used the birth dates of five of their six grandchildren to pick the winning numbers: 7, 12, 13, 19, 22. The all-important Mega Ball number of 10 - which made the difference between taking home $250,000 or $270 million - was chosen randomly for the month October, Williamson said.

"It's overwhelming. He had no clue he'd won until I called him this morning," Williamson said, explaining that her father cried when he realized they really had struck it lucky.

"We're still in shock. It was much needed, in every way. We get by but we live week to week."

The couple's windfall dashed the dreams of millions of New Yorkers who had hoped to grab the humongous prize.

Anticipation had been at a fever pitch for the drawing because there had been no jackpot winner since Jan. 4. The prize had grown until it was tied for the fifth largest in the game's history.

Bobby Harris said he and his wife, who have two daughters who also live in Portal, plan to take the winnings as a lump sum when he drives to Georgia Lottery Headquarters to cash the ticket tomorrow.

That would leave him with $164 million before taxes.

If the couple had taken the annuity option, they would have gotten $10.3 million annually for 26 years. That's quite a change for the couple, who filed for bankruptcy in 1994 and 2000, according to records.

As news trucks rolled up in front of their modest trailer home Saturday, the couple was clearly staggered by their newfound fame - and fortune.

"The CNN truck is pulling up now," Bobby Harris said.

"I'm too happy and confused right now to think too clear."

Georgia Lottery officials said they can't confirm the Harrises are the winners until they turn in the ticket. But that wasn't stopping the celebration in Portal.

"Everybody here's very excited. The whole town is excited," said Georgiana Mulrooney, a clerk at Clyde's Market on Highway 80 where the winning ticket was bought.

"From what I hear about her she really deserves the win. She's a sweet woman and does a lot of hard work."

"She's excited. She's very excited. Wouldn't you be?" said Bonnie Graham, who runs the local diner, City Cafe, and saw the town's new celebrities Saturday morning. "We are all tickled to death for her. She's a good person. She will help anybody."

"It's been a wild old day for her. She just said it hasn't really sunk in," Graham added.

There were 42 second-place winners - including four in New York - who matched every number but the Mega Ball. But they get a relatively measly $250,000 each.

Still, New Yorkers were in a generous mood Saturday, dispensing advice to the Harrises on how to handle their fortune.

"I don't mind if the guy is from Georgia. His dollar is as good as mine," said retired construction worker Patsy Servidio, 75. "But you have to get a good lawyer once you have the winning ticket in your hand."

There's always Tuesday's drawing, of course, but New Yorkers may have to scale back their fantasies a bit. The jackpot is dropping down to a mere $12 million.

Well, at least he turned in ticket. # yrs ago, a NYer won 289 mill, and NEVER turned in ticket!!! And it WAS the biggest in Lotto history!! Who was that? What happen to person?

He's already done the worst thing he could have done.
He told everybody.
Now he's going to find out how many distant relatives he has.
If you ever win a big lotto like that, you should always keep it a secret as long as you can.
Then hire yourself a good lawyer and buy some good books on investing and money management.

The worst of part of when this happens is that it convinces the rest of the "suckers" out there to part w/ even more money in the hopes that it could be them.

The chances of your winning the lottery are SLIGHTLY better than the chances of being struck by lightning....TWICE.
In other words, it almost certainly won't happen.

^^^ I understand the odds and it is high, but people do play and people do win every week and you don't win if you don't play. Everyone has an equal chance so the odds shouldn't scare anyone away. I bet that most people who won the millions thought the same way before they won.. more you play and more frequently just increases the odds.. which is still quite against you..but hell.. JUST IMAGINE THE FREEDOM.. LOTTO 6/49!

First I think he should hide from all the gold diggers...
Then he should check into moving his family to somewhere like Belize or New Zealand..
If I won that much money , I would build my inventions and make this world a better place for everyone..

That would leave him with $164 million before taxes.

Which leaves him with what? Half that amount? Which is equal to just under 1/3rd of the headline....ah reality.......

In Canada, there is no tax on lottery winnings...

Hey...there are always losers at something.
How many work their entire lives then have nothing to show for it at the end?
How many gamble in casinos? Play Super Bowl pools?
Bet on horses? Yes the odds are better, but I'll take a chance on winning $270,000,000.

After taxes he will have 100 million more than he had friday night...

It was good to see someone who wasn't already wealthy win it...

Or anyone who plays it, however, in the state of Georgia, the money is used to pay for college to any student who will maintain a "B" average, so thats a good tax...

Actually the lottery isn't as bad a bet as a lot of people think.
Whenever the jackpot is greater than the odds of hitting it, the lottery is a better bet for the money than any game in any casino in the world.

One of the ways casinos make money is that they never pay " true odds ".
That means that if the chances of doing a particular thing is say 4 to 1, the casino will only pay 3 to 1 or worse. If you look at all the types of bets possible in a casino, you will notice they never pay out equal to the odds.

Now consider, if the odds of hitting the lotto jackpot is say, 17 million to 1 then anytime the payout rolls over enough to be greater than $17 million, you are getting paid better than the odds of it hitting. You are actually getting a bargain for your $1 bet, compared to casinos.
Don't get the idea that you can buy all 17 million possible combinations and come out with a profit however. There's a very good chance you will have to share the jackpot with someone else who also has a winning ticket too.

Here's what they should do....

1. Buy a new house, or at least a new double wide.

2. Buy a new pickup truck.

3. Buy new teeth, they both probably need'em.

4. Buy her new boobs and new wardrobe to go along with them.

5. Give each kid or kids $ 1 mil each to shut'em up.

6. Buy new parts for the moonshine still.

7. Hire a good lawyer and immediately draw up a will.

8. Make a donation to a charity, school, or university.

9. Bank the rest. Live off the interest.

10. Tell all their new found friends and relatives to go to hell.

Why would he take a "lump sum" payment? I think I could live quite well off of 10+million a year for the next 20-25 years. Probably pay less in taxes, and not take that big first loss!

Personally, I would keep wuiet about it. Why take the ticket to the nearest place to get validated when I can show up at the lottery office and let them do it?

WIth that kind of money, I'd put a million into each child and grandchild...as a trust fund whgich would generate about 30-40 thousand a year in income, which they would be getting. they never see the million. It goes back to the estate when they die, and is used to go on to the next generation. It seems that when one generation makes it big, the money is gone by the end of the third generation. (Read that somewhere...probably a lottery site!) At least my way it won't be gone by the time great-grandkids roll around.
Distant relatives? Well...happy to meet you...hope you do well in life, and please, stay distant! Long distance (not collect) calls are welcome at times...but not at 3 AM to send money to bail you out.
I'd try to open an old folks home....perhaps a series of them. Something half decent, that serves good food and has comfortable rooms and furnishings, etc. A place to call "home", and not just a room to be warehoused in till you die.
Plenty of trips, to see things. I wouldn't be going overseas or to South America...seems there is a lot fo people who get kidnapped, and then have to opay thousands of dollars to get free. This is one aspect of corporate workings that you don't hear a lot about. Seems an ex-relative had a job that took him to such places, and he said it was no big deal. They kidnap you, you phone the corporati0n, they pay, and you go free...no big deal. It happens quite a bit.
Sure, a lot of women might go nuts spending a firtune on themselves to look better...hey, why not? If it makes you feel good, do it.
For me? Perhaps a nre vehicle...nothing too flashy or anything. A small farm that I would NOT work...rent out the fields to others. But, use some to plant things like blueberries, raspberries, apples, cherries, walnuts, etc. Maybe even a grove or two of sugar maples, and oaks. In the years to come, they would be a good thing. just let them go for a few years to get well established, and have a natural food source, not only for local wildlife, but for myself.
Open a business? Maybe...maybe not. Perhaps a nice little tearoom, that is open only 3-4 hours a day, serving an assortment of teas and good coffee, along with a very limited menu. Maybe a "soup kitchen" type thing near universities and colleges that could serve hot soup and a couple tea biscuits for a very cheap price. Call it the "Starving Student" or some such...open late during exam time!

If winning the lottery were economically feasible (or even realistic) don't you a major corporation would go the bank, take out a loan, and buy a substantial block of the tickets?

A $270 million windfall would benefit most companies out there.
Even after taxes.

Why don't they do it?
Because the financial professionals they employ would tell them that it is unlikely , bordering on impossible for them to win.
W/O buying the majority of the tickets or w/o losing money.

If winning the lottery is your "dream"...you may want to consider that you're setting the bar for your dreams too low.

I seem to always hear that the winners "have taken the lump sum". Does anyone ever take the full amount over 25 years? I suppose you should if you were an old timer, but if you were relatively young, why would you take the lump sum?

Just in case the world as we now it, changes in very drastic way.. such as New President, world wars and such. Take it all, be done with it, so they can never be heard from again?

yna6 , I started my list other night, changed mind... but yeah.. I would set up each person in my immediate family (all neps/neices/ bros/sis/ EVERYONE), pay off their debts, fix the town up.

The, I would go to World Vision, and see why there's so many starving babies still after 20 yrs of it on tv (I sent a vol app in once to that couple that runs it, never got back to me??) I would use my money, and start rebuilding in some 3rd world countries, like the ones whose mommies walk for miles with half dead babies to get to some water and flour!! How these ladies carry to term in the first place is beyond me.I would march over there for some answers! Then start barking orders, for some reults.

I actually think this stuff, like that cartoon 'what would i do, if I were boss of the world'

I hope he invests wisely and not end up broke like so many lotto winners do.

Hooray for the GA lotto.....

The really big winners are the students of Georgia who receive a portion of every Georgia Lottery ticket sold! Since the inception of the Lottery, more than 1 million students have had the opportunity to attend colleges and technical colleges through Georgia's HOPE scholarship program and more than 850,000 four-year-olds have a chance to get a jump start on their education by attending a high quality Pre-kindergarten program.

Well, folks, should we send them a pc, all set up with POF and an account to POF, then they can check out this thread ?

They are gonna do fine ( ). If I had nerve, I'd take a VW and go there, seriously. They are provably being swamped with heavy NYC lawyers 'the good samaritans' that they are.

Wow, lets go! Anyone? Heres how I see it, we go as is... no city slicker looking types. And cuddle up, talk their lingo. Hey, if that purple haired 'Kimmie"got a job with Anna Nicole Smith, and ran her day to day affairs, then anything is possible. Gotta think, I can do this.

Right place, right time, not for a second, assume no one is making a b line for him and his as we speak. Someone is, and they aare going to get a jov with this family!!

They are probably so nervous, and overwhelmed, God, I hope they are a tight unit family.. or divorce is in the air. (thats a statistic btw, always divorce after big wins)
