Skin care for women over 40
Posted: 2/25/2008 4:42:08 PM
I have used the same products for years.
I have noticed over the last year that my skin has become very sensitive,
even my hair conditioner can cause a reaction.
Has anyone exeperienced this ? I have now had to change my skin cream
to something way way too expensive. I need some suggestions on
a line that firms and makes me still look like Im 20 (LOL!!) No really-
any suggetions would be great.

I have also used an Alpha Hydrox product since my 20's and notice
I cannot use it anymore consistently. I need some advice here.

Thanks.

First of all drink more filtered water, too much toxins in your body. Eat healthier diet, I don't use regular commerical shampoos. I use plain soap then coconut oil for conditoner.
I also use coconut oil for my skin it's a great moisturizer and also gets rid of acne and other skin problems. Next best thing is coconut oil if you don't react to it. Try putting a little bit on your elbow if you don't react to it for a few days you can go ahead and use it.
Stay away from underarm deo it is highly toxic, I also suggest you stay away from most perfume you should be able to get natural perfume from the health food store.

derma e has a reasonably-priced line of products for women with all sorts of skin issues. they do really cutting-edge stuff using essential oils and antioxidants.

burt's bees has some good stuff too. i love their carrot cream.

for hair products, try magical botanicals.

of course, with a gallon bottle of dr. bronner's supermild castille soap for babies and a few essential oils, you can pretty much custom-formulate whatever you need.

Nutri-Metics. They are a bit pricey up front, but when you consider that a collection will last you 6-9 months, it's reasonable. And they work. My mother uses it and people always think she's too young to have a 26 year old daughter. They are also all natural, no testing on animals, no animal by products, etc..

Best thing they have: Nutri-Rich oil. When I remember to use the stuff every night, my skin is fantastic.

And I don't know if you've noticed, but lately some companies have been advertising they use "hyaluronic acid"? Well, Nutri-Metics has had hyaluronic acid in their moisture balance lotion for well over 10 years, but companies now are making it sound like some new advance treatment.

Well, I have always had sensitive skin, but I have also found that now that I'm in my 40s it's become even more sensitive. I can't use most commercial shampoos, just make my head itch. Try something that is tar based for itchy scalp, you'll find the best ones in the pharmacy section of the drug store, not with the regular shampoos. Also, check out a good health food store for a line of shampoos/conditioners by Prairie Naturals. Great stuff if you can find it. Someone else suggested Burt's Bees products as well. Love the stuff, and it can often be found in drug stores, now. Some of the best skin care products are often made by companies who only sell through home sales. Arbonne products are amazing if you can find someone in your area who sells it. Good luck!

Use Cetaphil as a cleanser, that stuff is so gentle you could eat it. I promise. I rinse with a washcloth but you dont have to. Some people use it differently. You can find it anywhere, thats a bonus.

I like the Clinique moisturizer, its not expensive and you only need a small amount. You know it, the old classic yellow one.

I have fairly normal skin so I cant recommend a peel, if youre really that sensitive, you might want a prescription peel.

I am a fan of Burts Bees, Lancome and Clinique.
There is a drugstore line- organic, it's called Kiss My Face. They have a great pure olive oil bar for the face. Huge bar, less than 5.00~ fantastic product.

For good moisturizing with anti-aging benefits~ try some pure Olive Squalene.
It is amazing stuff. A small bottle will last you a very long time. It's found in many high dollar skin care lines. I can send you a supplier link if you can't find it in Google.

I have sensitive skin as well and I am with the other gals on here....

I use Cetaphil to wash my face and a moisturizer called Purpose. Purpose has a redness reducer and an SPF of 30.

The other moisturizer I use is just plain Vitamin E cream. It's very soothing when my face becomes to sensitive.

The only makeup I can tolerate is "Mineral" makeup by Physicians Formula....that is also very gentle.

I have always had very sensitive and dry skin. there are very few products I can actually us.

I am hooked on Clinique. The best part about that brand is that if it isn't working for you or if the product turns on you after half way through using it (which happens to me a lot with beauty products) you can still return it for your money or an exchange.

Alpha Hydroxy is horrible for the skin in my opinion. Why anyone wants to use harsh components on their skin is just something I have never understood. If it burns then it probably isn't good for you. :)

The secret to looking young is to not put any of that crap (chemicals) on your skin, not tan, and drink lots of water. I have always heard that I look 10 years younger than I really am.

I should have mentioned that for eye make up, Almay makes some rockin non-oily make up remover pads. Get them! They rock!

Also for an oily eye makeup remover there is nothing better than Lancome's Bi-Facials.
If you are in Canada, Marcelle's oily remover is identical to Bi-Facials.
Don't sleep in waterproof mascara, tsk.

Clinique makes an excellent makeup brush cleaner.

Omg I could talk about this all day....

I really like Olay's anti aging products (Regenerist, Definity), but supplement it with natural products that I whip up myself. I use witch hazel, aloe vera, honey, apple cider vinegar, vaseline and baby oil on a daily basis. These products are quite cheap, and can be used as the base for other concoctions using oatmeal, plain yogurt, herbs, fruits, shea or cocoa butter, etc. There's lots of natural skin care recipes on the web; you'll find so many you'll probably go cross eyed. Enjoy!

^^^all good stuff.

Honey is a natural humectant and astringent. Bees are cool.

I use glycerine to turn pastes into creams, aloe vera gel makes a good base for homemade cosmetics.

Curly, many of the skin changes you have described can be hormone related. As we enter our 40's, the hormone balances may change due to perimenopause and actually menopause itself...........These changes can reek havoc on our skin! Be careful of hydroxy products, they contain alcohol, and can be very harsh on the skin, especially the face which leads to sensitivity and redness......

I have a very simple skin care routine. I remove my makeup with baby lotion, I wash my face with dove moisturising soap, and I use a light anti-wrinkle moisturiser morning and night. Seems to have worked so far! lol

Hope this helps........

Thank You Lass- you know some of my friends have told me it could
be hormone related and I should look into getting a blood workup.
I think that is going to be my next move. It seems anything I have tried
recently including hair conditioner makes my skin itchy or I break
out in a rash.

I'm not 40, but I'm getting close. I used to use the harsh stuff on my face too, but a little over a yr ago, my skin started to change, my hair started to thin, etc.

If you are wanting something to exfoliate your face with that is decent and gentle, this is what I like to use.

Cetyphil (sp) with some baking soda mixed into it to form a liquidy paste. Use your fingertips only to rub on your face - avoid eye area, and do not do it for long or leave it to dry. Rinse completely or jump into your shower and do the rest of your thang.

Also. Paul Mitchel (sp) has a conditioner called 'The Detangler' (I think...) that has carrot oil as one of its ingredients - and is one of the rare ones that doesn't make me itch. Works great on long/dry/tangly hair.

(and use the Cetyphil to remove eye make up, even water proof mascara, and the rest of it all. Very nice.

As for moisturizing? I started using a product from the company that makes 'Blue Emu' ointment. Actually the ointment itself (although blue) makes a great moisturizer. No allergic reactions here yet. But their line of facial care is listed under 'Ume'. Absolutely amazing stuff. You should check out their ingredients. You'll fall in love. = umeskin . com I don't know what it costs, sorry to say - I got the line as a gift. But it's wonderful.

(it's possible they've changed the ingredients in your hair care products, and that's why you're having a reaction to it now...)

I can not say enough about this product. I love Blue Emu (http://www.blue-emu.com). As someone that is allergic to 90% of the stuff she touches this is one thing that I can consistently use and also gives me relief. I've been getting it for a few years and it has never turned on me. I used it on all my areas including the face and it lasts a long time because you use it pretty sparingly. It's one of the very few things I can use to moisturize my severely dry skin and not have it break out from. Emu oil has amazing healing properties. I first started using emu oil about 10 years ago and loved it, this product makes it even easier to use it. It lasts a long time and if you have a membership at Sam's Club you can get it fairly inexpensive.

I'm surprised no one has included sunscreen - and not an SPF 4 or 8 or whatever it is - a decent one - one that WILL block the sun. Growing up on the prairies with the dry winters and long sunny days - it plays a number on your skin, regardless of age - but it definitely has taken a toll as we improve (notice I didn't say age?), and so a good cleanser, moisuturizer and sunscreen are essential! I use Cetaphil, both cleanser and moisturizer, rarely use any foundation and always use a sunscreen, at least a 30. And should summer ever get here, I'll go back to using the La Roche-Posay SPF 60 - which protects my face (and my tattoo) but still lets me get a bit of color! Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize - by whatever means you choose!

I didn't mention sun screen because 1) I have bad reactions to just about all of them on my face and 2) I just don't expose my face to the sun that often so it never really crossed my mind.
