Why is it acceptable for women to have sex toys, but not men?

I have recently bought a couple (a couple of sex toys, not 'a couple'), and its strange the reaction i get from my good mates when i tell them, compared to when i hear women talking about them openly......

Is it just that sex toys for men are seen as 'pervy' whereas sex toys for the lady folk are labeled as 'an aid'?

Its the whole ego trip thing. Men usually dont want to admit that they are not getting enough sex and that Rosey aint cutting it no more. Plus, men can usually orgasm without a sex toy, but it is harder for women. Remember, the first sex toys were vibrators for women thought to cure psychosis.

That may be true, but it still doesnt explain the disparity between the attitudes towards both....

..... And I agree with your first point especially

I can't think of a sex toy that's designed for a man's pleasure that I'd be all that interested in owning.

Those flesh light things are pretty cool...how about a****ring....butt plugs are for men too....

OP---I for one do not have an issue with men who have sex toys, and I have never been around some who has made a comment like you are describing. I think eventhough our society is trying to be open minded (well some people are) about some things, the whole macho attitude and masculinity comes in to play a lot.....Thats why lesbians or bisexual women or ok for most, but homosexual men are still not as accepted(Well at least not out here in the sticks by a lot, again not me)

If I knew a guy had a sex toy that he uses on himself, ie the fleshlight, I would kill myself laughing and think he was a loser.
Guys have hands and sticking out appendages, as as stated before can cum real easily (most of the time) If you have sexual dysfunctions then yep use toys. If you dont have a dysfunction use your hand
Women needs other things which is why sex toys are alright for them.

I do however think toys used between couples are brilliant as its about sexual adventure.

Using your logic, women should use their hands as well. May take longer and be less 'realistic' but eventually it would work...

What are the 'other things' that women need? Vibrators dont buy you flowers and do meals out the last time I checked ;)

very narrow minded veiw IMHO

I find it very erotic when a man has some toys and is willing to share the experience. I have only had one partner that was comfortable enough with himself that he readily admitted to having quite the collection.

We had so much fun exploring together and he even introduced me to a couple of toys that I hadn't thought of using myself.

If I were a man, I would get awfully tired of my using my hands all the time.... just as I like variety for my self-pleasuring moments, why wouldn't a man like some variety too? Kudos to you OP!

Hey, whatever floats yur boat, I say.

I think that it takes a certain comfort level w/your sexuality to buy sex toys. I'm 35 and bought my first vibrator about, um, 14 months ago I'd say. I thought about it before that. Even looked at them on the internet. But was WAY to chicken to buy one.

Not saying I didn't use toys, they were just the "found something around the house that'll work" kind. LOL Like the ol' vibrating toothbrush idea. Whatever.

Anyway, I'm a female and yes they are much more acceptable for females. So I can understand the shock your buds would exhibit. Although...I am betting a good 75% of the shock was that you'd actually admit it to them, not that you bought or enjoyed them.

I shared the suggestion of a "butterfly" on one of my boards on a non-dating website -mostly married moms there. I couldn't believe that a bunch of them replied with embarassment and shock that'd I'd "pubicly" suggest buying it. Go figure. Maybe just because I"m so "innocent" looking that I couldn't possibly have a sex drive.

Anyway, do what makes you happy. And if you think your buddies will be shocked, well, then don't discuss it with them!

I'm not sure why there is such a divide, to be completely honest with you. I do agree with the idea that men are more closed-minded about sex toys for boys because they may cast an unmanly message (the idea that you're not getting enough). While we all know that this could be further than the truth, and toys enhance so many things, sometimes it is an ego issue, and there isn't much logic to that.

I think that sex toys may be more necessary for more women to orgasm, and that is why many more women have embraced their sexuality, and sex toys in general. Many women cannot orgasm from vaginal sex, and need the aid of a sex toy to acheive climax, where as pretty much every man that I know can orgasm using either his right hand and/or vaginal sex. Special stimulation is not always required.

Women also, I feel, in general, may be more educated on the subject matter. Where I live, we have lots of fun toy parties, where all the ladies get together with wine and munchies, and a representitive from a local sex shop comes in and we get to learn and see all the different sex aids. We get to learn how they work, what they do, how to use them, and how to care/store them. I've not heard of men having anything similar-and I am a firm believer in the idea that knowledge breeds understanding.

Of course, I am speaking in general terms, and I myself find a man with sex toys to be an absolute turn on! I think it is great, OP, that you have embraced alternative metholdologies to stimulate yourself, and your friends really don't know what they are missing!

OP, I'm not quite sure what kind of sex toys for men you're talking about - the only things I can think of are sex dolls, or possibly vibrators for prostate pleasure. Sex toys for women are obvious - dildos or vibrators or vibrating dildos.

I really don't understand why a male version would be considered more "pervy" than a woman's version.

The sex doll thing, in my mind, is EXACTLY on par with a dildo. OK, the comical aspect I've seen on TV is a bit odd, but I'm going to assume there are "fake" vaginas that don't include stupid bodies and "faces," just as there are "fake" penises that don't.

In fact, it actually seems a bit more warped (in my mind), for a woman to use a dildo, because it's unfathomable that ANY woman couldn't find a willing man to give her penetration satisfaction, so those women are, in reality, rejecting a huge variety of flesh and blood penises for a slab of rubber or plastic. To me, that's quite, um, sexually dysfunctional. In a man's case, he's probably only SETTLING for the fakery because circumstances aren't giving him the option. Mind you, if he PREFERS it, he's equally warped (in my opinion) as the women who PREFER it.

Now if we're talking vibrators, that's a bit different. I assume a woman who uses one has difficulty climaxing without that intense stimulation. I also assume man would use one to achieve prostate pleasure, primarily because that's something (relatively) few women are willing to entertain. For a heterosexual man, that must be very frustrating. Using a sex toy in those cases, for either a woman or man, seems EXTREMELY reasonable.

for inquiring minds that want to know...... I think the OP is referring to the "pocket pussie"...............and for the record ! I myself personally never have seen one of these self indulging plastic contraptions.......lol!

anyways if you want to be good at some thing you have to practice daily.

wow im surprised at how many closed minded ,sexually uneducated older individuals there are on here... i guess having a best friend that works in an adult store opens ones eyes but hey man does it really matter if its acceptable or not? if you enjoy it good for you, you dont have to share it with anyone and everyone you know, its ofr your pleasure . anything that is used for sexual gratification will always be seen as "pervy" to someone , but really, who cares? youre not the one missing out, and if theyre not open minded enough to listen let alone understand and tickle the idea, theyre not missing out either

I think all men should have sex toys! It's a good idea! I would think it was cute. We already know they masturbate, so what do we care about how they masturbate?

Weird, I don't see any problem with it at all. I've owned a range of toys throughout the years, both for personal and couple use, and noone I know who knows I had them seems to have a problem with it. I suppose open sexuality in England is becoming less taboo though, so I can see why other cultures/generations have their own views on this, as it was/is seen as taboo in their eyes.

Although why it would be ok for women to use it but not men I find silly as per the "Carved in stone comment"

I'm sure I remember an article somewhere saying that there were dildos made of wax found in pyramids from the times of ancient egypt. Also knew that cucumbers were forbidden from turkish harems, unless thinly sliced!

Hmm, can't seem to find any information on the history of male sex toys, but im sure that****rings were involved back in the day, even if it was just a strip of leather tied round it!

In general, Simon say's a big and hearty "YES" to the casual use of sexual aides.

The first male sex toy I ever saw was an electric massage style vibrator called "The Virgin". It even had a fake hymen. (I have no idea what massage style means, company terminology.)

You plugged it into a wall outlet.

Do what now? After that I just ignored them. Have they invented anything not fundamentally stupid yet?

As for having them, I think it'd be ok actually. Provided they don't carry a significant risk of genital electrocution. Of course, I'm more likely to buy toys for use on my parnter then I am on me.

I used to use "props" i.e. everyday items lying about, with my parnters. After a number of injuries (all non sexual, had my eyebrow busted open by a belt for instance) I've concluded that "props" are a bad idea. Proffesionally made items should be used at all times. It'd be nice to switch roles and be the one using a toy on themselves for once.

Unless you plug the toy into a wall outlet.

I think there is absolutely no reason a man should not have sex toys - for his 'personal' use! They even make them specifically for men as well! The only problem I have is men who have sex toys to use on their 'dates' - not commited partners. I mean men should not bring out a 'used' sex toy to play with multiple women!!
I have an ex that has a few of my sex toys - I sure as heck hope he has NOT used them on other women!! If he has - shame on him and shame on the women who would let him!! Not a good way to keep people safe! Thank God I am healthy and clear of any illness - but who knows about the next - the next and the next that may have allowed the use of the 'used' toys!
