| Madrid Spain Posted: 3/2/2008 3:59:19 AM | Went there in July a few years back.
Easy city to walk around, but we got a one-day tourist bus ticket that does 3 different routes - you can jump on and off all day, to your hearts content.
Don't see how you can go there without going to the Prado, although my daughter preferred the other art gallery - think it's called the Reina Sofia (?).
We really liked hanging round Retiro park on the Sunday too - great boating lake to play on!
A nice tapas bar we went to was (I think - again!) called El Teatro - it's up near the posh shopping area.
It's just generally a nice city to loiter around. I learnt to have a map on show though when wandering on my own around the area we labelled 'Hooker's alley' - just so I wasn't approached for business! It's a road just off the Gran Via, if that's what floats your boat.

We often did tapas for dinner - comes free with your beer. The area is great and then, around 2:00 am, after a night of pubbing -you can end the evening with a bocadillo de calamares. Yum! Aproveche!

| Madrid Spain Posted: 3/3/2008 10:08:27 AM | | depending on the place you still get some food (olives, cheese, cured ham, etc) when asking for beer or red wine. it is a tradition of old, it comes from medieval times. | |

| Madrid Spain Posted: 3/3/2008 4:51:11 PM | Most of the on/off bus passes have to be purchased ahead of time in the states. At least, I know the longer passes do. Gosh, wish I could remember who all I booked through. The one day pass can be purchased usually where they sell newspapers and magazines in a store. Was only in Spain briefly. However, I had a travel agency that specialized in UK and most of Europe was the same when it came to those things. Have fun......hide your money.......and don't drink the water.... | |

| Madrid Spain Posted: 4/7/2008 7:55:09 PM | Go to the El Rastro fleamarket on Sunday in the Toledo/La Latina area. Just make sure to get there well before 2 pm, because it shuts right down, no messing about.
I found it a most enjoyable walk from Plaza Major down to the market.

| Madrid Spain Posted: 4/9/2008 5:02:34 PM | car rental in spain- I recommend car jet.com as aplace to book- you actually get the car from the local car hire outlet like hertz or edressa etc but you get abetter deal over the internet. I wouldnt drive in the city though its full of Spanish drivers! try the Lomu ham - its rather special- Marques de caceres Rioja and ask at the butchers what restauarnts to go to in the evening! | |

| Madrid Spain Posted: 4/10/2008 4:33:50 PM | In answer to Pedro. The driving skills I have seen displayed in Madrid is a very aggressive style and speeding seems to be the norm- perhaps all major cities are like this though. I spent alot of time in rural parts of Spain and i have also seen alot of drink driving- you are about to tell me alot of english do that but I know that Spain has the accepted drink driving mentallity that was common in the UK in the 70's certainly the islands do. and yes I still love Spain- Salamanca, Bilbao, Santander, Galicia Ibiza, Majorca are all fantastic places my favourite being - forget that! possibly Altea and even Benidorm(the old town) where the english havent taken over! but I just wish we had proper Tapas, sobrasadas and Horchaterias in the UK! | |
