Ok im not saying this because im sicilian but if you wanna travel to a nice desination, sicily is the SPOT! The water at the beaches are so beautiful, nice blue color, the mountains provide nice scenary, and at night the stars are just so bright you its like you can see the whole universe.. i just love the culture, the people, the food, perfect spot to just go for a couple of weeks and relax... now i wanna go back talking about it!

Ohhhhhhhhhhh! don't say things like that!!

I just loved the Med & all I want to do is go back with a Motorcycle & tent & island hop all around that region!
The ferries are great, they cruise up to the wharf drop the loading ramp down & you roll off, all in minutes. It's a bit like a big bus. I loved cruising on those ferries.

Is Sicily very expensive?

Ok,
I'm not one for the fancy lifestyles, have much more fun meeting locals & kicking around with them. Would it be on par with the rest of Western Europe as far as food / accommodation etc?
I found the Greek Isles pretty good, once you're out of the tourist traps & it's not peak season.

I've always wanted to go to Syracuse and visit the sights. I'm writing a piece of historical fiction that takes place in Sicily, so I'm dying to visit!

I am thinking of taking a trip to Greece in June. Any suggestions on where I should stay. I hate the touristy area's. I would prefer to rent an apt and do my own thing. You know, make my own tours on my own time. When I travel I like to meet and live like a local.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey there Jbooz, I couldn't agree with you more. The Mediterranean is awesome, the beaches and the food!!! Of course I am bias because I am Sicilian too. I haven't been to the Southern tip of the island though, maybe next time. Cefalu and Taormina are great places to sight see, and the history in Syracuse and Palermo is amazing, Greeks, Romans, Arabs all rolled up into one island!

Got a question booz. Did you spend any time living there? Reason I ask is because a guy who runs this pizza shop came from Palermo a couple years ago and he misses it dearly. He misses everything you have said including the women.

I am still considering at some point in the future of maybe moving there. I can get my citizenship through my blood line. I know the jobs aren't so great in the South but the food, relaxing life style and the women I am willing to go there for all of that.

Sicily has the best preserved outdoor ampitheatres from ancient Greek times. If an actor stands on the central stone, everyone in the seats can hear it if he whispers. No one is quite sure how this works. It would be quite amazing to see a performance there, with the sea as the stages backdrop.

I lived in Sicily for 3 years (Sigonella/lived in Misterbianco), The must see places are Siracusa, Agrigento (Valley of the Gods), Taormina/Giardini Naxos, and one of my favorite places was Acireale (just north of Catania). My favorite uniquely sicilian places to eat were the Panini stands (possibly the best drunk food ever)... just beware that these stands offer horse meat as well (decent taste, a little tough). I will say the food is certainly different that what you might expect, definately still good. It will definately help if you know a decent bit of Italian and even better if you can speak Sicilinau. I had an absolute blast there, oh and if you do any driving across the country side beware of the sheep.

Great tips Will.

I'm thinking of a trip to Sicily in November for a week or so. Which of those cities is the most affordable for hotels? (Though it sounds like you probably had an apartment or stayed with a family).

Also, for trips to Italy I like www.venere.com for hotels. Do you have a favorite site? In smaller towns, their options are slim.

I did have an apartment. I would suggest you look into the bed and breakfasts... I found them to be cheaper than hotels and a considerably more enjoyable experience. I never really used any of them in Sicily as I lived there, but I did use them almost everywhere else I went in Italy and Europe while I was there.

A key thing to note is that Hotels and B&B's charge by the person, not necessarily the room and frown on having guests of any sort. Also do not expect an American style Hotel with a large room and bed. It is very common to have only slightly more than the necessities and a single bed in any hotel below a 4 star (and even some of them).

As for what city would be cheaper, I really don't know for certain. However you shouldn't have to many problems finding places to stay. If you give me a specific city I can send a few emails and find out from a few friends where the good places are to stay in that particular city.

If you stay primarily in the cities of Catania, Palermo, or Siracusa you shouldn't need a car for the majority of your time there as most things are either a short walk of bus ride away. Public transit is cheap and fairly reliable there. You might not want to drive in the cities anyway, Italian driving can be quite intimidating to the average American. If you do rent a car, I hope you can drive a stick because you will have a heck of a time finding an automatic (I really doubt it's possible).
