Accents...turn on or off? and other questionsPage 1 of 7    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Do you like a guy with an accent? Can you picture yourself spending your life with a guy with an accent? Do you think it's cute? Do you think it's a kind a weakness? Would you mind the occasional mistakes? Would you be glad to take the time to listen or would it simply get on your nerves?

Which accents do you prefer if any?

Thanks for your opinions!

I am an American who took the required "two years" of foreign language in high school. I took French. Not that anyone in the USA speaks french...its just that I thought it sounded so much fun to say "je taime".....

What a waste of two years of my time.
I went to Europe, and had forgotten all but a few words. I was AMAZED and soooooo admiring of the fact that all the people I ran into in Europe spoke not only the language of their country, but usually the language of a couple other countries as well, as well as American! I felt very inferior, to be honest.

I think that anyone who comes to America from another country and manages to grasp enough of our language to actually communicate...in writing, at the grocery, in stores, paying taxes, at work, or whatever....DESERVES OUR UTMOST ADMIRATION AND RESPECT! And if they make a few mistakes now and then, it is ENDEARING. And I LOVE to hear the accents.....

Anyone who treats a foreign person with derision for not speaking "American" perfectly, is a pretentious a$$. And to be perfectly honest, foreign people....if someone gives you a hard time or puts you down for not knowing American....they are doing it to build themselves UP, and to try to tear you DOWN. Just consider the source. A good person will not do this to you.

I only have problems with people from other countries that MOVE HERE TO LIVE, and refuse to try to learn the language. I am sorry...you move here? You learn how to speak American. Just like if one of us moves over to Europe, we better learn how to speak the language....even though most Euro's speak American. It's called "respect for your host country".

My favorite accent? RedCassandra's of course! LOL

Scot, Irish, Spanish or French. I live in the south and can't stand a redneck country accent. I have a southern accent but I do pronounce my words correctly.

I have friends from all over the world, many with accents, and many make grammar mistakes and use more formal words rather than slang. It's neither attractive nor unattractive-- it just is.

It's funny... when I talk to ladies in the US, they all claim I have an accent. :p

Of course, my friends all say I have an English accent... though, I don't hear it myself.

A lot of ladies seem smitten by my accent for some reason. Which, isn't so bad in itself. But, I'd rather a lady is interested in me because of me, and not just because I sound "different". :p

You're right. But even if we have the best intentions our subconscious will always associate something to a given accent. eg a british accent-sophisticated, german-rude, some are associated with poverty, romance...Most people know it's just BS and stereotypes, some don't...but I think we all have this sort of feeling in our subconscious.

I think having a slight French (quebec) accent outside of Canada could be something girls like. But I feel that here in Canada it has a bad connotation. I feel that people are for one thing used to it and also that they think it goes with sovereignty and the likes.

Any Canadians could confirm that? What do you think when you hear someone from Quebec? who knows how to speak English that is.

I am British-born, raised in Canada, living temporarily in New Zealand and married to a South African. Believe me when I say that you get used to the different accents after a while.
I do get surprised sometimes, though, when someone remarks on my accent.

I don't at all think that there is a bad connotation with being a Canadian with a French accent. There are many communities outside of Quebec with people who have French as their mother tongue. Just as there are communities that speak other languages - including the languages you seem to disparage.
Unless you actually ask the person, it is difficult to tell whether he came from Quebec or elsewhere.

I kinda have this strange German /Canadian/ hick thing going on. Oh ya you know its sexy lol.

"Is that an accent? ...pardon me while I undress!"

Almost any western European accent, I'm gonna throw russian in there too, is hot to me. German, polish, british, french, italian, you name it I think it's hot! Eastren accents, like arab, african, or asian accents just bug me because I can't fully comprehend what they're saying, but I do get that with scottish accents too...ah well.

A nice southren drawl is always nice too...

Accents make you interesting purely on the level of you being from somewhere else and therefore have a different world view and experiences. For myself I don't get the idea of accents being sexy. It's wierd when people do that. They don't even look at the character of that person.

It's on the same level as finding someone sexy because of his tan, style, hair, anything. It's just one trait that's one piece of the big picture I guess. It's as legitimate but not as widespread. We have to learn how to deal with what we have. That's sad but every guy has to know what his assets are. We don't judge with our brain however smart we may be. Sad but true. Very sad lol. Otherwise, sexy ones will always come first. The disparity would be even bigger if we couldn't use things like these to our advantage. If you don't have it to start with, either you die alone or you learn to find what you're good at and that girls like. You can dress well, get rich, get fit, be funny, be romantic,...

I'm just trying to find what could make me more attractive lol! I just got a giant brain...

American??????????????

I know what you mean, I felt the same when I first read it, but on further thought, it's odd that speaking our common language isnt referred to as American by Americans and English by the English. I suppose the latter also forgets the Irish, Welsh and Scots though... an odd thing I think....

OT - I love eastern european accents - a Russian (origin) accent whispering in my ear... oh yessss...

I am so glad the world is made up of people with so many different opinions as I really really dont get the German accent.

lol....I messed up. I should have said that over there you speak "English".....I'm sorry. Over HERE what we speak is "American" because what YOU speak over there *is* English...but what is often passed off as "English" over here, is really "American"....with a lot of bas*tardizing and lack of correct pronounciation.

Don't be offended...its more of a put down to us than anything. :-) xoxoxxo
