Many of you have heard of the Vancouver author, Eckhart Tolle, who wrote The Power of Now and other books. His newest book is called A New Earth. Oprah loves it and is promoting it in her book club. Even better - if you are a Tolle fan or an Oprah fan - you can have lessons on how to .......I am not exactly sure what. The lessons are free and on Oprah's website. Has anyone read A New Earth? What do you think of Eckhart Tolle?

Personally, I found The Power of Now challenging. Tolle seems to complicate a very simplistic way of being if you ask me. So what are your thoughts?

What do you think of Oprah? I am beginning to find her annoying because she is just too politically correct. (I know her fans are not going to be happy with me. Saying anything bad about Oprah is almost sacrilegious.)

(How is it that 15 people haved viewed this thread when I keep using my 15 minute editing option?)

Never read Eckart Tolle...and who is Oprah?

But have you read "The Life of Pi"? That was a great read.

The Power of Now is remarkable, as is 'A New Earth'. It is true however that, while Tolle extolls learning to live without so much intellectual thinking, he is a Cambridge educated intellectual!

I am with you on Oprah - not re:PC, but elitist & high on herself, lacking humility. I don't like the way she continually interjects and projects onto what people are saying.

Thanks - I found someone who doesn't believe Oprah is GOD!

I think Oprah may think she is just a little bit too interesting. I suffered through her episode on her road trip with her best friend Gail while I was getting a pedicure. It was one big commercial for some type of car she was driving. And really who cares about 2 loud women on a road trip?

I'm not an Oprah fan but because I generally have the TV on when making my suppers I usually have it tuned to Oprah because I can hear it from the living room when in the kitchen. It is the kind of broadcast I can still appreciate without having to see it... it is a talk show.

As Xavery pointed out, she has done a lot of self-promotion stuff. Gag!!

However often she has wonderful guests, especially on health. Today Dr. Oz was on (he is such a wealth of good health information).

He reported a study showed that a daily diet of 11 pounds, yes ELEVEN POUNDS, of fruit and vegetables, focusing on nutrition, (not calorie counting) yielded significant improvements is lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, weight loss, and I think I heard loss of tummy fat too. Most of us with "middle-age spread" get encouragement from hearing that.

I saw that. Her attitude was that of a rich spoiled diva. Her opinion of herself I agree could handle some humility. Don't get me going! I'm watching Deepak Chopra right now who is talking about not judging anything.

I read The Power of Now about ten years ago. I really like the way Eckhart Tolle took complicated, spiritual subjects and simplified them into lessons one could actually apply to their lives. I'm reading A New Earth now and am getting the same reaction. He's a gifted writer and a great spiritual teacher. I think I appreciate him because I've slogged through some not so gifted teachers in other books.

Also read The Life of Pi and really enjoyed it - especially the part where the rabbi's and the priests meet up with each other at the market and extoll the virtues of their gifted student, Pi. Quite hilarious!

Spiritual reading is a bit of a minefield I think - there's a lot out there, and a lot of it is not good. Then there's stuff that speaks to you and stuff that doesn't.

I've been practicing yoga for about 4 years. It's the same class every time - same suggestions for postures, same explanations for what you need to do and what is happening to you while you are doing it. It never ceases to amaze me how a new teacher says the same thing, only I hear it differently from them. All of a sudden, it's like I'm hearing it for the first time. The oddest sensation of deja vu and discovery simultaneously. I think spiritual reading and pratice is very similar. You hear it from different authors, but finally you find the one who speaks to YOU and it's like hearing it for the first time.

I'm with Tyee on Dr Oz - he is just a fabulous example of integrative medicine, which is so necessary to transform traditional nedical practice that is lacking in many ways. I did see the 'Eating Like Gorillas' segment, which was amazing.

Oprah does feature terrific people, but needs to het her ego out of the way - it isn't appealing.

Having just listened to the first installment of this series (the feed was interrupted repeatedly on Monday night) I have to say I agree with several people posting here that Oprah's ego needs to get out of the way.

It was almost painful to listen to her ramble on and on about her awakening. I really want to hear Tolle! Even when she asks him a question, it goes on and on about this and that, because and if, and then .... enough already!

Tolle is ever the gentleman, patiently waiting for her to finish, and maybe my ego is in the way here but I just want to yell "shut up and let him talk!" For heaven's sake there is only 90 minutes and I can hear you every day at 4pm but the opportunity to hear him is extremely limited so please don't waste it!

I read The Power of Now and A New Earth, and found that the first book is about what to do to find peace, and dare I say it...happiness, enlightenment.

The second book seems to be more about how to do it, like a practical guide, and I know some people who have found it more helpful than the first book. It has been about 2 years since I read either, but I found it very useful for becoming more grounded and conscious, and I still use the practice of trying to be present.

I like his books and teachings and I think they appeal to my professional side because they offer a logical perspective on spirituality, and not the blind faith perspective of traditional spirituality.

BTW, I tried to read The Power of Now about five years ago and couldn't, I think because I wasn't ready to take it all in. Not everyone is at a place where it will make sense to them, or resonate with them and I certainly wasn't there until a couple of years ago.

I haven't read The Power of Now but it's on my 'books I wanna read' list. (a list I created from the posts on another thread)

Yes!! I've read all of Tolle's books and really believe that if everyone implemented his teachings that there would be peace on earth and no need for psychotherapists! Check out also the 10 free "New Earth" podcasts on Oprah.com. They've really helped me to navigate the pitfalls of my 5-month separation. I'm glad to know that there are other awakened souls on POF. Consciousness is definitely an important trait that I would look for in my next partner. It also connected me back to my Christian faith. If the Bible is the "why and what" to believe, Presence is the "how" to implement it. And, yes, Oprah does try to steer the discussions in order to fit them into 90-minute segments, but I just see it as an experienced moderator trying to cover most of the important points. You can always pause the podcast to contemplate the deeper meanings. I've seen Youtube excerpts of Tolle with no or different moderators and it's easy to see that Oprah does a much better job with Tolle's complex subject matter.

After a friend told me how much more she is at peace with her life after reading Tolle's "New Earth" I bought it too. I gave up after the first few pages.

I then learned of Colin Tipping's book "Radical Forgiveness" and friends that have read both of these books tell me the latter is a far better book.

I'm still reading it and while I recognize my assessment is based on incomplete evaluation, I concur, it is better.

X: I’ve bought the book NEW EARTH….

I have a habit of buying ‘fav’ books and putting them on a shelf till I find I need spiritual enlightenment…lol I will be reading bits n pieces of EARTH over the summer. Will give you a review when its done…hehhee

Personally, I found The Power of Now challenging. Tolle seems to complicate a very simplistic way of being if you ask me. So what are your thoughts?

I found I had to read “The Power of Now” a couple of times decades ago as it is quite ‘detailed’. Think I will dust it off and read as a primer again before reading The New Earth.

My main reason for posting is in defence of Oprah….I am very much a FAN of her….lol

Lol Politically Correct….that is too funny!

Oprah tends to break rules of PC supporting her beliefs with reasons specific to her. She is fully aware of the impact she has on people. She definitely is not insulting like some people I’ve come to know. I think what scares critics of Oprah is that she has integrity – truth, honesty with humbling insecurities she is willing to be open about; raw to the core that it’s difficult for people to fathom. Would that be the PC you talk of X?????

I am truly humbled with people who speak ‘their’ truth in the “right” way. I’ve heard Oprah talk or say the ODD comment I might not agree with - at the same time, I value how it may have impacted me and what I have yet to learn with reference to acceptance or acknowledging wisdom life afforded me.

Only Possibilities:

I have seen a couple of programs where she ‘interjects and projects onto what people are saying’. In those specific times I had wished her producers corrected her with some kind of followup. Because of her influence, I tend to think she may have impacted others without question.

I don’t think she is ‘elitist’ or ‘high on herself’ n ‘lacking humility’.
I sense the above needs some elaboration…I question how you came to the conclusions.

Self promotion you say or commercials for a car?

Minimizing and smacking someone’s persona really questions ones’ personal integrity yes?

Time to be introspective and search out what really impacts you as an individuals with ref to Oprah and not these superficial justifications…lol GAG…

Oprah is big on product placement. I remember her driving a car with her bestfriend, Gail. They kept mentioning the brand of the car.

I too stopped liking Oprah. It was kind of like when I stopped believing in Santa, a disappointment and a shock. I used to love Oprah, but then she became predictable, boring. The Oprah show became like a story with a predictable plot because I always knew what she was going to say. I find her a little annoying, too.

Eckart Tolle . . . I tried to understand him. I had the CDs to the Power of Now and they just did not gel with me. I don't think he is meant to be easy to understand, but I have met people who say they totally understand him.

Okie Dokie.....just throwing this out there....why not shut off the telly... I love Oprah.. I really do...she is entertaining...the shows can be entertaining.
Eckhart...well he might be on to something..but...hey...let's go out and practice a bit of what he is preaching ...and making a lot of money at btw....let's all go out there and examine our own life.

I really don't think we need to go buy a book to do this now.

Well for those of you who love pen and paper...journalling... I know I do...love a new leather bound journal...an a fab pen of course.

Or those of you who like paperless way and prefer to journal on the computer...go for it.

so...here we go...
Start a 366 Day Journal.
Log everything for a whole year.
Well not everything..but say... a few key categories...same every day for a year.

AM - How do you feel when you wake?:
Noon - have you pissed off anyone ?:
Afternoon - any accomplishments you want kudos for?:
PM - How was your day?:

Okay.... so...only like one or two word answers for AM, Noon and PM.
A sentence only for Afternoon.

One year later go back to Day 1 and review.....see if you have changed from a year ago.
Are you the same old person?... not learned anything?... still in your routine cycle?
Are you a better person? Have you been paying attention to what your life has been like in the past year?

so there you go... 366 days to observe your life and make observations.
Free from Rose...no need to go out and buy any self-help books or to even thank me.

For the last year or so I would go to my favourite Starbucks and people would say you have to read this book'The Power of Now". I didn't pay much attention to it until one day I finally read a few pages and quickly realized that it was quoting the bible etc. I think God works it great ways. After talking to people I realized this guy most likely is a proffit. He spreads the good word in a different way. It really amazes me that all of that is in the BIble but yet if I mention the bible to people they get so turned off. Everyone is reading all these personal developement books and really it is all in the bible but if it workss for you read "The Power of Now" Keep reading books by this author as God is working in you.

I realized this guy most likely is a proffit.

I'm not intending to criticize your spelling here, but since some people will intentionally misspell a word to make a point, I have to ask.

Did you mean "prophet" or someone making a profit like those televangelists do?

Actually I didn't intentionally mispell the word but at the same time I guess I wasn't thinking very wiserman like. I admit my foolish mistakes. Now miss kitty , books are great. I hear this argument often which you brought up. Oprah is a wonderful human being and actually I would question why anyone would want to put down such a wonderful person. Is she perfect? Well who is. She is a much better humam being than me. Back to book writing Miss Kitty. I guess if you wrote a book and sold 3 million copies that would be ok thou wouldn't it. And if you made 250 million a year that would be ok wouldn't it. Go Oprah go. I am very thankful we have someone like her around.

Have a great weekend you POF's.

Help me, please. I don't "get it".
Why .... oh, why???? .... how come, ..... when someone posts in any given Thread and
totally "dares" to mention (Heaven help me!) words ie: Bible, God, ..... sure as shyte
another poster pops up! with the comment that perhaps they should depart to another Forum??? It's as though there is a lot of fear, out there.

What, exactly, am I supposed to be afraid of mis~fit? It's always interesting with Christians and the like assume that just because someone doesn't wish to have their home forum flooded with religious propaganda and has thought that a thread be better served in a forum devoted to such topics, that - oh my god - they must have fear. Fear of what, exactly, though?

I'm abundantly certain that the very people in awe of so-called God's word and whatnot would be the first ones, too, if a topic came up that happened to mention Allah, or Buddha, or the Goddess, they would be suggesting it be moved to the appropriate forum. In fact, I'm almost positive it's happened before. So tell me, is there "fear" there or would you just be doing your forum-ly duties? Don't answer, I'm pretty sure I know what you'd say anyway.

On topic, books like A New Earth, The Secret, etc. are really just regurgitating old ideas with better writing styles. There's nothing new in any of these books and the authors are getting rich off their unoriginality. Too, I almost always am disappointed in the disdainful, even slightly mocking tone taken by the authors to those of us who don't want to be "awakened" to their specific beliefs.

Wiserman, I never really said anything about Oprah. I quoted someone else who said much of what I feel. Frankly, Oprah's probably a nice person - she's worked hard to get where she is and she's over come many obstacles but that doesn't mean I have to automatically like her and think she's the cat's meow. She does have a tendency to spew out stuff like this and many people, unable to think for themselves, follow her blindly. Just because people do follow her, doesn't make her right. What happened to the rats after the Pied Piper was finished with them?

What I find amusing about Eckhart is that he keeps his lover/partner/something in a separate condo in the same building he lives in. Apparently he likes his space and privacy and can indulge it.

Cheers,
Mike (makes separate bedrooms look intimate)
