Apparently in some places, it already IS over $4.
And it may not stop at just $4.
Do you think this will spark you to conserve?

Posted: 3/4/2008 9:40:09 AM | I'm thinking that I am going to be doing a lot less driving...and not dating anyone who doesn't live within 25 miles or less 
I drive my son to school every day, it's 20-25 minutes each way, so that is almost one and a half hours round trip a day, might be time to put him on the bus....
Could be worse, I could be driving a Expedition, Escalade or a Hummer, now that would really hurt at the pump! | |

I can only guess why it's $4.oo plus a gal.
We are in a war,, spending trillions of dollars,, the government, supports these prices. because, they make more on taxes,, to spend on the war.. (send our troops home)
We should be taking the oil from Iraq, as long as we are there fighting and defending, what ever it is we are really there for anyway.. yet we can't do that because of OPEC.. and what other countries might think of us as a country,, so again the American people must suffer...
Or is it to pay for the tax rebates we are supposed to receive.. I think that too.
The government,, has a way of fooling/misleading the American people, take the lottery for example,, that was designed to supplement the schools in this country,, yet all that has done was to divert money from the school systems.. the federal government took advantage of this, by lowing federal aid to the states, hence the states have lower there contributions to schools districts, because of the trickle down affect..
I believe the same holds true to, health care and social security,,
Soon the American dream will be crushed, as the US government, (we the people, should be in control of and are not) forces industry to leave this country, the small businesses close because of standards and laws opposed upon us by our rich government and it partners.. Government will soon be controlled by corporations it now sleeps with. As the world turns in to a feeding ground for the rich, as you and I are left, just to put food on our tables, as more and more of us became homeless...

Don't yield for pedrestrians and bicyclists, I'm tired of being run into the curb or having to try and move quicker for these jacka** drivers...I used to drive when it was 3.50 a gallon about a year or so ago but my car went to cr*p..Riding a biycyle is better. | |

It would be nice to go back to 4 dollars a gallon here. 112.9 a litre with 4.5 litres to a gallon ( for the new mathies in the crowd, that's over 5 bucks. close to 5.10). In '06 I was paying 89.9 a litre which works out to 4.05 a gallon. Our gallon's a bit bigger than the US gallon. Too bad wages didn't necessarily increase for everyone by that same 20%.
Waxing nostalgic for a moment, when I was kid, dad used to send me to the store on my bike with the gas can and 50 cents to fill up the can for the lawnmower. i always got to buy either a dime chocolate bar or a ten cetn bottle of pop or bag of chips with that dime.
Spiderman comics were 8 cents then. | |

The warp speed changing world is a high speed horse race full of strong, fast horses. It is impossible to stumble and fall in this race for 8 years, and then expect to catch the front runners. Can't be done. | |

Posted: 3/4/2008 11:25:31 AM | There is no reason for the price in the UK with North Sea Brent right in the backyard; rediculous! But consider a couple of items in comparing fuel costs in the two countries. I am in the UK frequently to visit family. A) I have never needed a vehicle due to the superior public transport system in the UK.
B) There are many high mileage vehicles availible in the UK that will return 50MPG.
C) The US has never really addressed the public transport issue, and has let detroit off the hook in continuing to make 10MPG monsters.
D) It is possible for a driver to make 50 miles for $8-10 in the UK. That same distance covered in the US can cost as much as $17 to $20.
E) There are many alternative vehicles in the US that are either very high mileage, or not dependent on oil at all. These are not being brought to market due to big oil lobbies buying whomever they need, and the broken legal system which stifles all innovation and invention for fear of litigation. The broken legal system is a topic all its own....... | |

Okay seriously... what I think is it will of course make the cost of everything else rise, (as it has been doing), and I don't see any way around it; a major recession.
That's just my own personal take on it.
No one I know will agree with me on that.
I have a feeling I'm gonna be sittin' here watching it happen, though.
I own a mini-van. This would NOT be my choice of vehicle if I had it any other way.
I need that sliding door behind the driver.. so I can stand and lift my entire chair up into/through that door.
But... the cost of gas.... means I limit my driving.
I wish.. really wish... I could drive a scooter. Oh I know I "can" drive one, I just don't know what I'd do once I got to my destination, LOL! | |

Seriously folks. It's simple economics and has NOTHING to do with Bush. Supply and demand. China and India, among others, are gobbling up resources as they build their infrastructures and businesses. More demand=higher prices.

However, there's no reason it will stop at $4 and as it's more than that basically everywhere else in the world (incl $10 UK, $8-10 in Europe, $6.50 in Aus... was $4 in Africa 20 years ago !) frankly America may simply be getting it's long overdue incentive to seriously look at more efficient cars, public transport, fuels, energy..and for that matter people.
I am not here to America-bash, but with 2/3 of adult Americans now clinically obese (that's double what it was 20 years ago), and consuming as a country 70% or more of the energy used in the world each year, at some point habits are going to have to change, aren't they ?

Insurance companies ,oil companies .and the medical industry talk about robbers and the American people let it go on and on saying nothing just pay and go , with in the next 2 years we will see a depression like no other there will be a food shortage clothing shortage gas and all the products we use money will be worthless . we see it on sifi movies well it is here and growing more people need to wake up and take America back ,but they wont they call us hot heads or rebels .what are they going to call us when this comes to pass | |

Posted: 3/4/2008 2:29:29 PM | well... many people will blame the gov for the high gas prices, but in reality the price of oil is determined by the free market. it is a publically traded commodity. with the increased demand coming from china and india, as they strugle industrualize, we will only see more competition in this arena in the future. in otherwords, there aint a lot that can be done about it. china right now subsidises thier gasoline, and what do we do? why, we take something that is already expensive and add a huge tax on it! sure that will keep people from buying it as much... but what about those of us who have no choice?
for example... i HAVE to drive to school every single day. i spend about two hours a day in the car driving. there is NO public trans out here in the cultural abyss that is the sticks. rural illinois is so spread out, and it sucks that i am spending so much on gas! but the thing is, i have no choice. i can't move, can't walk, and i certainly can't car pool very easily either. i have a tight schedule between work and scshool that it is difficult to syncronize with other students. besides, there just aren't that many commuters from the area that i happen to live. dreadful!
but personal use is one thing... what about the increased cost of shipping, and the resulting increased cost of food items, and other neccesities?
don't know what can be done about it... it jsut seeems to be getting worse and worse..

Oh yeah right, so we're going to start jogging down the highway to work instead of driving? What does obesity in a country have to do with energy consumption in a country, seriously? Australia, by the way, has been growing very fast in obesity.. so it holds true for them too? | |

It will continue this way if people don't slow their consumption in protest and conservation. The passivity surrounding this issue amazes me.
The Iraqs can't help us. Their refineries were bombed by them and us so the infrastructure to delivery is seriously prohibited.
How many of you are still guzzling it up?
 Wanna do something? Carpool, combine your trips. write your senator, ride a bike, use public transportation, walk, buy a hybrid. | |
