WALLYS BURGERS is closing down

ya, it's a greasy burger joint. BUT it is a part of vancouvers history. And it is closing down at the end of March. There was a big Car show all along that strip of Kingsway for it's 30th anniversary a while back. My uncles and cousins are in a bunch of car clubs, and they are trying to organize a big show to bid farewell to WALLYS BURGERS, and the infamous Chuck Wagon. A lot of people from Vancouver grew up around WALLYS, and know how big of a role that place once played in the vancouver muscle car/hot rod scene. I'll post more as I hear about it. I just heard this news last night:(

First Rodeo Burgers out near Cloverdale is closed to make way for a mall... and then Wally's... seems the only old style independant burger place is on Edmonds in Burnaby (can't remember the name)...

Suppose that is what they call progress...
or a sign of the times.

Memory of Wally's....
My sister is 16 years older than me and my nephews and I are only 3 and 5 years apart in age.... back in the olden days... I think I must have been around 8 or 9 and Wally's Burgers had one night a week when you could get 5 burgers for a buck, 5 orders of fries for a buck, and 5 drinks for a buck. My sister and brother-in-law would load us kids (extended family living together on Grant Street near Semlin Drive) and go up Kingsway for this fabulous treat.

Good childhood memories...Thanks to Wally's Burgers!

Thanks for the heads up, guess I have gotta go get my last Wallys before they shut down. As for Lost in the 50's I don't think their burgers where all that good myself.

Here I got all excited when I initially read the subject. Thought it said "WallyWorld is closing down". I figured, wow, if Wal-Mart is closing its doors the economic ripples would be felt around the world.

Then I cleaned the yogurt off my eye glasses (sorry FunnyAndSweet, couldn't resist) and realized it was just a burger joint I've never heard of. Evidently a good one too. Another victim of the burger franchises no doubt.

the food's not that special anymore
the shakes aren't that great, and the burgers are greasy
but it's the nostalgia factor of "Wallys"
I was never around in its "hey-day" when guys would gather there for stoplight races in the old muscle cars. But I'm sure the BCHRA(BC Hot Rod Association) will host something there to commemorate the history of WALLYS
I know I've got an old burgandy WALLYS BURGERS tshirt somewhere in this mess I call my room

Hi Everyone!

I have alot of memories of Wally's Burgers, as I worked there in the early 80's from age 14-17. People loved the mushroom burgers, onion rings and the milkshakes. We wore orange T-shirts with Wally's Burgers on the front. I have happy memories of my first job, but I am sad to see it closing.

Wally's Burgers had the best burgers in town and we used to go to them all the time in the early 80's when my boyfriend lived that way. Since then, I have only been a handful of times and they were still pretty awesome. Wish I could have had the chance to go and have one last burger. I am sure it will be missed!

When I lived in Vancouver I went to Wallys for a agood burger every few months... They have changed owners over the years but the burgers, etc, are or were still the best...

Another great Burger place in Vancouver was the Texan... They were located on Broadway off Oak St... I was dissapointed when they closed...

Of course White Spot still has great burgers but they were better years ago...

I never admitted it at the time this was posted, but I have lived in Vancouver most of my life and I have never been to Walleys. I hope you people all got over it. I don't remember the Texan on Broadway and Oak, but I remember a place near Stanley Park with a similar name and they had the best burgers for only a nickel.

Wally's and King's burgers were east end institutions and I would hazard a guess part of almost every kids life.
Dad and I would hit there, or he would drive alllllllllll the way out to Burnaby on Kingsway to go to the Rickshaw restaurant for Chinese, or up on Fraser Street to Jon's pizza.
They were all great places and all gone.

This thread was started months before I came back to POF, so I never even knew it existed 'til now.

I remember when I first heard Wally's would be closing, I literally cried. I have basically lived in this neighbourhood my entire life, so needless to say, Wally's hold many childhood and teenage memories for me, as well as some more recent ones. Naturally, my family and I had to walk over and have that one last burger before it closed. My son had to have one of everything.

I've yet to find anything that compares to the Chuckwagon burger.

Bye Wally's Burgers .. thanks for the memories

Hmmm I was in Vancouver at the time you mentioned it was closing and if I knew I would have went there.Memories : Wow Wally's is gone huh. Lot's of time spent there and at the Texan Burger near Stanley Park and the one in Surrey on King George Hwy.
And yes the burgers as a kid were a nickel a piece then they dropped to 4 cents when McDonald's in Surrey opened at 5 cents and 6 cents for a cheese burger.
We all thought it was Highway robbery when they ended up at 10 cents LOL.

We even had Texan Burgers at our elementary school on certain days of the month just like hot dog days for PTA fundraisers .The way to minimize the parent s volunteering for Hot Dog Duty. Two burgers for a dime 5 for a quarter. Then McDonald's offered more money to the PTA and it was Mickey D's from then on .Sort of helped kill the Texan chain as Mickey D's took the school business from what Texan created in Vancouver and Surrey.
Rodeo Burger as mentioned was a good one too. But The Round Up Cafe in Surrey was better than most of them .But not to forget The Dog and Suds in Surrey with their coney burger ,or coney fries,or coney dogs. And in Surrey two other great burger joints were The Chuckwagon that lasted just a couple of years .Very Short lived with the giant Chuckwagon and the giant Chuckwagon Driver across from Surrey Place and the other was The Roy Rogers with their roast beef sandwiches and burgers and ice cream sundae bar.
And another great independent was the Kalmar towards Newton where I had to have a Hawaiian Burger and their homemade giant Cinammon buns.
The Chuckwagon Burger definitely was quite the burger at Wally's.
Oh and Triple O's at White Spot were good if you liked gooey but that was back when burgers tasted like burgers .Okay cannot forget the cute carhops at A&W as well as Dog and Suds.

Well I can only imagine what people will feel when Peter's in Calgary bites the dust .
Hopefully that will never happen.

Memories of the food and family and the dates and so much more .hmmmmmm

Yes King's was great too forgot about that one.

Another great one I just remembered was off 96 avenue and Scott Road (120 th Street)
on the Delta side of Scott Road.
It reminded you of a old Dairy Queen But I think it was called the Luxury Freeze or something but it was there for years .
Then at 88 ave and Scott for years was the Patio which had great burgers too until The Patio burned down; it was where Taco Time is today .

Does anyone remember the Wagon Ho restaurant?
There was one at Pemberton and Marine in North Van...the building was great from the outside....never ate there though. It was a big chuckwagon with this huge Cowboy sitting on the seat with the reins in his hands...man it was big!

closed down...not sure how long it was up...MacDonalds bought the site...took off the wagon...cowboy gone...and the flat roof and building were perfect.

man...it was a great looking thing...BIG...BIGGGGGG!... I was real little then...it impressed me.
