Adware issue with IM feature
Posted: 3/4/2008 10:33:57 PM
I happened to be looking at some profiles tonight and saw someone mention they will no longer use the IM feature because they got a virus/adware on their computer. I wanted to be sure you were aware that this is an issue because i recently got the smitfruad virus/adware while using your IM feature. I have read a bit on the forums about peoples links or images containing vairous malware, but i didnt have any profiles up at the time i received the IM. I was able to get rid of the the problem after about 2 days, but it was NOT a fun two days.
I did want to let people know that smitfraudfix did work for me in the end. You can look it up on google and follow the instructions on one of the links. Im not affiliated with either the schmucks who give this virus, nor the guy who finally figured out how to delete it, but wanted to share the fact that there is a problem, and i have found at least one fix.

Simple free download will fix most problems with malware.
And that firefox browser can not be all that bad since eveyrone on here touts it's praises.

And once again anyone and eveyrone who uses the internet and does not keep a tidy / protected machine? How can you feel sorry for all of them .... it's almost worse than IRL *in real life due to the anonimity the NET affords you.

well a few things. First off, this particular adware was not easily fixed, and i work in the industry and have delt with many issues similar. Smitfraud (the name of the adware i got here) was a real PITA (pain in the ass). And its not good that its on this site, and i figured best someone here was aware of that fact. So that maybe they can deal with it, as well as for those who get it can now maybe find the fix for it.

As for the second part of what you said, well i didnt quite understand it all. honestly. I have several computers here, with varying degrees of protection on them because of their uses. This particular adware would not have been caught by anything im aware of. And sharing a fix for a problem is one of the things that makes the internet bearable and communal, instead of just finding a solution to a problem and keeping it to yourself. Im not quite sure how you related that to real life situations, sorry.

And yeah i love Firefox, just like i preferred Netscape over IE. More than aything else due to its surperior managability escpecially in reference to bookmarks (they use the same method, which makes sense since they are both Mozilla based). And Firefx itself wasnt bothered by the adware, even tho i got it using Firefox, it still only affected IE.

So, im not quite sure what the purpose of your post was. If you felt that malware was so easily dealt with, normally id think you would have recomended your preference. Your first sentance was a statement but youended it with a "?" so im not sure what that was supposed to be. I was just trying to be helpfull to the sites admins and the community in general.

Update your Firefox Browser, its ancient, many similar Exploits already fixed.

i recently got the smitfruad virus/adware while using your IM feature.

Something likely triggered it, could have been the Macromedia Flash Engine, because if that was true, I would have had many other Complaints about by now. Its in this Manner that malicious Code Writers attempt to conceal themselves by making their Virus activate with another Event.
