| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 3/5/2008 3:54:45 AM | do you take any?
if so, what do you take, and why?
if not, why?
a couple of weeks ago i decided it would probably be a good idea for me to start taking some vitamin C. i had never had the flu in my life up until june last year, and i have now had it twice in just over six months, so i figured that it wouldn't do any harm to get as much vitamin C into me as possible.
i was telling a friend about it and she happened to have two tubes of dissolvable vit C, so gave me one....i have had it here for just over a week and was really hesitant...i'm not a lover of dissolvable medicines because of the taste..but i have just bitten the bullet and had one and it wasn't quite as bad as i'd imagined..it's flavoured orange.
so i think i will keep the tube in my bag and whenever i fancy a cold drink i will have one of these...hopefully i can kiss farewell to the flu for a while :D

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 3/5/2008 4:12:34 AM | I don't currently take any (although up until recently I was taking iron tablets). My mother used to make me take some kind of multi vitamin tablets, and she has a cupboard full of various concoctions.
However, isn't it supposed to be the case that if you eat a varied diet and get out in the sunshine you shouldn't need to take additional vitamins or minerals?
That said, given some of the lives that many people lead and the events that happen to them, it could be the case that the immune system is vulnerable, and once it's attacked, if it does not recover fully then it will continue to succumb to further infection.

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 3/5/2008 4:26:00 AM | I do try and have a balanced diet but even still I take multi vitiamins with iron (as I am slighlty annemic) Also due to my arthritus I take cod liver oil tablets and Glucosamine Sulphate tablets which not only help arthritus and joint flexability, but also help keep youthfull ness of skin though collegens (I just wanted the benefit for arthritus but bonus!)
I feel much brighter and at ease with MissSelf after the first three weeks of taking vitamins and minerals also I think clearer, have become less emotoinal, so much so I would deffinatley recomend seeking advise on what to take to anyone.
I hardly ever have a cold even though I go outside with wet hair every morning in any weather . I use an outside shower block every morning or evening regardless of season and temperature.
Vitamins are quite cheap so why not make sure your body has all it needs? After all we only have one to last us! Please take care of yourselves.

do you think it's ok to put these dissolvable tabs in lemonade instead of water? I think it's a very bad idea to do that but for some reason we used to take rubex in milk when I was a kid and I've no idea why at all. It seems a very strange thing to have done but then again my mother was very strange and had odd ideas.
If you must put your dissolvable tabs in lemonade, you should make sure to fill your glass only halfway otherwise it might spill over when the fizz gets fizzier. What I do know about fizz though is that if you add fizzy drinks to alcohol it will make the alcohol go to your head a lot faster but I don't know if the applies to vitamin C.
I just take vitamin b complex but I used to take a vitamin e supplement until my doctor told me that it was dangerous.

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 3/5/2008 3:01:09 PM | I have the multi vitamins on stand-by for hangovers and days I havent eaten much or just fancy a boost.
Whats probably most beneficial is the B12 and minerals that are part of my multi-vits, as the others you should be getting from food anyways.
Zinc is quite useful for repairing damaged/dry skin sometimes too, but I don't use/need zinc anymore.
I always take a vegetarian Omega 3,6,9 supplement every day, (cos its supposed to be good for your brain) and I try to take St.Johns Wort, Ginseng, and Ginko biloba, I have all them pills in my cupboard but I dont take them everyday because I dont want to start rattling the next time I go for a jog!
At night I sip chamomile tea and drop 4 strong Valerian tablets and drops of californian poppy tincture in the tea just to send me off into space nicely

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 3/5/2008 3:11:07 PM | Malt extract cos it tastes nice My lad likes it too, and I reckon if it got a generation of kids thru rationing there must be some goodness worth him having in it.
I think there's B vits or something in it which is why our gran's used to make our Mums down a spoonful a day but I just like the taste in porridge or on toast, or in a malt loaf or . . . . . .
Swap it for local honey in the summer cos it helps hayfever without making you all drowsy and er, well it tastes nice .........
If I'm run down then I'll take a liquid multi-vit orange tonic cos it tastes nice . . . . .
When I remember my son gets a fish oil capsule, but cos they don't taste nice it's often forgotten.

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 3/5/2008 11:53:16 PM | If you are on a balanced diet there is no real need to take vitamins and minerals.. unless of course you have a medial condition where you have difficulty in absorbing these extra boosts... My dad always swears by cod liver oil and been taking it for years.. he is 77 now and fit as a fiddle, never suffers colds/flu and is very agile.. However I do think 70% of health is made up with good genes..the rest is healthy living and good future.. anyway the end result is the same.. you can not avoid death forever.. | |

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 4/28/2008 5:35:15 AM | I take vitamins every day.... vitamin b6 ,, vitamin D , and a calcium ... gensing has always been a favorite , its great for repairing any damaged whatevers... I do my push-ups etc every morning , love my coffee ,.. sliced peach (tin) with cottage chees and two toast.... When I feel a cold comming on, ,... I thinly slice up half a white onion , ..... saltless soda biscuits and some nice strong cracker barrel chees, OR , a tin of sardines .... end of cold symptoms!!!, Never had a cold as far back as I can remember.... The power of Broccollie, two years ago I had a lot of problems with one knee, I had to get it drained,... about a month later I was reading a health book and they were advocating broccollie... I do`nt really like the stuff , I use a cream of mushroom soup, and add my broccollie.... or, make a thin chees sauce.... or have it cold with blue cheese salad dressing ....... Never!!!... anymore knee problems !!!.... Almonds !!!.. every day I snack on about 25 almonds while watching TV... Its great roughage food, plus its a good anti cancer food !!....... the grocers had a special on last fall and I must have bought 40 pounds... I store them in my freezer... | vitamins & minerals? Posted: 4/28/2008 2:50:06 PM | As a chemist and sports enthusiast...
Remember these things are only suppliments and you only need to take them if you are not getting the nutrients from your diets. Vitamin C has been proven to shorten the lifetime of flu and colds in some studies and I think it works well if you have a cold etc. If you eat loads of fruit (5 a day) then you wont need them. Personally I think 5 a day is a fair amount to squeeze into a normal british diet haha.
I take creatine suppliments along with whey protein as Im trying to slim down as well as feed my muscles at the same time. But in the powder there is also a whole hunk of vits and minerals to suppliment my diet with, it doesnt do any harm just if you have more than you need it just comes out one end or another.
Geordie girl is right if you eat a balanced diet you wont need any suppliments, iron is recommended for women on their menstual cycle or after a big accident. Helps produce nice new healthy blood cells. About going out in the sunshine you need, yeah your right if your taking vit A you need something like vit B or K to absorb it.
Leannie - yeah its fine to put them in lemonade as its almost the same. Your still get the active ingredients you want.
Its controversial about vit E, some say its good for the heart, some say its bad and promotes attacks etc.
The best things you can put in your bodies is eating a raw egg - it has tonnes of vits and minerals alone. Also I would highly recommend eating more pomegranites too!
But hey what ever works for ya, if its doing some good then keep it up!

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 4/28/2008 2:52:48 PM | ^^^ I like the occasional bit of herb too.... Multivitamin/mineral daily and Calcium/vitamin d once or twice a week. Glucosamine if I get a bone injury or some sort of joint pain, usually takes about a week to notice an effect. | |

For those requiring this service I can do mail order, but it's even better when dispensed in person!

| vitamins & minerals? Posted: 8/26/2008 11:55:13 AM | being an older fellow I think its smart to take a few vitamins... I take vitamin D, for sunshine... B1 was advised by my chemest for anxiety ...as it calms one down.... B6 is good for extra energy .... Vitamin C and calcium... Gensing helps t0 boost the immune system,....but was advised to take the local brand,,, Two years ago I had a badly inflamed left knee... I went to the twit specialist who poked around and half drained it... I am sure I would have been better off with my lady vetinarian !!!!..... I did some health book reading and decided to eat at least one broccolie head a week... No more knee problems !!!!....and felt much better in general.... I now make it a rule to have lots of greens with any meal...Spinnage I buy bulk , wash it well in a seiv and rinse.. place in freezer ziplock bags to have later or if I run out ........ PS, I still have all my hair and it only has a little grey !!! Iam told vitamin B is great ...... Parsley is great for internal pin worms , or any other intestinal microbs as parsley has a strong chemical that will kill many internal bugs....I also make a parsley tea...its much like chinese but nicer ... For your dog or cat,,they also get loaded with intestinal bugs....boil two cups of water, add half cup of fresh parsley and simmer for two minuites... let it cool and then place into a large freezer Zip lock bag. place laying down in your fridge`s freezer,..break off a chunk (two table spns) and put into your pets drinking water... you`ll notice how frisky he get ,... my old 25 year old cat regeuvinated by 10 years...... Take care John l | |
