I just couldn't resist saving a 1.5 yr old beagle/terrier/(possibly some bassit). She is very good in the house, is housebroken, and personable. I know there is a transition period which I figure is why she won't play with her toys much (or it could be the ice cold weather). That all will come in time, but my concern is that she is barley eating. I got the same food the shelter was using, tried warm water, hiding treats in the bowl, put it in her crate, ect... I am seeing if anyone has any different types of ideas that might help.

No healthy dog will starve itself....be patient. You might try some white rice, pasta, or chicken broth. Be forewarned.....she will learn to expect good food if you start this. Give her some time to settle in. Buy some hi quality dry kibble. I.E. Purina Pro Plan , Eukanuba, Iams ...more expensive, but she will eat less than poor quality food. Put her food out and give her 15 minutes to eat it, if she does not eat in that time...set it up and try later that day. Good Luck!!!!!

Try a little can of potted meat. No animal can resist it. And post a pic of her. Mine was a beagle mixed with terrier.

Well today she is slowly eating more. I only got her on Thursday so I know she is still getting comfortable here. I know I could put some people food in, but when I was growing up we adopted a Greyhound and she did the same until we put people food in and now she will not eat anything but people food, or dog food with a ton of gravy or something like that. I don't want her to get into that same habit. I will post her pic on my profile in a little bit if you want to look.

evnstevn-does your dog chew as bad as pure beagles are supposed to? Mine has been really good so far and I am thinking that she may not need to be crated for too long at night and when I run out of the house. She has already made it her place, which is the point of the crate. I am assuming she was crate trained with her previous owners. She has yet to have an accident in the house too (which is supposed to happen from what I am told).

Mine chewed up whatever she could find but I didn't know about cages back then so she had the whole house to herself and she was really fond of bedsheets for some reason. But she was the best person I ever met.

Reminds me of two old hunters I heard talking one time. One was saying he might have to get rid of his hunting dogs because the cost of dog food was so high.

The other guy said he fed his dogs collard greens.

"Collard Greens" he screeched, "my dogs would never eat collard greens."
Mine wouldn't either replied the other man............. for three days

Sounds like your new friend is simply getting adjusted to her new home. Once a standard routine is established I'm sure she'll be just fine. You may want to consider putting her on a strict feeding schedule, twice a day has always worked well for my dogs. Some can graze feed all day without over eating. Others, well, they become 'see-food' eaters, lol. Good luck with your new buddy and kudos to you for giving her a good home.

Put the food down for 10 min and then take it away, she will learn to eat when it's time to eat that way.

"barley eats" -- What is it, a vegetarian?

Try pouring hamburger or bacon grease over her dry kibble. Even tuna can juice.

HAND feed her for awhile -- she needs to know this new place offers love and this will tie it altogether in her mind.

i used to raise and show afghan hounds and shepherds and had a couple of dogs that didn't eat well enough..i found that mixing in some garlic powder made the dry food more appetizing and then gradually eliminated it.

if a dog is trained properly when young you shouldn't have a problem with him chewing up anything..usually when an adult dog picks up that bad habit,he's trying to tell you something..it's probably a result of some change in his life and he finds it difficult to adjust to.for example...if you were home with your pet all day,and then acquire a full time job, your dog may go crazy because he's not used to being left alone like that...crating is a great training tool to correct this behaviour if you're not there to redirect your pet's attention.

I think it has to do with the food itself. I got the same kind the shelter was using, but I took her to my father's house yesterday to meet the "old lady" greyhound (14 yrs and in really good health still) and she ate most of the greyhound's food. It could be that she smelled dog in the dish, or that the food dish is raised up so the GH doesn't have to bend all the way down. Thanks for the input everyone!

I wouldn't worry too much. The same thing happenned to me and my pup. Like others have said, if the dog is healthy he will eventually eat. Don't give it too much human food, he will become accustomed to it and then he won't want a darn thing to to with his dry food.
What I did was this. I got some wet dog food, and just every couple of days mixed a little bit in with his dry food.
My dopey man ate it right up!!!
Also he def needs a more time to become adjusted to his new home. Eventually he will perk up and eat what he is given.
Don't baby him, or force him, eventually your new little friend will eat!!
Good luck!!

Change the food how would you know if she even ate the shelter food.Which I would persume to be low end.Yo dont have to gourmet it add a little gravy or boullion plus the extra moisture is good for them.Sometime you have to ask yourself would you eat it.

Bears, I have 2 bichons: one is built like a miniature rhino and the other is a stringy little guy...lol. I buy them an all natural type of food (Natural Choice) because they eat less and poop less. One thing I've noticed: if they're not hungry, they won't eat. They won't starve themselves; just make sure he has plenty of clean water. As long as he stays hydrated, he'll be okay. It's all about routine and it'll take some time for the 2 of you to get on the same schedule. Like some of the others, I don't "free feed"...the food goes down at a certain time and it comes up when dinner is over.

Yeah...I'd be concerned too...once a dog starts eating very little, you know it is going on a diet...which makes it skinnier for the potroast. Dang dogs...sometimes they are a bit too smart. But...make it tempting enough...it'll eat.
You never know...maybe it only eats a little at a time. I had a dog do that...it would munch all day on a bowl of dry food. She didn't pig out...and was very healthy.
Good luck.

Our golden would stop eating whenever my parents left on vacation

I would give him a little cottage cheese to whet his appetite

Sounds like she didn't like the shelter food - glad she's eating now

Yeah, make the "time for food" limited ... that will solve the problem...... she will learn to to use the situation and take care of the moment.... that's for sure... any dog have this“natural, to take advantage of the situation. and maybe get more deliscious meals if resisting the daily meal in success.. just keep on :D

Shelters and rescues feed the pets whatever is donated, which is usually very low-grade dogfood.
I adopted a dog this past Fall, and the woman at the rescue told me he was eating, store brand crap.
Your little girl just knows the food is crap and doesnt want to eat it. She probably wasnt eating it at the shelter either.
You do not have to spend a fortune for your pets food, but it has to meet their nutritional needs and be a bit appealing.
Come to find out my guy has allergies, I think. Lots of ear problems.
He ate the crap they fed him, and I put him on a better quality diet, but now I have had to upgrade it again, to an all natural diet. He has recurring ear infections, and nothing from the vets would help.
The all natural we are trying now, is quite a bit more expensive than the other food he was getting.
But it will be worth it if he stops being tortured with these ear infections.

Good Luck,

+1 to the "putting the food down for 10 minutes" concept. That alone can possibly reduce if not totally eliminate any "dominance" issues you may have down the road.
Also, when I first got my guy from the shelter he was on and off his food for the first month or so. He had a skin infection when I got him so when I took him back for a re check 2 weeks later he had put on a couple of pounds so he wasn't starving.
