| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 1:16:38 PM | Ever run across a filler profile or had a new match sent to you whose picture was taken during the late 70's? Looks like Yahoo got snagged for it

Hopefully this will help to keep things legit on personals sites instead of plowing through profiles with no people attached to them!

| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 1:22:32 PM | I've been expecting a "cleaning house" type law any day because of the practices of several dating sites. It's the paying sites that have the most to regret/fear from this backlash. They had been playing with peoples emotions and expectations for some time now just to make a quick buck... It's catching up with them now! | |

| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 1:37:18 PM | | Certainly, nothing like being treated like cattle. POF is fantastic because it's free, all encompassing and has cool features. It seems like the big pay sites (yahoo, match, chemistry, eharmony, etc.) are focused on premium paid subordinate services in addition to the subscription fee. I believe false profiles add incentive to stay signed up or even subscribe to subordinate services. However, if the majority of those profiles were removed the site may lose most of it's apparent value to subscribers. I am really looking forward to seeing how this evolves. | |

| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 1:42:36 PM | I have heard and read about other pay sites doing basically the same thing...
Someone subscribes...
They get a few hits...
Then nothing comes out of the hits...
The send a notice to cancel...
Again, they get new hits...
The re-subscribe and then the hits fall off...
I have read where some sites actually pay women to send men who are about to cancel mail saying they liked their profile etc...

| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 1:52:34 PM | I can think of a dating site that even goes to the extent of sending emails to members saying so and so is intrested. when infact the person paying for the use of the site never sent such an email.
some sites don't even telll u how much ur bill is prior to u putting ur credit card number in. they claim that u won't be billed but its just to verify that you are who you say u are and they go ahead and bill u reguardless. there is something about that practice I think is un ethical. its probably illegal since they never let it be known that u would be billed let alone a price tag.
only if I was sue happy.

| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 3:08:48 PM | That's quite interesting. It was only a matter of time really, before someone decided to sue over something like this. I signed up to a dating site once, didn't put anything in the profile (not even a picture) & got contacts within 24hrs. Canceled the account, well because that^ just seems bogus & you'd have to be an idiot not to realise otherwise, and they still didn't cancel the account. It's fraudulent. It's like gambling; you give (false) hope for people. Really they should enact some sort of law, that provides guidelines for dating sites for what constitutes an active profile, active member &/or those long gone. | |

| Yahoo loses 230 defense Posted: 3/11/2008 5:38:37 PM | | In all actuality, these practices are in keeping with most other large business segments. "Bait and Switch" has been the topic of much discussion in financial circles. Large retail companies, gym franchises, cell phone companies, cable companies, etc. all have some manner of presenting one thing but delivering another. I guess my point is two fold: A) it's sad this has become such common practice B) companies seem to assume if companies generally conduct business this way then they should too. Customer service and quality are now the subject of Bombay folklore. | |

It would get thrown out after they saw it was in the early morning hours and your credit card records showed you had been in the bar all night...
