Ottawa Senators

Funny to see the Habs as a darkhorse pick, considering they may be the Eastern Conference regular season champs by the time all the games are played. Weird even saying that though. Highest scoring team in the NHL and most people could not name more than 5 players on the team.
My darkhorse pick right now would be the Hurricanes. I can't believe I just said that
At any rate, still too many regular season games to be played.

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/18/2008 11:03:19 PM | Devils over the Sharks in 6. Marty Brodeur wins his 4th Cup and his first Conn Smyth.
Dark horse in the east is the Strangers. In the west i like the Flames as a dark horse, but i need to see them get in before i call that one.
Who would I like to see? Leafs aside, Id like to see the Caps put down the mean old Ducks in 5.

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/19/2008 8:40:13 AM | | Les Canadiens will win it all this year, best offense, best power play and this team has heart, look at that comeback against the Rangers a couple of months ago for proof. They got hot when they needed to. They'll beat the Ducks or the Stars in the finals. | |

Bah, that only takes away from the prediction! Nothing bolder than predicting a team to win a Stanley cup, and have them not even make the playoffs.
Thats the beauty of it. You can either laugh at yourself, or brag once it's all said and done.
If this thread stays here for 3 weeks, it'll be playoffs time, anyway. Deleting a prediction thread, would be like deleting a weather predicting website, due to it being ahead of time.
Anyways, for my predictions.
My favorite? The Montreal canadians. Who I want to win? The Ottawa Senators or Montreal Canadiens(I'm a fan of both, so win win for me). My dark horse? The Carolina Hurricanes. Brind'Amour will be back, they're already rolling on all cylinders, and have Ward between the pipes.
They're my team that'll likely pull an upset or two.
In the West, my darkhorse are the Calgary Flames. Not a favorite this year, but I think they can do it.

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 12:28:20 AM | Put me down for the Penguins. Some nice deals at the deadline helped them. They'll beat the Sharks or Wings.
Dark horse? Black Hawks are going to sneak in the playoffs and with the size and youth, they can give a veteran team trouble. Yes, major long shot but you did ask for a dark horse.
Rangers would be the dark horse in the east. Avery is not just beating everybody up, he's scoring every night it seems. Plus they have the defense and the goalie to make a good run.
Be interesting with the Penguins. Looks like their goalies are clueless with top corner shots to the glove side. That costs them every night it seems...

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 3:58:54 AM | Hi krazed ...
"Brind'Amour will be back..."
I picked the 'Canes as thedarkhorse as well, but unless he's one of the quickest healers in the world, there;s no chance of him being back. Last I heard was 4-6 months after his surgery. Have you hears something different>

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 5:23:18 AM | It's strange but that's the third of fourth time this week that I've heard Brind'Amour will be back for the playoffs. He got hurt in mid Feb and they said 4 to 6 months then which would put June at the earliest. Sportsnet said last night he'd be back for the playoffs as well. So I dunno. I know he's probably the most well conditioned athlete in the NHL, so mybe we'll see some kind of sports miracle for rehab on a torn ACL.
Staal actually leads the NHL in points since Rod the bod went down. 26 points in his 16 games since Valentines Day.
Glad to see somebody else picking the Strangers as a dark horse. They've been flying under the radar here in the second half quietly going about their business. They've sure got Jersey's number this year now 6-0 against them as of last night.

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 6:15:16 AM | Yeah, I think Carolina has to worry about making it past the first round. The team seems pretty solid even without him. Amazing how new guys always stepping up on that team.
My predictions for the Finals: Pittsburgh vs. San Jose
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 8:33:23 AM | I'd steer clear og Pittsburgh, because of their goaltending. Conklin is doing whatever he is doing with smoke and mirrors and Fleury is .... well... he's Fleury. | |
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 10:49:30 AM | Red Wings are my team and I will cheer for no other team.
San Jose looks like the favourite right now especially after they picked up Brian Cambell.
Dark Horse pick..... If Washington gets in I can see them do some damage, they are playing some exciting hockey right now(not including their last game vs Chicago though)
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 11:16:06 AM | I woulda said Detroit to win it all notably more confidently a few weeks back so I'll still go with them albiet shakily lately.
As for my fav, the home boys of course. Oilers. Hey, put that much youthful piss-n-vinegar in one pot and bring to a boil............. Stranger things have happened.
Now, even though I'd rather not even see them make the playoffs, I'd give my longshot guess to the Avs. Dunno what it is about those guys but it seems like they're almost always around come game-time.
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/20/2008 1:23:27 PM | | At the beginning of the year I'd say Red Wings over the Senators in 6, but since Christmas the Senators have been avg. at best. My prediction now is Red Wings over the Canadians in 4. | |
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/21/2008 2:02:32 AM | Nice point on Pitt's goaltending, Prairie. Then again, both Conklin and Fleury have problems with top glove side shots. You'd think the Defense would realize that, eh? Every goalie has a weakness. Defense is supposed to protect it, no?
imho my Maple Leafs would be a goal a game better if the darn defense cleared out in front of the crease and looked for guys having lanes to put easy deflections on the stick of a guy parked 5 feet off the net.
Too often I blame the goaltender. Then I see the replay
I stand by Hawks and Rangers as dark horses.
Think you got me off the Pens though. Call it the Habs over the Sharks.
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/21/2008 5:26:54 AM | I'll say Penguins will be a strong contender. Don't remind me about the goaltending faults. Lately it's like the Pens don't even start playing until they are down 2-0. I like Conk because he seems to lock it down when needed. As in the past and this year especially Sabourin with the Pens leading would give up three goals with five minutes to go and they'd lose. Conk seems to thrive when the Pens get majorly outshot.
So my pick is the Pens in the west I'd say Wings or Ducks.
|
| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/21/2008 6:24:43 AM | Hmm...dont like them at all, but once again this team has proven their strength-Detroit to win it all.
My fave to win it all would be: San Jose, they will take Montreal in Five. They have a good mixture of offense and defense.
Darkhorses- Pittsburgh and Montreal. Both teams are amzingly fast and have proven lines. Just dont know if they can make it to the Cup with out being really banged up.

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/21/2008 2:39:12 PM | i am going with the canes in the east.i just love the way they are playing going in.in the west i will be cheering for minny so i guess thats my dark horse, but i think it will probably be san jose that gets through.

| Predict your 2008 Stanley cup winner. Posted: 3/21/2008 2:48:04 PM | | I think the Stars will get their act together at the end of the season and make a serious run at the cup. Richards just might be the piece that puts them over the top for the first time since 1999. Turco is as good as anyone in net in the league. Modano is a highly skilled two-way player (guess I have Ken Hitchcock to thank for that). Lehtinen is a great guy to have in the post-season, and Ott keeps everyone honset out there. He is nuts, lol! | |

I just didn't think his injury required surgery. Knowing it does, means this guy is out until next season. So you're right on the injury front, but it doesn't change my opinion on the 'Canes.
I really like that team, and even with Brind'Amour out, it's a team that can pull off an upset or two. The veterans already on this team, plus the nature of this team(Hard working, grinding team), just makes me like them that much more.
