| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 2:06:43 PM | I spend less on entertainment these days because of high gas prices. It seems as though the luxuries are going out the window, one by one, as the price of needs continues to grow.
Have any of you had to make adjustments to your spending habits in other areas of your life due to the high and rising cost of gasoline?

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 2:26:59 PM | | Immolation, but it's just as well, me not being a monk and not that opposed to war after all. Gas may be going up but it's still cheap. At 40-50 MPG, even with gas at 4.00 USD/gal, it beats walking. | |

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 2:32:38 PM | I have finally decided I need a more fuel efficient car. I am not in love with what I drive now or anything, just really didn't want to buy a second one. But it's getting to the point where the average money I probably spend on this gas pig is somewhere between $200-300 a month ABOVE what I'd spend on something that got around 30mpg. That's as much as a car payment on new mid priced car.
I've been thinking for the last year or two the prices would eventually come back down, so I held off. But that's clearly not happening anytime soon, and I am tired of waiting. It's going to get higher before it gets lower, if at all.
I have a boat and jet skis at my vacation home as well, and was thinking about this topic just other day when my friend was complaining how expensive it was to go snowmobiling for the weekend. I visit this home far less frequently when I am single (much more fun to go with a g/f, obviously), but I am sure I will be less inclined to put them in the water if it's going to cost several hundred dollars to do it for a weekend.
It's absolutely insane.

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 2:44:10 PM | It is so ridiculous. I used to be able to budget now that is out......So no budget. Just the absolute essential items. No driving just for a day anywhere...I make it into a trip and stay at least a couple days. I work more hours cuz I can't afford to go to work and go home and then come back. Relationships with folks that live a distance away. It is my pledge that the powers that are creating this, need to experience some of this shortage as well.....It is easy to cut others off when you are feeling no pain but if they were experiencing this as well .......this would be over. don't support overseas oil companies..........let them experience the crisis | |

Guys, think positive -- your complaining about gas prices won't get it better. You attract what you talk about -- incresing of gas prices.

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 2:50:24 PM | | Good question OP, I'm curious myself how others are handling the hit. I am recently divorced, and on a TIGHT budget, so soaring gas prices have hit me especially hard. At first, I started charging gas - and doctors visits, prescriptions, vet bills...all those unplanned expenses. Not a good long term plan. I recently had to face facts that the only descretionary expense I have is food. I've had to cut nearly $200/month out of what I spent on groceries and buying lunches. So now we eat more pasta, I plan leftovers, and brown bag it 4-5 days a week. It helps, but I sure do miss my sushi! | |

I am dating local men now...it means much less driving That goes for me too. Also, my daily dose of Starbucks. Life just isn't the same without that boost of caffeine!

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 3:16:05 PM | | since my SO is not local , i decided to quit smoking so I wouldnt be burdened by the high price of gas. it has been 4 weeks now, and i am saving 25.00 a week. he means much more to me than smokes, so i'm happy with my decision and i feel so much better. | |

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 3:28:40 PM | Well quitting smoking sure is a positive coming from this, at least from my view.
I am a long haul trucker in Houston right now and filling my truck costs about $900 now. This will get me 1200 miles. It bothers me to no end that the price of the food I am hauling will cost everyone more because shippers have to keep paying me more to haul it and the costs just funnel down to the consumer.
Only ment that first line as a quote. Don't know how that happened...

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 3:38:26 PM | I'm in the trucking industry. So, I do a lot of driving for work, and don't much care for going anywhere, once I get home.
However, my every now and again trips down to see my parents have to be planned, and budgeted for now.
I filled up my pick up the other day, and the pump cut me off at $50; thankfully, my truck was full. It seems like only yesterday, that I would fill up my motorcycle, hand the attendant a $1 bill, and get some change back. I guess those days are gone for good.

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 5:34:32 PM | I'm giving up the car of my dreams!
I've saved and saved -- Now I finally have the $$$$ to pay for the luxury car I've been dreaming of.
But with the price of gas ( and possible future shortage thereof!) I dare not buy ANY car just yet.
Instead I'm drivng around in my 14 year old Integra, waiting yet another year (or more) to see what good alt fuels/or extra low mpg models will hit the market.
I'm sure whatever I get won't be as nice -- but Hey! -- at least I'll be able to drive it!

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 6:18:08 PM | Use to drive a Ford 150 pick up truck which use to get approx. 29 MPG. When the Ford died two years back, I purchased a 2004 Toyota Corolla which gets close to 38 MPG on the highway. Therefore, my savings on the fuel by change of vehicles has off set the gas prices. For this reason I have not had to give up anything. Next car I purchase might be either a Smart Car or an air car if they become available in Canada. The air car is suppose to be available in the USA as of 2010. | |
|
| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 6:49:08 PM | Thanks for the info, the smart car and air car are quite interesting. I would get one myself for sure, just to drive to where my daughter is and get her or for work. As for cutting back, well, I have cut back in quite a few places. I do not go home for lunch anymore, I do not eat out as often, just when I get paid and that is once. I still eat sushi once a month. Eat less, which is not a bad thing.
Just for everyone's FYI, the price of oil is caused by multiple factors: the reduction in interest rates, which causes the dollar to loose value, this in turn due to the fact that the barrel of oil is priced in dollars....allows other countries to buy it cheaper and so buy more. Demand is one of the other obvious factors, but more to do with the value of the dollar. Maybe the oil companies to some degree as well. Anyway, just so you know.

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 6:50:22 PM | | I gave up speeding. The most economical speed re gas consumption is 40 - 45 MPH and that's what I do locally. On the highway where every one is doing between 70 & 80 mph I do 50 - 55 with my flashers blinking. It takes me a few minutes longer to get where I'm going, so what. | |
|

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 6:53:35 PM | | I mean if it is on a highway that is 70 to 75. Such as the one I drive to go to get my daughter. I drive 75 there, but that is the legal speed limit. With that said, agreeably, driving the speed limit will save you gas. | |

| What have you given up because of gas prices? Posted: 3/19/2008 7:07:03 PM | Has anyone looked at the LOREMO? It is a German car. Please Google it if you have time.
It is a really cool car that looks great and gets about 135-150 mpg of diesel. (maybe Bio-Deisel?)
It is going to be introduced in Europe this year, and in the US the next.
I personally think that it will be too small for most Americans, and too close to the ground to pass highway safety tests. But If they can make a taller/larger one that gets about 75-85 mpg I would definately buy it.
I like the fuel cell car. Honda has made one, but only California has fuel cell stations. It requires the use of natural gas to power.

driving the speed limit will save you gas I've heard more than one expert on talk radio say that all we need to do to drive the price of gas down is "drive the speed limit". I believe it, but then I suppose OPEC would adjust their output accordingly.
