| Problems eating in front of me Posted: 3/20/2008 11:36:32 AM | I did a thread search, and I never realized how many words have the word "eat" in them. Death, Great, Cheat Breath, etc.
ANYWAYS.....
I wanted to take my friend out and she says that she doesn't like eating in front of me. Her friend even complied that she also doesn't like eating in fron of certain guys. What is this all about?
I guess on the plus side, if I take her out, I won't have to worry about paying for more than a soda.

There you go then!
Either way - a cheap date!

(Or....you have bad eating manners and gross her out. )

| Problems eating in front of me Posted: 3/20/2008 11:49:04 AM | | I met a guy from POF that told me the same thing. Well not exactly the same thing. He was talking about not being able to eat in front of me, not you or your friend. We solved this problem by sitting at different tables which turned out great as I got to flirt openly with the young waiter as opposed to having to flirt behind my date's back. Works for me! | |

That's a good sign of someone with an eating disorder.
I disagree.
I simply think the woman in question, like many other women ( and men ) is simply nervous about eating in front of a 'new' person'. Maybe they don't want to drop their food onto their lap/chest or perhaps don't wish to appear like they're ordering a pile of food on a first/second date.

| Problems eating in front of me Posted: 3/20/2008 1:27:28 PM | There have been many times when I didn't feel comfortable eating in front of someone new. The burgers look great, but if I order a burger & fries will I look like a pig? If I order a salad, will he think I'm neurotic and have an eating disorder? Oh god - Do I have anything stuck in my teeth -- where's a mirror? These are all thoughts that have crossed my mind at any given time. I had to force my way past them and just go with the flow. I do pay attention to WHAT I order because I think it's rude to order a huge meal just so I can box half of it for tomorrow's lunch...unless I'm paying for my own meal.
People have different levels of comfort and this can vary among their family, friends & acquaintences. Until she gets really comfortable with you, try to do things that don't require having a meal together. Take in a movie and start off with a soda & bag of popcorn in a dark theater...you can't really see her eating it, and you might accidently do the "hand-brush" while reaching into the popcorn bag at the same time.

| Problems eating in front of me Posted: 3/20/2008 1:45:33 PM | That is VERY odd! Does she have bad eating habits like talking with her mouth full? Did they go into detail? I mean... I won't eat ribs on a date but come on!!!! | |

| Problems eating in front of me Posted: 3/20/2008 4:14:50 PM | OP - I've been there!!! Good post . I've been raised to "clean my plate". When I was dating my ex hubby in college, the first couple of dates, I was terrified to eat in front of him. I'm the type of woman, when I go out to eat, I'll get a small steak; potato; salad; and a glass of wine. Unless the food is really a pile of crap, I'll eat what's on my plate. I was so afraid that he would think I was a pig. I'd pick at my food. He'd ask "why aren't you eating". I told him that I was embarassed. Most of the women he dated, they would eat nothing but salads. He told me "I'm relieved that you like to eat real food and not just rabbit food".
I can't answer for her, but to some extent, having an ideal weight is being so brow beaten into women and girls this day & age. God forbid if we want to have a steak & potato, the world might see us as pigs. It's kind of the ol "damned if you do and damned if you don't". I think eventually, once she feels comfortable and safe with you, she'll be sharing your food with you.

| Problems eating in front of me Posted: 3/20/2008 5:56:08 PM | It could be shyness or low self esteem. She might be worried about making a mess or looking gross in some way, or that you'll think she's greedy. Usually this just takes time to get to know the person. The more comfortable she becomes with you, the easier it'll be for her to eat in front of you. | |
