Alot of people say they want someone who is intelligent as a partner or as a friend. I have a few questions for people.

What is it that brings you to the conclusion that someone is intelligent?

Is it their IQ? Is it their schooling? Is it their social skills? Is it thier ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?

Do you find intelligent people have a common disposition?

Please answer my questions.

When people say, "I want someone intelligent" they man, "I want someone who I think is intelligent." This can mean any number of things to the person that is making the statement.

Simple really, can you hold a conversation with me and not just have input, but understand my point of view on things.
A good mark of intelligence i think is being able to think up new and original solutions to a problem.
I.Q i think is meaningless, social skills isnt intelligence either, its a conditioned response to others.
To be corrected and admit when your wrong isnt intelligence, its maturity and integrity

When people say they want someone intelligent, they probably mean someone who is charming, witty, and capable of engaging in a coherent conversation about topics that are not limited to the latest sports game. Someone who is fun to be around and can brighten your day just by being in his company. Someone who understands that they are a human just like everyone else, and that they are not inherently better or superior than others.

THey probably do NOT mean someone who can say, graph a quadratic equation without a calculator, or accurately lecture about Freud's psychological theories.

In short...people mean emotional / social intelligence, not academic / scientific / scholarly intelligence.

Okay and if they dont understand YOUR point of view they arent intelligent? What if they have no input on what you say and take your point of view as unintelligent. Are they therefor lacking intelligence?

What is it that brings you to the conclusion that someone is intelligent?

The way in which they can hold a conversation about many subjects, they dont have to be experts on any but be knowledgeable on alot.

Is it their IQ? Is it their schooling? Is it their social skills? Is it thier ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?
I wouldnt say its their IQ as EQ is just as important, schooling means nothing some of the least intelligent people come out of great schools. Social skills are very important (EQ comes into play there) And intelligent people are always willing to accept they can be wrong

Do you find intelligent people have a common disposition?
Not really, some people are very good at hiding their intelligence, others put on an act when really they dont have it, and some are what others would just call full of common sense.

I dont just want someone who is intelligent but someone who is wise

Ugh. There are too many different intelligences for me to answer the question properly.

I'd prefer to be with someone who is "book smart," "tech smart," or "geek smart" .... but that's because that's what I'm like. Very few people are "unintelligent."

if i see the person able to read a roadmap, can point in the general direction of East, understands that a generality is a useful concept and does not imply "all", figured out before age 18 that earning $4 and spending $5 translates into a heart attack and not happiness, is able to recognize when fat jiggles that it's a wake-up call to get back in shape, understands that tipping is baseless, and knowing astrology is nonsensical, then i'd can see some potential.

Is it thier ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?
.....It's not intelligence to admit you are wrong it's common courtesy.
Giving some thought to situations is intelligent and you don't need a high school diploma to do that. You spelt their wrong, but thats just your schooling, so does that make you less intelligent than anyone else?

What is it that brings you to the conclusion that someone is intelligent?

The connections and observations they make. And, for the type of intelligence that inspires and resonates with me... their inherent curiosity, insight and awareness.

Is it their IQ? Is it their schooling? Is it their social skills? Is it thier ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?

There are many different types of intelligence. I like open-minded people with a keen sense of observation and discovery.
I'm generally more appreciative of emotional intelligence than I am of "factual intelligence"... likely because I get more personal benefit out of being with someone who is emotionally aware than I do from being enthralled with/by someone who is a veritable abyss of inconsequentia.

I also admire people who are intelligent enough to know they aren't always right and don't know everything... that does take some intelligence to live from that place. *smiles*

Do you find intelligent people have a common disposition?

Nope. All flavours and styles of humanity are represented... from the most arrogant to the most humble.

Your kidding me....you think very few people are unintelligent????
You obviously havent met many people
I recently had a job interview and i turned up at the place early, went to the reception and asked for the name of the interviewer and none of the 5 receptionists there knew about the job, or knew the name of the interviewer so i went home, phoned the number from the advert-no answer.
Turns out the lady on the phone was in a meeting and the reason i couldnt find anyone who knew about the work i was to carry out is because the job was a seperate contract from the place, they didnt feel the need to tell main reception or leave anyone there to greet me.
Wtf was i supposed to do?, run about the whole buildinglooking for a faceless wonder in a building consisting of hundreds of people, not a clue about the job details?
I have no idea, but i see this level of stupidity in many people every day, are there very few unintelligent people...give me a break.

From my perspective, intelligence implies that someone is able to converse coherently about a variety of topics, which might include but is FAR from limited to sports, TV and beer; someone who is literate enough to read occasionally, and has enough range of vocabulary to express himself or herself beyond "it was good, it was bad, it was nice, it was funny"; a variety of interests and the ability to learn and develop new ones; a sense of curiosity about the world; imagination; the ability to tolerate a difference of opinion and consider another point of view without necessarily adopting it as their own; someone who can attempt to solve problems for himself or herself, without whining to others to take care of everything; and the ability to begin and carry on an email correspondence without resorting to text-speak.

I once read a book about different kinds of intelligence which included categories beyond what we usually assess in IQ tests. These included introspection, spatial reasoning, navigation, kinesthetics, creativity, music, and some others I can't remember. Probably memory! Hahahahaha.

Anyway, the book points out that whatever civilization holds as most valuable is how they assess who is the most intelligent. For example, in south pacific island cultures the most valuable skill is to be able to navigate to other islands for trade. Those individuals who have the internal compasses to know where they are on the planet are revered by others and are the wealthy ones in that culture. Transplant them into our culture and, unless they possess other types of intelligence we do value, they would be considered unintelligent.

According to what is valuable to me, I consider anyone who is kind, resourceful, likes to learn new things, and is calm as extremely intelligent.

All the posters above are right, they have legitimate angles & experience on this.
I get my definition of intelligence from all of life, including the plant kingdom:
INTELLIGENCE IS YOUR ABILITY TO SOLVE YOUR OWN PROBLEMS.

The true mark of intelligence is usually nothing more than the ability to see the obvious.
There is a great deal in human society which discourages intelligence. It's a wonderment to think what a marvelous world this could be if humans actually used their intelligence and cooperated together for practical solutions to problems.
There's too much money to be made and power to be gained by keeping people stupid.

When people say, "I want someone intelligent" they man, "I want someone who I think is intelligent."

I think this nails it for most people; most, when they say "intelligent," actually mean "agrees with me."

Education (which is gained better through reading than through schooling) is one measure of intelligence, but isn't the whole story. I've met well-read people who could quote whole chapters, but who didn't strike me as intelligent. Intelligence, for me, requires not only that you have a mind and work to develop it, but that you're willing to use it. Indeed, all of the intelligent people I've known have enjoyed using their minds.

An open mind is an obvious hallmark of intelligence, provided that it is tempered with some skepticism. After all, as Carl Sagan said, "Uncritically accepting every proffered notion, idea and hypothesis is tantamount to knowing nothing."

If there is one point that defines intelligence more than any other, I think it would be the willingness to honestly consider views other than one's own. An intelligent person understands that there is a chance he could be wrong.

Forgot who said it but it sounds about right, "....knowing that you do not know that which you do not know". Which I guess means knowing when to shrug.

True mark of intelligence, for me, is a bit of everything............
Someone who consciously knows what they're doing, but isn't afraid to ask others.
Someone who doesn't agree with everything that comes out of my or others mouth . I know I'm always right, but it gets tired after awhile
Someone who can appreciate and understand the *concepts* of things, however trivial.
Someone that is able to put themselves in someone else's shoes.

IQ is somewhat pointless. As a persons IQ is typically/usually defined by society rules. And since when is society a guideline for intelligence? Just look at the current state of the world. Same with educated/schooling, it's a bit like IQ, society's rules.

And last but not least; someone/something who/that can think for themselves/itself, so much so that they/it go against & challenge everything they've ever been taught or believed in and recognising and learning from (life) experiences....hhmm, well that just about eliminates everyone, including me

Sure, some of intelligence is related to IQ (I have a daughter-in-law with an IQ of 70, and she has a very difficult time figuring out which way is up). But certainly not all, or Mensa would be a great place to meet mates, and it isn't. . . . A mind that can gather information, and then actually make something of it, lol! For instance: is voting for a person for President on the basis you'd like to have a beer with him an intelligent decision? A mind that with a certain amount of information can synthesize a probable outcome. A mind that is able to see what IS (i.e., facts) rather than what it wishes were so (i.e., emotions).

A mind alive is just plain interesting, funny, and often charming. And great fun to be around.

Is it their IQ?

It can be a sign, but no promise of my definition of it.

Is it their schooling?

How they've USED that schooling, perhaps. I'm met some people with degrees that have cured me of me seeing it as any true benchmark of intelligence.

Is it their social skills?

A very important plus. We all live in a society, and need to get along together. Being polite and respectful, for example, is just good manners.

Is it their ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?

Actually, one of my definitions of wisdom is knowing how stupid you can be - and appreciating that fact.

Sometimes it may not be a question of right or wrong, but far more a question of different perspectives on something. For example, a liberal and conservative could have different priorities when looking at the same situation. Neither might be wrong, but more a reflection of their conflicting individual focus on what's more important.

There are varying types of intelligence, and it's like a buffet table. One hopes for a balanced meal.....

It's rather hard to define in a package, but one knows it when one sees it.

I have a tiny freckle on my arm that sort of resembles Einstein ...Would that be considered a mark of intelligence? Nevermind..maybe it looks more like a kidney bean Kat
