Both are a lot of fun. SPM is pretty diverse but still more of a rock album, where BWG is pretty much impossible to categorize and its humor can be very tricky and is often not understood. Self's songs often seem to be both parodies of and tributes to artists and/or genres while still being enjoyable on their own.

And of course--although I don't listen to it anymore--the Stone Roses first album. And: Royal Trux "Cats and Dogs"; Radiohead "The Bends"; Pixies "Doolittle" (1989 though, but close enough); My Bloody Valentine "Loveless"...

| best indie album of the nineties Posted: 4/2/2008 9:48:47 AM | | Speaking of The Pixies, "Trompe Le Monde" (1991) is a great one. At first I didn't like the change in their sound that came with "Bossanova", but after listening more objectively to it and "Trompe Le Monde" they really grabbed me. "Trompe Le Monde" and "Doolittle" are my two favorites from them. | |

Radiohead "OK Computer" Neutral Milk Hotel "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" Pavement "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" Yo La Tengo "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" Built to Spill "Perfect From Now On"

| best indie album of the nineties Posted: 5/30/2008 10:01:01 AM | Mogwai - Young Team
This one still gets better with each listen. It helps that I've seen Mogwai play many of the tracks in concert on a few occasions.
Other 1990's favorites...
Ride - Nowhere Electronic - Electronic My Bloody Valentine - Loveless The Verve - A Storm In Heaven Pixies - Bossanova The Church - Gold Afternoon Fix

About half the stuff (if not more) listed here were released by major labels. My definition of "indie" is stuff released on small independant (hence the term "indie") labels. Seems most people are listing their favorite alt rock.
