| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/24/2008 11:57:11 AM | There's a lot happening...big fights coming up soon, big things such as the EliteXC/CBS deal (May 31 is the first live, primetime, network fight). I figure maybe the other MMA fans of this forum can use this thread to check up for recent news and things like that, as well as post predictions and results and such.
Big fights coming up this year include: -Georges St. Pierre v Matt Serra for the UFC 170 lb championship -BJ Penn v Sean Sherk for the UFC 155 lb championship -Keith Jardine v Wanderlei Silva -Lyoto Machida v Tito Ortiz (Really excited to see how this one plays out with Tito's contract being up after this fight) -Chuck Liddell v Rashad Evans -"Rampage" Jackson v Forrest Griffin for the UFC 205 lb championship
These are just a few of the fights ONLY in the UFC with title consequences...(I could see the winner of Lyoto/Tito getting a title shot, as well as them setting Chuck up with a rematch against Jardine/Silva). This just leaves the Middleweight and Heavyweight titles unscheduled as of yet...I'm sure they'll put Anderson against Okami for the MW, seeing as how they love to have their champs avenge their losses.
I think the Heavyweight picture is a little more up in the air, though. There's not one clear-cut number 1 contender. Who do you guys think will, or should, have the next shot at Nog?

| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/24/2008 6:35:37 PM | Theres some great fights coming up this year for sure. I'm with on the Okami vs Silva thing though Id bet Silva with roll through him like everyone else. Ive got to disagree on the title shot for Machida vs Ortiz fight.. Thats just one last beating for Tito to whine about on his way out and Machida might have to fight another big name or two. I'm looking at Arlovski as the best contender for Nogueira after that convincing win over Jake Obrien. Though they may throw the winner of the Vera vs Werdum at Nog first. I think Arlovski has the best chance at beating him. Who knows after 07, the year of upsets in UFC. | |

Chuck will prolly get the winner of Rampage/Forrest for late summer/fall.
Penn vs Sherk is going to be insane.
|
| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/24/2008 7:24:13 PM | | Totally have to agree with you on that one.. Penn vs Sherk is going to be nuts... its a tough one to call. Im not sure who to put my money on with that one | |
|
| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/24/2008 9:49:46 PM | No doubt, Sherk/Penn is going to be insane. I read an interview that said BJ was going to "out-cardio" Sherk. Not sure that's possible, considering Penn's less than stellar conditioning record, but it's going to be interesting to see what he throws up off his back at Sherk.
And while I don't think that the Machida/Ortiz fight should be for a number one contender spot, if Tito wins, I'm thinking that the UFC realizes that it's a business, and they're in it for the money...he's still one of their biggest draws, and a match-up with either Rampage or the rematch with Forrest would be big money. Not so much with Machida, though. Good fighter, but kind of bland. Top that off with the lack of English skills, and I think UFC wants Tito to win this one and they can resign him and cash in on his mouth. Just one man's opinion though.

| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/24/2008 10:10:55 PM | I think Tito is out no matter what the result. The bad blood between him and UFC/Dana White has finally come to a boil. I don't know if you say the interview with Tito wheres hes going on, UFC didn't make me the star I' supposed to be and alot of other negative stuff. I really think the Dana White and UFC realizes that theres alot of other talent out there( like Machida, Evans, Jardine, Silva ,Hendo, shogun Rua, Griffen and of course Rampage) to name a few. Some big names to cash in on there so I doubt UFC is gonna bat an eye at losing the business Tito brings if they do at all. Don't get me wrong I was a huge fan of Tito in the early days but he turned into the diva of mma lately. As for Penn, he was looking in top condition last fight against Stevenson but keeping up with Sherk is tough no matter. Im wondering how Sherk will do since he hasn't fought in a while.. could there be some ring rust ? | |

| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/25/2008 4:21:46 AM | | I honestly am not looking forward to many fights unfortunately. I like Penn though. He's a good guy. But yeah. Fedor is who I want to see. But that'll never happen so not to big on UFC. As it talks a big game, but doenst bring the best in. | |

| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/26/2008 6:09:45 PM | | i have a question, why isnt jardine getting a title shot? honestly... i'm sure chuck will have one if he wins against rashad evans, so why isnt it jardine fighting evans, or getting a title shot. simple answer in my opinion... lidell brings in more money than jardine, which is why UFC is more about money than the quality of their fighters. | |

| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/26/2008 6:37:46 PM | My picks
-Georges St. Pierre -BJ Penn -Wanderlei Silva -Tito Ortiz -Chuck Liddell -"Rampage" Jackson
Tito is done after his final fight. He pretty much wants to murder Dana White. BJ Penn needs more attention, hes a good fighter. Some say Silva has hit his peak, but like Chuck Liddel he is just in a slump I think. I think Forrest Griffin is hilarious and has a TON of heart, a classic underdog but Jackson will beat him. Im looking forward to GSP winning the title again, Serra is gonna get a reality check and its gonna be oh so sweet.

| MMA in '08. Posted: 3/26/2008 9:35:51 PM | | I'd think Jardine would get a title shot ahead of Liddel if Rampage beats Griffen. Liddle vs Jackson has been done already and unless Liddel can come up with a different game plan Jackson has his number. If Griffen wins you never know. Title shot or not Liddel vs Evans is going to be a good fight. | |
