Costa Rica adventure

I am considering taking a adventure vacation in Costa Rica. White water rafting, and horse back through the mountains. If any time (or energy) left, I may do some diving.

Has anyone taken one of these adventures in Costa Rica. If so offer up some experiences, do's and don'ts would be appreciated. The one's that I find seem to last of 6 days. Most likely use another 6 sipping back penia' colata's.

Thanks in advance for all that reply.

Well now the rafting I have done and its a blast in costa rica for sure!
Never had the chance yet to do the horse back through the mountains but heard it is also very good . I will say pack some good bug spray . And make sure you have plastic for under your sleeping bags.
I am heading to san jose in either july or august this year and gonna be doing the atv through the jungle this time . And then heading over to the west side to the beaches over there and maybe try some surfing ! Make sure you wear long pants in the jungle as lots of small flying bugs that bite and blue jeans tend to be best to wear. A good pair of hiking boots is a must also even if your on a horse.
And have a blast and take lots of pics too.

I traveled to Costa Rica this past Feb with GAP Adventures, on an independent trip. It was a great experience. The Ticos/Ticas are so friendly. Why don't you check out some travel websites like tripadvisor, lonely planet, etc for hints...I found some really helpful advice without any problems at all.
Good Luck!

Costa Rica was an unbelievable adventure!! I went to Costa Rica last February and had an amazing time. We went to the Arenal Volcano which was incredible. We stayed at this little bed and breakfast that had the most beautiful views of the volcano. It is an active volcano so you can see the molten rocks falling and the lava flowing all the time. We also went zip lining through the rain forest which was such an adrenaline rush. And we repelled down waterfalls which was quite an adventure. We went on many nature hikes and saw so many exotic animals which was such a neat experience to see them in their natural enviroment. Then we went to Tamarindo Beach which was gorgeous. Apparently it was a surfers spot, but the waves were not that large. Aside from that, the water was beautiful and the sand was clean. There are many little shops and restaurants. Mostly all we did there was enjoy the beach and got a great sun tan.

But my experience with Costa Rica was a wonderful one. I sure would recommend if you are an adrenaline junkie to try zip lining and repelling. They both are adventures you will never forget. And I would absolutely travel to the Arenal Volcano. That was my favorite part of the trip. I could have watched the lava and rocks flow for ever.

I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip!!

I went to Costa Rica a few years ago and really enjoyed it, they have a day trip that includes zip lining and riding in the mountains and natural waterslide in the moutain and a wonderful spa mud bath at the botton of the mountain. Drving yourself can be dangerous. Food was very good. I would go back

I've been reading through these posts & I'm getting very excited. I leave for Liberia, Costa Rica in 2 days (4/17). My friend's parents have a home there- so I am blessed to have a free place to stay (with their own security guard luckily!). Anyway, it'll be 3 other girls & me. We plan to do the canopy tours, for sure (on the zip lines). We are really just playing it by ear---we're just going to enjoy the weather, the people, & the environment! I'll let you know how it goes!

Just flew back into Tampa - had a fabulous time in Costa Rica! We flew in/out of Liberia, CR - but stayed over in Ocotal. Just gorgeous! Of course, we enjoyed the pool, the sun, the shopping, the restaurants---but we also did the canopy tour (zip lines thru the trees) & deep sea fishing!

Let me know if you have any questions!

OP - I loved Costa Rica. The white water rafting down there is a great way to get introduced to rafting. Horseback riding on the beach is awesome!!

You can email me and I'd be happy to direct you to my travel blog. There you will see my written journals as well as pics of Costa Rica.

I just got back from 2 weeks in Costa Rica and I have already booked my trip for next year. I was staying in Playa Conchal at the Paradisus and some fo the trip were very long trips away from the hotel. 3 hours each way. Thats too long to sit on bus for me. I did do the zip lining and horses on the beach as well as deep sea fishing. I rebooked it at the same resort for next Feb for a week, But I am arrivinf 3 days early to goto the Volcano and Nat Forests that are far from the resort. Ill stay in that area and do all that stuff. I have a timeshare at the Melia Paradisus and it makes no sense to pay for the all inclusive and not be there. lol As Far as White Water rafting, I know the dry season starts in Dec. Is there enough water to whitewater raft in the dry months?

Went a couple years ago 2x. Stayed at the Capitol "San Jose".
I defintaly recommend the the CANOPY ride steel cable ride through the tree tops and the ATV rides up the mountains...
As far as food goes - we found the best restaurants when we asked the taxi driver to take us to some "Local" off the beaten path cafes.
However we did go through some rough neighborhoods...

I went to Costa Rica two years ago with Overseas Adventure Travel f(OAT)or 13 days. It was a great trip! We did go horseback riding through some banana fields, rafting (not the really rough stuff tho) swam in the hot springs and did the zip lines in the Cloud Forrest. It is a beautiful country. The volcanoes, birds and white and black sand beaches were beautiful also. OAT caters to a little older crowd that like to have fun and are active. Google it and check out their Costa Rica trips just to get an idea of where to go and what to do. We had a guide and traveled in a 16 passenger van. I think we got to see a lot more because of the guide and knowing where to go in a short period of time. Costa Rica is only the size of WVA, so you can get to a lot of different places, but the roads are pretty rough.

Well now counting the weeks off as in 6 weeks time I will be where the weather is sunny the scenery is fantastic and theres honestly friendly single women around .
And best of all most single women in costa rica love chatting to single canadian men at any age. Too bad canadian women are not the same way.
Maybe that explains why I am still single also!

Hola amigos,
I spend 2 months a year in Costa Rica, jan and feb when its cold here and nice there and enjoy every second of it. I live near the capital city of San jose. There is so much to do there. Do not miss visiting Arenal volcano. They have a day trip of about $100 or so that takes you to a super nice water resort with a bunch of pools all heated at different temps by the volcano. Petty crime is bad in San Jose but not so bad once out of the city, but always be careful. The good part is that they will only mug you and not kill you if you happen to be the unlucky tourist. A safe bet in San Jose while walking is to stay in the area of Avenida Central of which has been bricked over for pedestrians and you can walk for a long ways in several directions by just staying on the bricked over part. Lots of cops in the bricked over part. Costa Rica is the most tourist freindy of all the spanish countries perhaps exept Spain and the people are freindly. All the kids are taught english but they dont all take to it. Basically all the professional people speak english. And single guys,,,, the senoritas just love us!! I will be happy to answer any questions about my adopted country if you have any. Saludos(good health and how they close) King fish

Well now I have done all the touristy things like the Arenal volcano & spa and it is $100 including a nice dinner.(but it is a 4hr bus ride to this and back) Which sucks as 8 hrs on a bus sucks!
And if you are into ziplining through the jungle theres afew of these to try. I tried one which is like a beginners zipline and its cool .
But if your like me thats not enough I will be trying some more ziplines out this august and also I am gonna do the ATV tour up the mountain also.
And pacific beaches are a must for me this time.
Woo just looked and 5 more weeks to go and I will be in paradise land again !
Any one needing some info can email me & I can tell you some helpful things.
As for crime & ones safety in san jose if your out at night stay away from gringo gulch if your out alone. As many of the thieves are out looking for easy drunks to knock off . And never go home to a girls place at night from any of the bars. Always take her to your place . Only use bank machines at the banks /centro markets or ATM stations in gringo gulch/or casino's. But it costs $5 for each transaction okay no matter which atm machine you use.
A good place to enjoy dinner and a few drinks is a small place called
The Gardens Lounge & resturant on avennia 9,street 9 .And I have pics if your interested in seeing them. And tell tomas the owner that Ted from canada told you about his place and I am coming back soon!

Hey I enjoyed it in April. Note that there are two seasons, wet and dry. You don't want to be there when all it's doing is raining constantly. Eco tours are the way to go if you have the energy for that kind of a work out. The van rides are over wash-board roads. I gave birth after one trip!!!

Hey now who says it rains every day all day long in costa rica???
I have been there in the rainy or green season and it does not rain all day long.
Sure it does some times rain but not all day long.
Most times in the green season it will start to cloud up around 2:30 -3pm and it may rain till about 5-5:30 pm and then it clears up .
As for tours theres many types and wait till you are there and then check out the different tours being offered. You will save big time if you wait & choose any tour once your there.
You'll find the expensive tours are all american owned and the cheaper ones are costa rican owned. And if you do a currency covert you'll see why amercan owned tours charge more and costa rican owned tours charge less.
And talk to people who live there and they will point you to good deals and good savings also.
As for the roads out of town sure their not as smoothe as highways in north amercia or canada. But then they are just as smoothe as any high way that is on any mountian.
Most highways over the mountains are not very wide and speeds are around 40 -60 klms per hour . So thats why it takes longer to go from one city to another in costa rica.
I am counting the days now as soon I'll be heading back to costa rica !WOO HOOO!

As far as the rainy season goes its not so bad. And to be politically correct it is now called the green season. Usually the mornings are nice and it rains about 2-3 hours in the afternoon and then it clears off. And it does not rain every day but when it does rain in the afternoon it often pours big time. I dont think anybody should not go just because of the season but I will grant that jan-april is better, but it can rain in the dry season as well. Just go,,, and you will love it there. KF
