| Basic Balsamic Vinaigrette Salad Dressing Posted: 3/30/2008 2:40:17 AM | I need a recipe for a good Balsamic Vinaigrette salad dressing. I have looked on several websites and I can’t find what I am seeking. I am looking for something specific that someone made but they will not share the recipe (that will teach me to peek over someone’s shoulder when they are cooking.) I am sure that someone else out there knows how to make it. Some of the ingredients were Balsamic Vinegar, Olive oil, Garlic, Dijon mustard, and salt, that may have been all of them, nothing fancy. I am not a bad cook and I probably could figure it out but that takes time and hit or miss on the outcome, I would appreciate any suggestions from you. | |

| Basic Balsamic Vinaigrette Salad Dressing Posted: 3/30/2008 5:30:07 AM | Balsamic vinegar is stronger than others so need higher ratio of oil to vinegar than usual. Proportions are as follows.
1 tbs of vinegar 4 tbs of olive oil pinch of salt half a dozen twists of black pepper from a grinder 1/2 tsp of Dijon mustard (doesn't matter whether with or without seeds - just makes a different vinaigrette both really nice)
Mix well with a fork immediately before serving. | |

Equal parts balsamic vinagar & sunflower oil Crushed garlic (1 clove per person) pinch of sugar dash of salt & pepper
Whip together in a glass & pour over red lettuce, sliced red pepper & red onion. yum.  | |

| Basic Balsamic Vinaigrette Salad Dressing Posted: 4/2/2008 2:07:35 AM | It really depends what I'm dressing, but the most common thing I use just for a green salad is nothing but caramelised balsamic.
I get a bottle of balsamic, cook it down with a 2 teaspoonsish of brown sugar until it reduces to about 1/4 in size and wow. You only need a little bit to give the salad an awesome flavour. | |

| Basic Balsamic Vinaigrette Salad Dressing Posted: 4/2/2008 5:59:49 AM | | The standard measurement is 3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar. Garlic is crushed ,rubbed inside the bowl and removed. Fresh pepper, salt, chili flakes,thyme, oregano, basil and mint are muddled to bring out their essential oils. Add the vinegar then slowly drop by drop add the oil whisking all the time, if properly done an emulsion will occur. | |

Thanks, I am familiar with balsamic vinegar and you can find very nice ones in the hundred dollars and up range, those are reserved for a nice piece of Parmesan cheese and a drop of balsamic . I would recommend that anyone try some of these suggestions though, I may be living on salad the rest of my life  | |

It is the use of oak barrels that makes balsamic vinegar and should be able to get a perfectly acceptable bottle for a fraction of this. In the UK can buy half a litre for 6-7 dollars. This is everyday stuff in Italy. | |

I get one of the cheapest balsamics from the supermarket and after it's caramalised it tastes incredible. $5 and it lasts me around 3-6 months.
As long as you don't get it from a really cheap brand then there is little point. | |

Variety is the spice of life and I like a lot of different taste to mix it up so here are a few variations. vinegar, fresh ground pepper, (I skip salt) good quality olive oil, dijon mustard. Now for a change try: balsamic vinegar malt vinegar aged white wine vinegar aged red wine vinegar champagne wine vinegar and my favorite raspberry wine vinegar You can also add garlic and different mustards, such as nances, ect.  | |

I wouldn't pay $100.00 for vinegar, at some point there is an over kill factor, but some "basalmic" vinegars are simply vinegar with sweetner added. You want to be sure you get the real thing....natuarally aged in oak. It does taste better to have real ingredients. Margarine does not taste like butter. Cool whip does not taste like real, home made whipped cream. Quality ingredients matter. | |
