My friend never used the book, but went to one of the clinics, it cost about £210.00 but it worked for her.

I couldnt afford that so i did the patches and that worked for me.

Good luck !!

Yeah there brilliant are them patches, I put 2 over my eyes, I couldn't find my fags..

The best way to stop smoking IMO is willpower, spend as much as you can afford, or get for free on the NHS, but without the willpower, then you've wasted your money.

I read the book and its a decent read, considering you want to stop smoking anyway and your thankful of any advice.

As Tinny said you ain't going to stop without willpower or the desire to become a non-smoker.

My uncles stopped 15 years ago after smoking for 20 years, there wasn't any patches, NHS smoking clinics or books to help you stop smoking back then.
He stopped because he wanted to !!!!!

Good luck in beating the addiction.

I got the book and read it and decided it was trying to do exactly as it said the tobacco companies did but the opposite - it was brainwashing me not to smoke. I didn't give up with it because I didn't want to give up. (Sorry, I mean stop)

I gave up a while after then on willpower alone because I wanted to stop. I think that's the only effective way to stop.

I have known people who have given up using that book though, my sister and brother in law both did and haven't smoked in years, 2 of my friend did for ages but they both smoke again now.

Oh also my ex gave up through hypnosis, it was the 2nd hypnotist he had been to see becasue the first one didn't work and he had also tried patches and substitutes and all sorts before then, he also smokes again now though.

Regardless of all the replacement alternatives and books etc , the underlying factor here is willpower and believe me I speak from experience . Over the years I've had numerous attempts at quitting smoking using patches , gum etc but my lack of willpower defeated me so my only determination now is to not quit. I wish you luck

Why dont you go to the GP and tell him you want to give up smoking and ask him about CHAMPIX.
CHAMPIX is the new no smoking drug and believe me it works. After 4 unsuccessful attempts at giving up smoking Champix was the best and I still dont smoke. You have to of course be prepared and really want to give up and be prepared to TRY. Basically Champix fools the brain into thinking it has nicotime passing through it. The basic action of nicotine is on account of its ability to boost the production of dopamine in the body. Champix acts in a similar manner by increasing the amount of dopamine produced by the body. This helps lower the craving for smoking. It stopped me smoking and Im 25 wks stopped. Go to the GP and remember NEVER GIVE UP GIVING UP!!
I'll be your buddy if you really want to give up!

It's been exactly a year since I touched a cigarette - & I read Alan Carr's book

I smoked twenty a day for 24 years - & had tried everything ... & I do mean everything, acupuncture, patches, Zyban, hypnotherapy, nicorette chewy ... etc etc...

My best mate is the same, three years since reading Carr's book & never touched one.

=

I must add - I would never recommend Champix. Read up on violence & suicidal side effects.

I've stopped smoking quite a few times now, every time was, unfortunately, ultimately unsuccessful.. hang on while I light a faaaaag.

The last time I stopped was on July 1st, did really well until I got a bit too pished at a POF meet and then started back down the slippery slope. First it was just one when I'd had a drink. Then quite a few when I'd had a drink, then when I felt a bit stressed and now I'm back to being a smoker.
I'll be back at fresh start after my exams, when I'll be back on the patches.
I had the most success with Allen Carr, stayed stopped for four years (although, stopping because I found out I was pregnant probably helped a bit too). Didn't work at all the second time.
Tried hypnotherapy, lasted about an hour without a fag.

I'm bloody sick of smoking and do want to stop but haven't yet got alternative stratagies to deal with stress and lack of willpower caused by alcohol.
Good luck to anyone trying to make the break.

With all of the pressure to give up smoking these days I think you are a stronger person if you actually manage to carry one with the fags.

It's worth it just to irritate all of those preachy non smokers.

The book worked for me, it is repetitive and boring but that's the point of it, it seems to work in a subliminal way and gets right into your head.

does this mean that we get the sexy smoking pics back now tho...?

nice to see some positive response to the book. it arrived yesterday, but so far i haven't started reading it.

With Lily on this one, I would never take any kind of tablets to help me stop smoking..I was given Zyban a few years ago and ended up having a seizure and 4 days in hospital, luckier than the few that died..

I gave up for 4 months last year and then started again at the POF meet in Blackpool, although I have decided to give it another go and pick up my patches today, stop day Saturday.

eh? what? is this still on the market....?

thanks for all the encouragement, gonna stay away from pills and pof meets. it seems pof meets are not good for non-smokers. wonder what goes on there...?

My dad who is eighty now and hasn't smoked for thirty four years called in for lunch the other day and afterwards he said that he really had the urge for a cigarette. he resisted becuase he realises the issues of smoking and suffers from COPD ( breathing difficulties brought about by being a heavy smoker years earlier)
he tells me he felt stupid with getting this urge and he was really tempted. and yes he hasn't smoked at all for 34 years. so hypnotism/drugs and the public smoking ban all help but the bottom line is that after the the first month or so of getting weaned off the chemical dependancy its all about the will power of the individual.

Best of luck to all of you who are trying to give up and those who dont want to or simply can't , I hope you change your minds. But if not, no problem its your personal choice so best of luck anyway.

i'm on champix tablets, but they really make me feel sick!!! obviously that's a common side effect.

i read the allan carr book, was bored, but read it all and lasted all of about an hour without a fag. i know it's mainly down to willpower, but using something else too, like patches or the tablets does help and you actually believe they work, so it's easier to quit.
i gave up for 10 weeks this year, was doing great til i got stressed and had ONE fag, thinking it wouldn't lead to anymore, but it did.
i now plan on giving up again monday..

Lily.........i'm not suicidal YET lol...i know there are lots of side effects, but there are with everything, even anti depressants have side effects of feeling suicidal!
but cos everyone's different, i thought i'd give them a go and apart from feeling sick, i've no other side effects.

and yes of course Zyban is still on the market, not everyone has the side effects of them.

Of course there are risks but when you know the risks and keep getting your GP to monitor you then your chances of giving up successfully without committing suicide or being violent are reduced. Smoking is slow suicide isnt it? Also what about the violence you commit to people near you when you smoke.....passive smoking kills too!!
All Im saying is that discuss it with your GP, keep an open mind and try it...it does work!

I gave up using alcohol!

After 25 years of smoking 20 a day, I knew I hated the smell, so decided to do something about it. Decided on the Thursday to give up on the following Monday. Gave my last packet of cigs to someone, started my new job (where I didn't know anyone I could scrounge a cig from even if I got desperate.) The cunning bit was to get home and have a couple of very large vodkas....
At that point, with no shop within walking distance, and me somewhat over the limit, I could not give in and go and buy any. Easy.
It took about 3 weeks to clear the physical addiction...and during that time I did not attempt to get rid of the foul smell of stale cigarettes from my home or car. It just reinforced why I was giving up.
This was last October, and while the fresh smell of a cigarette as I walk past a pub might tempt me, the sight of desperate people in the rain just makes me laugh. Standing near someone who smells of stale cigs makes me realise why I gave up.

It is not difficult, just make the decision and stick to it.

Its not easy to stop smoking, its staying stopped thats hard.

I stopped for four years once and stupidly started again (with stress) have tried to stop twice since then and seem to last for a few months but the urges never leave.

I am planning on trying again and was going to try the drugs but errrm after reading up on them, think it will be the patches.I did attend the smoking sensations clinic which I did find helpfull....everyone in the same boat etc but as soon as my 12 weeks was up I gave into temptation, can't blame the vodka just lack of willpower and sense!
